I recently finished my MSF course and have been riding for about a month now, picked up a rebel 500 and honestly can't be happier personally. Very approachable and very capable for my daily commute and typical riding environment. As far as interstate riding goes, I've heard it's perfectly fine on this motorcycle for reasonable distances. So excited to be riding and I can't wait for the journey to come!
I am 6 foot 5. An upright bike feels best to me. For whatever reason with my feet below me versus out in front like a cruiser seemed to work for me. I ended up with a Kawasaki 650 Versys for a first bike. Love it. Just feels right all around. No complaints.

As a very experienced rider (40+ years on the street)..... Please don't under estimate the value of a "little" bit of boredom with your first bike. I love the list and agree with almost all.... but when the time comes that you begin to get bored, don't rush to get your next bike ! I truly believe that when you are completely comfortable, and the bike has no more surprises for you.... this is your best time to learn "Roadcraft"..... Because you don't anymore concerns with riding the bike, your able (almost forced due to boredom) to pay way more attention to your environment..... Identify actual road conditions ....ie... tar snakes potholes debris etc. and learn to identify what the four wheeled assassins are going to do sometimes before they even think of doing it.... but this is the time to let the force become strong...................PS: There is no "I had the right of way" when your broken or dead !!!!!!
Another PS : if anyone reads it.......First bike was a standard .... second was a litre bike (learn some tough lessons there) 13 bikes later (touring, cruisers, vintage, power cruisers, back to a litre bike) , currently 2022 H2 sx se (not one Harley, obviously I don't know what I'm missing ....... or maybe I do) Keep up the great work Yammie !!!!!!!
If you are not in the US perhaps the best bike you can get is a Fantic Caballero Rally. The Italian design, 48hp, arrow exhausts and the ability to go anywhere. It’s at home either at a cafe or at the mountain.
That's a lovely shot of conformation bias I just got there. Granted my DRZ is an old kick start only version, but they are great bikes, period. (my second bike is a KLR, which I stand by)
@@metaldreams3595 having riden with 390 Duke, 390RC, Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 would still say they are quite the same. Yeah RC has a bit different gearing compared to Duke. "This is my DRZ. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My DRZ is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my DRZ is useless."
Great list. Personally, as my first bike I'm going for the Honda CB500F, over the X, but I can see why you'd pick the X.
I got an MT-03 and love it!
If you are not in the US perhaps the best bike you can get is a Fantic Caballero Rally. The Italian design, 48hp, arrow exhausts and the ability to go anywhere. It’s at home either at a cafe or at the mountain.
Yammie -- Would you give an honorable mention to the KTM Duke 390 in third place as well alongside the RC390?
Lol Svartpilen 401 didn't make this cut. Insanity. From #1 to unmentioned
That's a lovely shot of conformation bias I just got there. Granted my DRZ is an old kick start only version, but they are great bikes, period. (my second bike is a KLR, which I stand by)
Benelli tnt 135 and honda grom best for small nimble motorcycles.
CF 450sr CP2 is also a great beginner motorcycle.
Mt07 should've definitely been on the list a bike you don't get bored on or outgrow so fast and still have options of things to do with it.
That’s what I’m looking at as my first bike
Mt07 has like 70 horsepower, everything on here is under 50
Where's the Svartpilen 401 Yammie?! WHERE IS IT?!! ... just bought one lol XD
Basically same as KTM 390RC, just missing the fairings and a bit different shape of fuel tank, but engine is same.
@@krisavi Very different from 390RC holy sht. Very different. Stop parrotting what you see others say
@@metaldreams3595 having riden with 390 Duke, 390RC, Vitpilen 401 and Svartpilen 401 would still say they are quite the same. Yeah RC has a bit different gearing compared to Duke. Makes a bit of difference in handling but not that much either. There isn't any more power coming from the same engine, just application of this power is a tad bit different. Both Husqvarnas are very similar to each other. Vitpilen has lower handlebars and due to it, also different riding positions.
Awe man, I'm kinda bummed my Super Duke 1290r EVO didn't make the list. I'll settle for my 300NK being on the list!
I’d like to see a ranked list for best beginner cruisers!
Agreed! We want cruisers!
Love my DRZ, i'll never get rid of it
Man i wish i never did 😭😭 finna buy another one next year after i get a gsxr 750
is the svartpilen still good in 2023? or should I reconsider? planning to buy in March
its rad, you wont be disappointed, its the RC 390 in a better looking skin.
What about the duke 390?
I 100% agree with this list
I think the cfmoto 450sr deserves to be on this list. Yes, the reliability is still there but that 270 crank is just.. anyway. The cb500x rank was very surprising.
Surprised Yam picked the RC390 over the Duke, and a 2023 list without the new RE Scram 410 seems like a miss.
Props for having the CB500X at number 2 but there are so many bikes you could have picked over the Iron 883, those are way too heavy for most people to start on.
I’m going to get the best bike of all, the DR-Z400.
finally subbed for the HEALTH shirt
I have a 2019 ninja400 and 2017 drz400sm learned everything from my main man yam if he started on a drz he might actually be able to pop dank nooners love you yam thanks for all the advice🤘
My first bike was the DR650. Fantastic first bike only disadvantage was I'm only 170cm so I couldn't tippy toe it it letbalone flat foot it, it was one foot only for me. Also BTW had Zero carby issues, zero.
Also where is the KTM Duke 390 and Husquvana Spartpilian 401 on this, seriously?
I mean you included both the Z400 and the Ninja 400 both the R3 and the MT03 so there's no excuse to say you already had the RC390 on the list also let's be honest as a beginner bike both the Spartpilian and the 390 Duke make far sense the the RC390 with much more beginner friendly ergonomics/ridding position.
KLR 650 does one thing exceptionally- not dying :)
you taking points for bikes being low kinda takes for granted that some people are short lol. I'm 5'2". I'm getting a grom because I'm a small person who doesn't want something that I wouldn't be able to pick up on my own if i drop it
I got a CB500F and it’s honestly everything I could wish for. It’s upright and comfortable, but leans nicely in the corners and has the kind of sporty look that I just think is the coolest. Costs a little less than the X version and honestly unless you plan do go off road or you really need that windshield for long distances I’d say it’s not worth the extra money
@YammieNoob.. no
I’m torn with the F and the X, off road would be cool, but not sure where I’d really do that around here anyways…
That CF Moto is looking very appealing to me purely based on the price + coming with ABS
Got Honda CB650R and love it, had CB500F ( my first ) 3 years and if i could afford i would have changed to 650 after 2 years instead of 3, but CB500F was really enjoyable
I’m 16 and live in the uk, first “bike” was a Lexmoto Diablo. Biggest mistake of my life…. Give it 6 months and I’ll be on a ktm exc or a husqvarna tc, can’t wait
We wanna see more POWWEEER! I learnt riding in a GSXS750. I’m looking something on that range.🔥
I mean if you’re looking for 4 cylinders in close to the same cc area, that’s really the only option in the US besides the Honda 650
Husqvarna Svartpilen 401??? Couple of your videos say this is an awesome beginner bike. Is that not the case anymore based on this video (objectively of course)?
Its the 390 in a better looking package, he should have had the 390/401 occupy the same spot, not even a mention for the black arrow is a criminal act.
I suppose it's because this is specifically for new 2023 models
Funny i just got a cb500x. Didnt do my research went full guns blazing swapped my ktm350 sxf for it. And honestly i have no regrets. Best bike ive honestly riden does everything ill need it to do and very reliable
Where is the 401
Yeah last video it was the num 1! So confused
The DRZ @ 1 is definitely a brilliant troll move
LOVE THE
rebel 500
CB500X
Okay how did a husqvarna svartpilen or vitpilen not make it into this list
That falls into the same category as a Duke or RC390 since they’re mechanically the same
Even as a newcomer, I feel everyone will get mad at this list.
CF moto will likely prove itself with time, they are actually the manufacturer for KTM and other brands we take pride in riding in the US, the bike also has a trellis frame which are known for being one of the most soundly designed types of frames from an engineering standpoint.
Could we get the same list but for “beginner” middleweight bikes for us older or semi experienced beginner riders that a looking for something with a bit more oomf maybe a bike that could be a forever bike.
Got a video like that next week!
As I really enjoy your channel and own a CB500X, I'm going to accept your rankings without criticism!
Hey buddy !!! You added the interceptor but you forgot the continental gt 650 , I finalised this particular motorcycle to buy in 2023 around in the month of October .
Hey u should put no 3 ktmrc390as sports Duke casual adventure 380 as adv or Neo retro svartpilon nd vitpilan
CB 500 X is a good first choice but you could also look at the Kawasaki Versys X 300.
I'd add the RE Scram 411 to this list.
