  • I can't stop collecting low pass gates. There's GAS, and then there's LPG GAS. Don't know what the deal is there. (Here's a playlist with all my vids on them: • Eurorack low pass gate )
    Here's the latest batch. Most of them are small and passive, but some are bigger and powered and covered in knobs and sliders and stuff. So it's really a sound comparison, not a full module comparison.
    Sound source: Befaco Pony square wave. Sequencer: Stochastic IG.
    No envelopes, just gates out of the SIG.

    Always a pleasure to see your comparisons, would love to see more of a deep dive on some of these! Love the Omen (of course), but I was also very pleasantly surprised by the Buchla clone! Will have to pick that one up.

      The M13 is a very limited run, so you'll want to grab it soon if you want to get one. Analogue Haven has them.

      The appeal for me with the Natural gate is the lack of bleed, and the ability to modify the attack with the three position switch (making the unit much more versatile), and the modeling of the louder/brighter triggers in succession is something other “vactrol-less” LPGs don’t have. I do wish it had resonance control, though.

      @PeterGrenader Год назад

      @@geerhoar You should be able to add some sort of resonance to any filter that isn't equipped with it by inverting the output, (you may have to amplify it slightly if you want it to self oscillate) and running it back into it's input, mixed with the original input signal of course. The level of that feedback will determine the amount of resonance. With a LPG you'll have to be in Low Pass mode and remember - the feedback has to be 180 degrees out of phase. You'll pick off the first few harmonics. Give it a try.
      i am not going into a sales pitch here, but I do want to mention that the trim pot that John is tweeking on the M13 cuts the bleed associated with vactrol-based LPGs. That's the actual reason I added that portion to the original 292 circuit. This is one thing that drove me bats and i spend a good part of a month working out circuitry to adjust it. Does it remove it? No, that's impossible as vacs don't shut down to zero ohms. But it cuts it to a quarter of what it is if the trimmer isn't added.... so .5mV instead of 2mV at Euro signal levels which in most circumstances is acceptable. A side effect of this adjustment also cuts down the ringing, which was a life saver for me being able to release it. because vacs are so scarce now, we bought a large quantity from another manufacturer who binned them as too ringy and were able to make them work!

    Good news! Your gears are saved, as there's a "regular" power implemented in the newest batches of Natural Gate!
    Thanks for the comparison video - it's pure gold, as always!

    I genuinely don't understand how natural gate's sound is good enough that it justifies the crazy prices it goes for on reverb, I've listened to it a bunch trying to figure out exactly what makes it unique, haven't completely gotten one. Not disparaging or dissuading anyone who wants to buy one or owns one, just trying to understand better lol.

      The used prices are silly. People are paying for instant gratification. The new price is reasonable for what you get, IMO. In addition to the Natural Gate, I have the EAR M13 mini (and used to have an old M13). I have a couple OG 292 models in my Buchla. I love LPGs, as well.

    The BeepBoops and M13 sound best to me. The NG sounds good, but I dislike their artificial scarcity model of releases, so I don’t even consider that unit. The SSG didn’t sound as good as I remember. Nice tunability though. I built one of the original MengQi DPLPGs, but it sounds like crap to my ear. I will stick with my LxDs I guess :-)

      What do you mean artificial scarcity?

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas Месяц назад

      @@cougarman8They are made seldom, and in very low quantities, so new ones sell out immediately, and used ones are always priced very high.
      It's fine if the makers want (or have) to do it that way, and the Natural Gate is a fine product, but I am not interested in playing in that game as a consumer.
      It was the same (or similar) with the Whimsical Raps stuff, IMO.

    • @cougarman8
      @cougarman8 Месяц назад

      @@mike.thomas but if they have to do it, how is that artificial? Maybe they can only make so many at a time. I think they’re a one person operation? And the parts might be hard to get?

    It is a pleasure watching your excellent videos John!
    How would the Tokyo Gate stand next to the non-resonant channel of the LxD or the M13 mini?
    Which one do you prefer and rank them to your personal taste?

    • @JohnSchussler
      @JohnSchussler  6 месяцев назад

      Well, those are three very good ones, so none is "best." Personally I probably like the Tokyo Gate or the M13 better than the LxD, but remember that's specific to the vactrols on mine. YMMV....

    That Natural Gate power cable is SUPER annoying.

      My NGs are over two years old and both have normal euro power. Pretty sure it was only an issue for much earlier batches.
