People in 2016, “the MacBook only has 2 USB ports”
Me in 2021, “Lucky”
Lol

@@clipped9848 the m1 macs only have USB type C
Lmao. I don't get why we don't have at least one USB port... it is ridiculous to need an extension just to plug in usb lmao. Older computers were better in this regard.

100000 THUMBS UP!
I never saw a video so well explained in the right speed (not too slow, not too fast), and with all the info you need at once!
Congratulations for doing such a good job!
Thanks for such a thoughtful comment!
I think this is the most helpful video I've seen in a while! Very easy to follow, and SO helpful. Get a like :-)
+Thijmen Bleijenburg Thanks a lot!
oh yeah oh yeah
welcome to the new Mac World lol
@@bodiejarvis Yeah I came because I have a new mac pro, and I'm really upset that I only have usb c
this is excellent. thank you. One question - If want to use a USB camera that attaches to the desktop monitor, how do i get that to work so that camera settings uses new camera as opposed to Macbook camera ?
Just plug it into a usb port on your mac or on the USB hub. And then select that camera on any video chat/calling program you use. Those webcams are plug n play, so they don’t need any additional setup
I couldn’t get it to this for over a week! Who knew I just needed to plug it in and close the lid!
One of the clearest, most direct "how to" videos I've ever seen! Thank you. No extra chatter. Just solved the problem in clear and concise way. Subscribed!
Thanks for the comment and for subscribing
This is really helpful but my huge concern is whether the thunderbolt and the HDMI cable will have an audio sound from the TV? I have an Macbook pro and a Imac.
Great, but how do you move from one to the other? I accidentally did it once, but can't figure out how I did it.
This video told me everything I needed to set up an external monitor and keyboard.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a USB-C HDMI cord - however I am having trouble getting the sound to play on my monitor instead of my Mac. I go in and switch the output to the monitor vs the Mac and nothing plays. Any tips for this?
You can use the mouse and the keyboard with one usb receiver just download the app
Instead of wireless keyboard and mouse, can you use wireless apple magic keyboard and mouse and still be able to close the macbook and use as a desktop? Like if I use wireless apple magic keyboard and mouse and I close the macbook, will the keyboard and mouse shut off or turn off?
one of the most helpful videos i've seen in a long while. straight to the point. good job
Very clear and simple to understand, great video. Just one tip, for the wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech connection utility lets you combine mouse and keyboard to the same receiver, so you need only one connected to the laptop.
Thanks! You’re right about logitech unify software. However, both the mouse and keyboard need to be unify compatible in order for it to work
I plugged my monitor in and the desktop image isn't coming up, it's just blue. Do I NEED the logitech keyboard and mouse in order to see my desktop and to navigate on the monitor?
helpful video thanks, how about hooking it up as a second monitor? not just a replication of the laptop monitor
Yes, you can do that as well
Incase the monitor you connected to isn't showing all items as it ought to ... click on the help button to the top left of your screen and then type display, open the display arrangement setting and click mirror display. This helps if your MacBook screen is broken.
does the Philips monitor need to have a power chord for this MacBook process? It previously was able to draw power directly from a lenovo laptop
Hi My tv set has got only 2 ports its Samsung with HDMI & A VGA port. I am missing a USB Port and Audio Jack. How do i add these 2 to the LCD of the Samsung? Thanks
thanks for the instructions. I always forget that I have to have the power cable in the macbook in order to close it.

Is it bad to leave laptop plugged in the whole time?
IA MaTrIx no
Thank you so much, you really helped me to trouble shoot connecting my monitor!
You’re welcome
Great Tutorial. You sound like JusReign xD

💕 Thank you so much! I'm very near sighted and after a teacher asked me why I sat so close squinting at my laptop screen I knew I had to find a solution. Going slowly over connections for the mouse, keyboard, and audio as well as the different connectors I may encounter... this video was perfect. I also GREATLY appreciate that you planned ahead and edited shots. There is nothing worse than information interrupted by endless hems and haws. It was a joy listening to you deliver your message.😊
Great video....I have a question though where do I plug in the head set if it's already being utilized with the hdmi plug i need for speakers and audio ? is there something i need to buy aswell ?
What if the monitor is 21:9 ratio ?
Are you able to use the laptop and the monitor as 2 separate monitors?
+Old man jenkins Yes, you can
i cant see anything on my monitor except the wallpaper. how can i fix that?
Close the lid.
I'm having this exact same problem!
Close the monitor and keep it on charging.
One of the best "how to" videos I've ever seen!
Thanks, Terri!
Nice vid! I do have a question. When using the method with the the thunderbolt cable will it charge the MacBook? I have seen multiple videos and I'm guessing according to the monitor you can also use the monitor as a hub and it will charge the MacBook. Any input on that ?
How can I mirrow with wifi with my Mbpro to my TV I have and old MBPro 2012 it has on1 fire 2 usb , is the something I can buy I can use to project to my tv wifi? I am sorry if i make mistakes I am french! Thanks Peter
Do you have any recommendation monitor for macbook mid 2012? I need help honestly as soon as possible
I have a link to a monitor right below the video
You said you would add a link to everything you used but I only see a link for the HDMI please advice which VGA adapter to thunder port you used. Also my Macbook Pro is 2014 and did not come with a reciever to hook up the mouse and keyboard. Can I purchase this?
Lou, all the links to all the items I recommend are right below the video.
great video! very helpful - nice step by step directions. thanks!
Thanks for the comment
Very helpful and informative. Thank you for explaining and supplying links.
You’re welcome. Thanks for the comment
The one thing I hadn't done was plucking in the power cable to the laptop and voila!
Jan Toft Rasmussen who would have thought! Me too.
Jan Toft Rasmussen you connected the mac power cable to the monitor?
No! The Mac has to be connected to the power in order to brining some life into the screen 😂
Oh yeah thats right lol
Can I use the keyboard on macbook while it is connected?
Yes
Can you do this with a MacBook that doesn’t have hdmi
Milø use an adapter
Molnár Dorisz okay thanks
Hiya how are you i've ordered a vga cable to plug into my tv i was just wondering whether it works through facetime as well if you could get back to me that would be great cheers andy
Yes, it does work with Facetime, but you will need an external usb webcam like this one: amzn.to/2cyXlbk
Do you know if this will work on a Mac book Air as well? Again I would be using the HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor on my Mac book since it doesn't have an HDMI port on the PC side.
Yes, it should work fine
What if just use HDMI cable without VGA cable with Audio?
when I shut my macbook pro off then monitor same. So now how the monitor still on,can you instruct me???
Can you physically close your MacBook and still use the monitor as the primary screen?
Yes
ReviewLamp thanks man
Hello, if I’m using MacBook Pro 2017 with 2 USB C ports, will the monitor be able to display stuff from my MacBook if i use a USB C + HDMI cable ONLY? (with the USB C connected to my MacBook and the HDMI connected to the monitor) without any audio cable
Yes, that should work fine
Hi For some reason I connected with HDMI and thunderbolt but the monitor shows only the background of my MacBook but it doesn't function What is the problem?
how to do you prevent your macbook going to sleep when you close the lid and just want to use the monitor?
When you close the lid and the cable is connected to a monitor which is on, the Macbook goes into clamshell mode. The screen on the Mac turns off while the computer stays on and the external display continues to work.
Dude this video was so helpful!!
Thank you
You’re welcome
What i have to do when my macbook fullycharge? shall i unplug the charger while using the monitor? or....
+Genta Sankara No, as I explained in the video, you cannot unplug the charger when the MacBook is connected to the monitor.
Nice video! I'm sure it will be very helpful to most people
Thanks!
Hello, great video man!
But wont the MacBook Pro's battery fry if i have it connected to the charger at all times?
No. I have had mine connected to a power source most of the time, since I got my macbook pro 6 years ago, and I can still use it for at least 4 hours just running on a battery, haven't actually tried for any longer than that. It has not fried my battery life so far.
Can I still do this, when my mechanical keyboard is wired? because he used a wireless mouse and keyboard
Yes you can
@@Reviewlamp, thank you I'm sorry will this still work when I installed windows on my mac via bootcamp?
my macbook doesn't pop up that screen you have when you click "detect displays" i don't get it.. can you help me?
Great video! But can I use this with my Razer key board and mouse or no?
+Hyper Prestige Thanks! And yes you should be able to use that keyboard and mouse
Very simple explanation. Really informative 😍
Thanks
can we project with no wire ?
Can you just use the keyboard and track pad on the laptop or you have to use an wireless keyboard and mouse?
+Tou Yang You can use both
Thanks for the rapid reply. Your video is very informative. Keep up the awesome work.
Thank you! Please subscribe
why do you need a separate keyboard and mouse? thanks.
It makes it easier to use the setup in desktop mode
“Unfortunately the MacBook Pro only has two USB ports”
Every MacBook after this - Welp
@Ian - I only have 2 hubs as well you just need to connect a powered usb hub 1:49 ( I have a MacBook Air 2012) and it will work☺️
TheBobelly628 I understand that and cool that you can still use that old air. I was making the joke that all the newer MacBooks have no USB ports
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and it works fine wit an external monitor. I use one USB port for the keyboard and mouse (Logitech unified receiver) and i use the mini display cable from the MacBook to a mini display input on the monitor. I still have an open USB port on the laptop .
Very helpful for the 4k macbook screen where I need to use a magnifying glass to see my editing icons.
Well explained. Thank you
Thanks for the comment
but i have this issue after connecting ACER 24 inch full HD screen the fan of my macbookpro went crazy and it will nt stop until i disconnect the screen ???? why is it the screen or the cable ?
Try another cable
Thanks - was looking for this!

Can you please reply to me! I have a iMac mountain lion.... and a brand new iMac El Capitan. I wan't to sync up both of the computers together because one has a dvd slot and the other doesn't. Will this work using your video?
No, the system I showed you won't work to sync it. Are you trying to transfer files from one Mac to the other?
No, LOL! I just want to watch movies on my El Capitan using the dvd slot of my iMac mountain lion and sync them up! :D
As I saw from your video that when you controlled one system, it was controlling the other at the sam e time, I wanted to know If I could do that with my two iMacs! Thank you for replying back to me.
With the VGA can you get away with using the audio out of the Macbook Pro (My remote monitor does not have audio).
It should work fine
Thx this is just what i need
This is a good solution for getting the smaller 13in MacBook Pro for travel, and a large screen when at home. Thanks for the great video.
One of the really detailed and amazing videos. Thanks a lot.
Thanks!
You only need one logitech connecter to connect the mouse and keyboard, if you use the software below.

I have no idea what I'm doing, but I've bought some of these cables and will figure it out! This is so helpful!
Maureen B stuck in 2015 still lol
Can anyone explain why you can't just use the macbook open and use the built in keyboard and pad?
You certainly can. It just gets a bit distracting with two screens in front of you
@@Reviewlamp I finally got more specific directions from Apple - though still waiting for [hopefully] the proper adapter this time from Amazon to work.
Yes, and what you say might be true if you were watching a video - but if so you could simply turn the screen away. However, my need for this is not even video watching, but doing art work.
And someone had posted that the video did not show closing the laptop, and they could not get it to work till they closed it. The video also shows you need a keyboard and a mouse to go with the monitor, if using it for purposes that require this. This made no sense to me.. and Apple's instructions show it is 1] possible to use the keyboard and pad in the MacPro when it is used open 2] there are TWO ways you can use it open... 1 is mirroring - which means you see the same thing on both screens. 2 is extending - which means you can see one page or section of your screen on the laptop, another on the monitor.
I knew this had to be possible, because I have observed my brother-in-law - a movie editor - do this on two huge monitors side by side.. where he worked on lighting of stills from a scene.
If I can get this to work, it will be brilliant! I will have a larger screen for working on art to size for picture books, and if it works right, might be able to keep the tools for the program showing on the laptop. Either way, working larger is my main goal.
Thank you. This was one of the clearest and most helpful videos I’ve come across. I’m interested in splitting my screen between the two monitors. Do you have a video on how to do that, please?
You are one good man
Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I have a question. When I close the lid, the desktop monitor automatically went black as well. How do I make it the desktop still running with the macbook pro lid closed?
As I said in the video, you’re going to need to keep the power on your MacBook plugged in. This ensures you can close your lid and still have the monitor display the image
A very comprehensive and easy-to-follow video. You answered every question I had plus a few I didn't know I had. Thanks so much!
+925 Marbella Thank you for such a positive comment. Made my day 😀
I've got a question, lets say Im playing a game on a Macbook and its like only 60fps, but if I connect it to a monitor, will it increase it or it will still have the normal Macbook's fps? Thanks for anyone who sees and give a reply :)
+Modz Monitors cannot increase or decrease frame rates. They only play videos that the Macbook feeds them.
oh so it would still be the same then, alright thanks ever so much! :)
this helped me a lot thank you so much
Glad it helped. Please subscribe

Thank you so much. Had no idea you have to plug the MacBook to the charger for the external screen to work.
Yes, it’s unfortunately a requirement
very nice video bro keep it up
+Ali Khan Thanks!
this is great. will save heaps of money, thanks bud.
Excellent how to video. You anticipated a problem (plugging in charger to mac) that would have caused me great frustration. Thank you!
+Winston Reed Glad it helped.
Excellent video , not only because of its clarity, but also because of two key takeaways:-
(1) MacBook Pros used to have USBs and HDMI ports (if only!) and
(2) your MacBook Pro needs to be CONNECTED TO A POWER SOURCE in order to use an external monitor. (the solution to the problem which brought men here 9n the first place).
To which I say: "Come on, Apple - you're supposed to be making life easier, remember ?
Thanks for the comment.
Wow this really helped ty so much!!!!
+Callum Plays Glad it helped
I plugged hdmi into tv and MacBook Pro but nothings happening 😢

I need help, everytime I close my laptop while using my monitor, the monitor turns off so I have to keep my laptop open. Can you help me?
+Scrub Do you have the charger plugged into your laptop when you close it? If you don't have the charger plugged in, it won't display to the monitor.

Scrub How did you fix it?
This said the video had 666 comments so I just add a random comment cuz that’s a weird number

Thank you so much, i have watched countless videos on this & all are showing about adapters & such, yours is the best i have come across, straight forward, easy to follow, my search is over now, i am enlightened, Thank you :-)
Just one question though, if using a logitech keyboard then where would my command key be, i do not see the command key in that keyboard. Thank you
i need help i cant figure out what cable i need to connect my macbook pro to my monitor the monitor has this big blue vga port. but also hdmi..
+samsensation786 You can use an HDMI cable like this one: amzn.to/23421ZA
+ReviewLamp.com i got it wrong its vga only. The big blue with 15 pins. I didnt even know what its called lol. So im thinking a thunderport for vga? Thunderbird lol. Do you have snapchat ? Thank you for your quick response im lost.
+samsensation786 i got my macbook pro today. Hopefully the cable i ordered for vga will work.
+samsensation786 The cable you need is this one: amzn.to/24nIMwR
+ReviewLamp.com thank you!
4:48 - This is key. I wasn't aware of this little detail, as my MacBook at work refused to turn on external monitor when it was closed. Once I plugged in charger in MacBook, then closed it, voila the monitor works! 😎👊🏻
I couldn't do anything, I swear, without guys like you, thank you.
Thanks!
How can I reverse all of this? Basically, I'm trying to have TV content (audio especially) play through my MacBook speakers.
For that, its simpler just to use a pair of inexpensive speakers like these: amzn.to/2al7hVR and then use a 3.5mm cable this one to connect the TV's audio to the speakers: amzn.to/29MwLcY Now, this is provided that your TV has a 3.5mm audio output in the back.
well, it kinda worked, exept that instead of getting the mac display on my tv I lost sound and the tv screen remains black
fixed it, I am using a sharp aquos lc32d53x, instead of using input 5 which requires a DVI to HDMI cable, I used input 3 or 4, depending on which of the two hdmi ports on the TV I plugged into. so simple.
+dajowira What type of cable are you using? And what year/model of the MacBook are you using?
+dajowira And the display doesn't appear, even after selecting the source, using your TVs remote?
it was the tv settings. i have pro retina macbook early 2015 model. i was selecting for dvi to hdmi ( input 5). but should select input 3 or 4 which is hdmi cable. i am using hdmi cable now it works fine. other people are saying they had to buy a dvi to hdki cable but i didn't need to do that
Some Know and Teach Well, others know and do not Teach Well. You sir are the former. Excellent, Simple and Directly to the point. You even took the time to edit it to maintain a nice flow. Where were you when I was at DeVry? Great Job!!

Thank you! Can it work without the external keyboard? ****Update: I just did it, thank God this changes life!! It actually works for me without the external keyboard.
