Nimisila Kayak Fishing - Found BIG BASS in Grass and Lily Pads with Flukes and Chatterbaits

- Nimisila Reservoir in Northeastern Ohio is becoming one of my favorite places to fish for big bass and is a great place to practice my grass fishing techniques since the lake has large grass flats and a lot of lily pads. Having fished there a handful of times now, this is one of the few lakes where I have a little "history" to fish... I am very fond of a big off-shore grass flat that can hold bass... but I have never had the time to explore the rest of the lake so that was the goal of this pre-fishing weekend, learn more of the lake and find more fishy spots! My buddy, Kevin, met me up at the Nimisila State Park Campgrounds and we fished for a few hours Friday afternoon with some awesome BIG bass (I got a 20+incher!) when they started hitting the fluke in the grass and then on the water all day Saturday. The only negative of the weekend was that my fish finder didn't work when I got there (I have been having power and wiring issues all year), so instead of the off-shore electronics mapping I had planned on, on Saturday I pedaled my Hobie Lynx around the perimeter of the lake checking for juicy looking spots for my next tournament. But pre-fishing or just having some time to learn a lake is a rare and special thing for me so it was a little heartbreaking to not have electronics for the weekend, but any experience on a lake is better than nothing!
Many of the lakes we fish on my local trails I have never been to before since I didn't grow up fishing and when I finally got into it I was in California, so when I started following my local Kayak Bass Fishing trails around Ohio a few years ago I had basically zero experience on any of these lakes (and let me tell you how scary it is to launch pre-dawn at a ramp you've never been to onto a dark lake you've never seen before!). I panic a little that I will never catch up to the experience of my competitors so I am always looking for things I can do to make up for that... I listen to BassU seminars in the car on the way to work, I have books on bass behavior waiting for me to have a day off to read, and on the rare occasion I have a weekend off work and no tournament planned I spend it on a lake I know our trails will be back to like Nimisila. But like most people I work full time and have zero free time outside of the weekends to fish, and I have been scheduling a tournament almost every weekend to try and get as much experience in as I can as quickly as I can. I dream of fishing national-level tournaments (and my completely unrealistic fantasy is getting a little camper van and a trailer and hitting the road to fish full time) but I don't see how that will ever be possible since I can't afford the time off work to pre-fish the lakes and I am not sure I can justify the cost of the entry fees and travel expenses for bigger tournaments when I will have no experience on that water and no time to practice and I would be competing against people who have so many saved waypoints and so much history. Well, all that and I can't seem to catch tournament fish even locally yet. 🤣
So it is almost time to start planning my 2024 schedule. Should I fish fewer tournaments which would allow more free weekends like this one for practice and pre-fishing? Or do I keep going with my theory that tournaments give double the value in lessons and experience since they are helping me learn both competitive fishing and the actual basics of just catching fish? This all would be so much easier if I had discovered fishing before my 30s, but I'm doing my best to make up that lack of experience, and if hard work pays off in fishing my results should start picking up soon and then we'll see what happens!
Thanks to Strictly Sail & Kayak for my amazing Hobie Lynx! I can't say enough good things about my Lynx... light enough for me to easily car-top after a long tournament day, fast, agile, stable, comfortable, and it makes me feel safe and brave even out on unfamiliar waters!

Looked like a couple of great days on the water. Nice weather, nice fish, and nice special effects with the 360. 👍
Thanks! Yeah too bad it wasn't a tournament, right? But it was a great weekend and I learned a lot!
Great job out there! You were on ‘‘em and caught some beauties while fishing very skillfully. Getting warmed up for next years tournament competitions!😀
Thank you! :)
Great photography and excellent fishing
Thank you so much!
Awesome job girl!! 👏
Thanks, Laryn!
@GirlGoneFishing we still need to get together! We've had the flu in the house the last 2 weeks. Hopefully we'll be able to hang out before it get too cold! 💜
Oh no, I hope you guys are feeling better now! We had someone quit at work so I am covering and working 6 days a week for at least 4 weeks, which has put a big crimp in my fall fun fishing plans!
@GirlGoneFishing oh jeez girl. That's crazy! Totally feel ya though!
You got this!! 😉
Nice show! Good ta see ya out doing some relaxing! 🤠
I'm still torn on if I fished better because I wasn't trying so hard or if the bite just happened to be on.
@@GirlGoneFishing I did notice you don't lose as many when you're more relaxed about getting them in! Myself I do way better when I don't get so intense about it all . I feel I fish better when I just take the day as it comes.
I was watching Al Linder talk about fishing a while back. They kept records how they did fishing for about 25 years and found out that in a weeks time they would have two great days,3 average days, and 2 bad days! No matter the what they were fishing for it still held true ! So don't be to hard on yourself when it's tough 🤠
O Ya! Awesome Bass ! Great show!
in 2 years Melissa is gonna be a force to be reckoned with on the tourney trail!!
Gosh, I really hope so! I'm not sure I can make it happen but I am giving it my all!
Great video! I live in Northeast Ohio. I'll definitely be giving Nimisila a try!
I really want to spend a bunch of time up there so I can explore all of the Portage Lakes! I've only been on Nimisila so far, but it is hard to drive past Nimi to go to another lake when I know the potential of Nimisila!
Have been enjoy your video. Love fish for bass as well. Being living in Myrtle Beach I go to the inlet fishing lot of fun. Thanks for your videos brut
Thank you! You should film some of your trips out, it would be interesting to see what "inlet fishing" is like!
So awesome to see you with awesome fish catches Melissa!🎣🎣🎣
Yeah it was weird how I caught fewer fish this year than last year, but I feel like I made leaps and bounds in learning and understanding. Maybe I have to go backwards to go forwards? This was sure a really fun weekend, though!
What a fun couple days! Looks like your bonus fishing might’ve been check worthy! Beautiful place up there though-took friends on their first kayak fishing trip there a few weeks ago!
That fish would definitely be in the running for a big bass check, although I know there are bigger in there! I've never caught a fish like that in an in-person tournament... yet!
I just bought a Hobie 360 from Strictly Sail and Kayaks….they were awesome! Good video.
They are the best and I love supporting a small, family-owned business that supports us!
What a fun couple of days...catchin' fish! LOVED the photography of the fisheye effect (is that what you call it?) 👏😍
Thank you and yeah I think that curved view is fisheye, the MAX 360 does have some great shots!
You should show some of your fluke tips. How you rig rods and such
It is just an unweighted texas rig, I use either a Gamakatsu EWG 3/0 or 4/0 offset shank worm hook or a 3/0 Mustad KVD Grip-Pin hook, tied with a palomar knot to 10-12 pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon, and I throw it on a spinning rod because I am just not good enough to do unweighted on a baitcaster yet. I have no idea if this is right stuff to use with a fluke since I just started to throw one this year, but so far it has all worked really well... lots of bites in grass, pads, around wood, and even in open water, and a good hook-up ratio.
Awesome fish, that's a good northern bass for sure! Check your wiring & connections & your fuses. Let's assume your electronics are ok, & your battery is charged, it could only be fuse or wiring/connections. I run 8 gauge marine grade wire from my battery box in back of my kayak up to my front hatch of my PA12. That wire connects directly to a dual bus bar I use for power distribution. I have same voltage at my unit as directly from my battery which is 16.8v
Thanks! Yeah the current theory is I am too rough on the wiring when the Garmin is in my trunk, so I am going to attempt to rewire the whole thing before next season.
Awesome video, heard good things about Nimisila. Darin from Wendell Fishing channel had a Meet/greet/fish up there back in May and I couldn't go.
Question: Is the Hobie Lynx is safe to transport on J bars due to hull design? I'm still a year out from owning one. I was going to head down to Strickly
Thanks! I don't think you should transport the Lynx on J-Bars, but I don't have anything to base that on factually other than Brian at Strictly had me take off my kayak cradle and tie it down flat to the crossbars with just pads on the bars.
What was that date you were fishing. Just asking. I thought it was cold and raining today ty.still nice video
This was early last month, I had to pause to get the TOC video out for Cincinnati Kayak Fishing. Getting caught up now!
There's definitely something those big bass like around there. It's not that big of an area for that many big bass & it's an area that most people wouldn't even consider to fish, not much cover or any contours.
It is the grasslines mostly.
What’s messed up is the DNR didn’t put up those buoys. A bird group did. Doesn’t make any sense why they have that authority.
They must have had permission from ODNR to put them there. I have never been up there when the Purple Martins are on those islands, but I hear the sky is just black with them swirling. Must be so cool!
Is it possible to swim Lynx in icy water or will the shell crack? I just bought a new Lynx very cheaply, I would like to try it out, but it's snowing outside and I don't know if it's a good idea.
I have used my Lynx in 40 degree water but nothing lower (I don't have a dry suit so just not safe to go out in the cold water). I would ask on the Lynx Owner's page on facebook, they are a great resource for Lynx experienced people.
Don't take this as a criticism but I'm unclear why you were unwilling to retrieve the hunters duck for him? My only guess is that you're a vegan (?)
Hahaha does one have to hate cheeseburgers to not want a bleeding wild bird on your boat? I actually hesitated to leave that part in the video because hunting is a polarizing topic, but I like to show the real me so I left it. I didn't grow up fishing and I didn't know anyone who hunted until I started meeting anglers in my mid-30s, at which point I met my first bow hunter who explained that to him it was better than grocery store meat, which I respected. I have never hunted or intentionally killed anything (my fishing is all catch and release), never touched a gun in my life, but I do eat meat, have plenty of friends who hunt and fish for food, and I try to live my life open minded and non-judgmental about differing viewpoints and philosophies. However, it is also my right to not want to touch the freshly killed bird, I have no idea what diseases wild birds carry, how to get it to the shore without getting blood on my boat, and generally ick. When he asked for help I was so torn, I didn't want to be a jerk and not help, I didn't want that dead bird to go to waste if he couldn't get to it (I really don't know anything about it, but isn't it responsible hunting to be prepared to retrieve what you killed?), so when I realized my buddy was behind me and he is a hunter, I was so relieved that everyone could get what they wanted and I could be out of that situation. Maybe some day I'll meet someone I trust to teach me to shoot, and while I can't see that I will ever want to shoot anything other than a paper target I don't judge those who do!
@@GirlGoneFishing Hi, yeah, nah! Cheeseburgers are delicious! I hope you saw (or see) my question as simply addressing the 500 lb gorilla sitting in the living room and not with mean-spirited intent. I grew up on a farm where, while we seldom actually butchered animals ourselves, we knew where they were eventually headed. And since I too like to fish, I was just a little confused as to your response with the hunter. Your desire to keep your boat clean is certainly sufficient AND since your friend was able to help him out, I doubt anyone saw you as mean or selfish. Just, perhaps, a little confused. Or maybe that was just me. Anyway, you are right in that nobody can ethically hunt without a means for retrieving dead game. Maybe his retriever was off chasing mail men? Doubt it but maybe.
Love your channel because you ARE authentic and don't try to edit out mistakes (birds nests, dead batteries, missed fish, skunkings, etc) and because you are learning. There are plenty of you tubers who act like they know everything. I hope your electronic issues are resolved.
Thank you! And I'm always happy to explain what I was thinking, I can't promise it will always make sense! 🤣
