- In this video we're paying tribute to the music and life of Ron Peno, lead singer of Died Pretty. We know nothing about this band, or Mr. Peno, but we're eager to learn. Let's take a listen. Enjoy!

My wife and I were close friends with Ron for over 20 years when he moved to Melbourne. We had so many great times together and always long phone call conversations.
We miss him dearly.
R.I.P RON S PENO ❤️
A little fact for you. The pretty blonde girl playing the violin is an Aussie classically trained musician named Amanda Brown who wasn't actually in this band. She was in another Australian band called The Go-Betweens,which you guys should check out as well. Very beautiful lady, one of my teenage crushes.
Oh boy, what an end of an era for me this is. All those long nights of drinking and pub crawling around St. Kilda and sitting in the corner of the The Prince of Wales hotel to watch Died Pretty play. Just a big haze of late nights for 7 years in the 80's and early 90's.. Drunken stumbling with my closest friends around Swantson street, and falling into a late night Pizza joint after seeing Died Pretty at The Venue.. and this continued into the late 90's.
As long as Died Pretty were playing, I would be there... and now it's over.
Rest In Peace and Rage Against The Pricks!
Not to forget The Punter's Club and The Tote too maybe?
@@bloffs3352 Now you're talking! Those were my hang outs too!
'Every Brilliant Eye' is a fantastic album. R.I.P. Ron Peno....thank you for hundreds (thousands?) of hours of enjoying Died Pretty's music.
I got to know Ron a few years ago. He was often dismissive of his own music, even humble about it, but I'm sure he would love that people are still discovering his band's music and its finding a new audience. Thanks for doing this one for Ron!
If you know Died Pretty, you love Died Pretty.
Lucky enough to have played a few shows as support to Died Pretty back in the day in Sydney at the time of the release of the classic "Doughboy Hollow".
They played this song at soundcheck and us who were big fanboys anyway were like "this is new" and "Wow!"
Very fond memories of this incredible band and of course Ron.
Listen to anything and everything they have done.Unique and amazing stuff.
the blonde woman playing violin is Amanda Brown from The Go-Betweens
My first celebrity crush as a young bloke.
Beautiful man, beautiful song, beautiful departing gift. Doughboy Hollow album is a Died Pretty classic.
D.C. your smile has left it's mark upon my world, and
Even your barbs were like cut diamonds that you hurled, our
Disgust and drunkenness came much to their surprise, as
We roared and danced and sang with amber-clouded eyes, now
D.C. you gave me happiness and hobnob days and I will
Cherish them forever and when I get the blues and greys
D.C. you raised some backs up by the things you said, and
You stood your ground while weaker ones just turned and fled, but
When it came time to count your foes amongst your friends, well
There was respect and so much love that never ends, 'cos
But now you're gone, it's such a sad thing, and as we dissolve into dark
Behind these questions are these answers and this song's to say goodbye
I don't think I've ever heard of this guy before. It's amazing how much musicians and music there is in the world.
Died Pretty on UK TV in 1989. Maybe they just weren't pretentious enough for the fame game. Got no idea: ruclips.net/video/-8DGB_QIDzg/видео.html
The first time I'd ever heard of Elvis Presley was also only on the day he died!
But I was only 7 then, too 😆
@@mightyV444 You are pretty lucky to have only known him on the day he died. That's quite an introduction, don't you think.
Guess what KID!?! There's a bloke that died today and he's the King Of Rock 'n' Roll. Never heard him. Watch the news, you'll get snippets of his best work! He was a good looking bloke that got all fat. He sang songs about dogs and being in jail. Real hard man!
@@Robbo766 - That sounded more like the Hollywood movie version of how it really happened, but I like it 😄👍
@@mightyV444 No, that's how it happened. He was a good looking bloke and he got fat because he ate Fools Gold sandwiches and he died on the toilet, the poor bastard. It's not a Hollywood movie. IT really did happen! Hollywood can't make that shit up.. Certainly not now that WOKE have them in a stranglehold.
I used to see them as early as 1984. It's very hard to explain the Aussie music scene in Sydney and Melbourne, because there were so many different styles. It was never monolithic. You had the usual fad chasers like Funk-Pop bands like I'm Talking and QED, you had Synth bands like Kids In The Kitchen, Real Life and Pseudo Echo. But we also had this underground that was churning out quality groups that quickly ditched Australia for England. The Birthday Party had split and The Scientists, Go-Betweens, Triffids and Laughing Clowns were in Europe. Died Pretty just felt like the great white hope of that year. Australian music was still quite healthy, but you were never sure if up-and-comings like The Wreckery and Beasts Of Bourbon would ever live up to promise or they'd fall apart. Died Pretty were just perfect. Ron Peno was a sweet guy and a fairly complicated character. I'm still quite sad of his passing. I have to admit.. I only wanted to listen to this song again through your reaction video and not on its own. Thank you.
I highly recommend
Died Pretty - Stoneage Cinderella (ultimate remaster) stereomusicvideo
Died Pretty - Winterland nzoz1987
Died Pretty - Everybody Moves
All three are great songs, but my vote especially goes for Stoneage Cinderella.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Hayley, you were more than just a Countdown kid. You saw non-Countdown bands live and you knew their music. You weren't just some shallow kid chasing George Michael around town. I'm curious to know i fyou gave up all pop music when you got onto Died Pretty, or were you still into Pop. I can't imagine anybody that enjoys Died Pretty enjoying Wa Wa Nee. You know what I mean?
@@Robbo766 Well, yes... I think I am more than just an ex-Countdown kid as a human being that's lived a life, lol.
I saw no reason why I couldn't like both Wa Wa Nee and Died Pretty. I haven't been a Countdown kid in forty years. I gave up Countdown in 1983. I still enjoyed mainstream pop music, and Gillian and I did chase WHAM! when they came to Australia. But we also went to Dance clubs/parties and we checked out a lot of bands. We were conditioned by virtue of living in Melbourne, where you get both mainstream pop and alternative rock/art, whathaveyou. I wasn't going to put on an Indi cap and shun off pop music. I just enjoyed what I enjoyed. The more things one enjoys, the beter life gets to be..
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 Hayley, you and Gillian (or ''PUPS" as you've always seemed to have called her! You really do have a tolerant little sister there.. Count your lucky stars!) are just great people!
Good on you for liking WHAM and Died Pretty at the same time. No snobbery, no immaturity.. Just like it! I really do wish you two were my little sisters!
I don't know if I could have you as a wife, Hayley! You are a bit of an Aunt Mimi and I don't know if I could have Gillian as a wife, because she'd probably bully me into watching Countdown Classics or some Countdown re-runs on Rage...
But you two are great people! Not sure if I would want my little sister to run off with my best friend and marry him. Is your older brother still dirty about that?
Does your older brother feel okay with Pups dating and marrying his best mate?
@@Robbo766 Thank you very much, Mr Robbo. That is nice of you to say. I have been calling Gillian ''Pups'' since the early 70's. Everybody except for the school teachers and our mum referred to her as 'Pups'. Even her husband still calls her by that name. She tolerates it because she likes the name.
Robbo, my feelings are completely mutural. I couldn't have you as a husband. You would drive me mad. You are a bit of a Warrick Capper!
I assure you, Gillian would not have bullied you into watching Countdown re-runs. She took very little interest in Countdown nostalgia. She's only been thinking back on it this year.
I'm not at liberty to talk about my sister's marital affairs.
Died Pretty were one of the first non-mainstream groups that I got to see in 1985, and to describe Ronny on stage would be repeating my sister's post. 'D.C.' is one of their more accessible tracks, and is a song that takes me back to 1991. I was just a carefree student that enjoyed traveling and lapping up the sun in Sydney. The song is about somebody whose life had ended and was a hit around the time my life was just beginning.
RIP Ron Peno
Thank you for being nice to me.
Thank you so much for reviewing this great song! Great band who for years were tipped to crossover into mainstream popularity but never quite made it. With the wonderful Amanda Brown on violin. It was such a pleasure to see these guys play.
Anything off 'Doughboy Hollow' is worth a listen. Great album.
Thanks for the tribute to the great Ron. D.C. is a good place to start with Died Pretty. I first saw them in 1984 which means I saw them evolve from good to brilliant in a short span of time.
I've always found this song touching and slightly haunting. It feels very different hearing it now.
RIP Ron Peno
It does feel different hearing this song now. I've listened to the song repeatedly today.
@@Win_Lose116 It definitely gets under the skin, and comes from a real place.
I'm hearing this song for the first time too and am liking it a lot. Too bad it's due to a sad occasion, though.
Give ''Stoneage Cinderella'' a listen/a watch..
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 - Oh wow! Quite a bit rougher than 'DC'! Not bad, though! 😀👍 *Edit:* Yeah, I too did get an Iggy vibe from the vocals (I just read your posting) but thought I'd rather not mention it as I know how you feel about him 😅
@@mightyV444 The Iggy Pop thing was a long time ago. I still have an impression of him that was formed on that day, but that incident doesn't always spring to mind when I think of him. You are free to mention Iggy Pop to me and Gillian. We're not sensitive about it. Anyway, that's what you get with Died Pretty. Plenty of nice songs in their catalogue.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 - Alright then! 😊👍 Even Iggy does also have some *good* songs! I think it was 'Real Wild Child (Wild One)' that had brought him onto my 📡, only in '87 ...and I just found out that was actually a cover of an Australian(!) song from the late 50'! 😳😄
@@mightyV444 Yes, ''Real Wild Child (Wild One)'' is an Australian song from the 50's originally recorded by Johnny O'Keefe. Poor bugger.
I first saw these guys in 1985, and Ron Peno was mesmerising. A mix of Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison, full of humour and energy. I saw them a few times after that. Some gigs were amazing, and others could be quite disappointing. They didn't really force a moment to happen, but let it happen.
Stoneage Cinderella was one of my favourites when I first became aware of them.
Cheers,
Hayley
I didn't know this piece of Died Pretty at all, besides, Ron Peno's vocals are completely unrecognizable to me here, as if his voice had changed completely compared to the bands's early years ! Even musically, it's still much more accessible and poppy compared to what I knew from Died Pretty !!! I must say I prefer their early songs. Try the tracks "Just Skin", "Blue Sky Day" or "Laughing Boy" from their debut studio album Free Dirt (1986).
'Stops and Starts' is another killer Died Pretty track worthy of investigation.
This band is completely new to me but i really like the song. I'll have to find out more.
My sister and I used to see them back in 1985/86.
@@liveitup67 My first impressions are definitely positive.
@@colrhodes377 This song is one of their more accessible numbers. You might like Stoneage Cinderella - one of their earlier songs.
@@colrhodes377 And hello!
@@liveitup67 okay, I'll look it up.
You really missed out they were amazing.
Glad you reviewed .
I miss Ron.
Stoneage Cinderella (ultimate remaster) should be checked out
Have you guys done any Nash The Slash? I'm pretty sure he's Canadian.
We have not. And we haven't heard that name in a long time...
@@hanierfamily I think the first thing I ever heard by him was "Dead Man's Curve" and I was hooked.
@@hanierfamily How interesting! I remember the ''Dead Man's Curve'' video popping up on Countdown back in the early 80's. We just knew him as a mummified Canadian, and that he supported Gary Numan on his North American tour. I don't know if Gary Numan ditched James Freud (who I've mentioned a few times, and who got to work with Numan) for Nash. You guys might like to do a comparison video on ''Dead Man's Curve'' (Jan & Dean vs. Nash The Slash).
Louis Tillet also recently passed away. Would love to see Carousel or even Wet Taxis with Sailors Lament
@@BenTurner-vz7cr I heard he passed away. Another great (if not, undermined) loss to Australian music.
Can't wait for my Robert Palmer you are in my system request
Music video version
I haven't heard that song since it had been a Hit in 1983! 😀 I remember him playing a Simmons e-drum kit at some point in the clip, and then-13-year-old me thought that was pretty cool 😁
I recommend you the band called Beach House and the song Myth.
Amazing song ❤
