- Going through the process of setting up a Windows 98 machine in PCEM 17 and showing off a couple games in it.
PCEM is the point where a virtual machine and an emulator converge because it's emulating an entire IBM pc with your chosen hardware configuration instead of just passing directly through to the host's hardware.
In this video I setup an emulated system with a Pentium MMX 233, SoundBlaster 16, and a Voodoo 3 3000.
PCEM itself:
pcem-emulator.co.uk/
Pack of files to setup PCEM: drive.google.com/file/d/1wikK...
Driver ISO by itself for anyone that wants just that:
anonfiles.com/C4417eZ0y4/98St...
Chex Quest Download (as of this writing it's at the top of the game list on this page)
www.chucktropolis.com/gamers.htm - Игры
Update: I somehow messed up and gave y'all a folder full of various console bios from my emulation stash instead of the PCEM hardware bios. I'm updating the GDrive upload to fix that mistake as we speak.
Seems I may have accidentally uploaded a bios folder from my PCSX2 folder instead of my PCEM folder
Edit: Hello everyone that's here because Linus did a video about PCEM and you started looking up more information. I do other stuff with emulation, virtual machines, and LPing games on my channel if anyone wants to check it out.
Edit: some people are having issues with the Driver ISO being missing and GDrive doesn't seem to like it, so I've added a download link to another host with just the driver ISO.
Thanks so much! You got me up and running with PCem fast. This thing is amazing!!!
Thank you for your time and effort for this. I have been trying to run Windows 98 on VMware with a Ryzen machine, but PCem and your video is a marvel.
No problem
PCEM is truly an amazing tool that I think will become the backbone for IBM PC software preservation since you can emulate exact components and run it in a re-creation of the environment it was designed for.
@@cryptidproductions3160 Theres just one issue I'd like to ask, whenever I load a new iso to CDROM the PCem crashes.. Is this normal?
@@eakca88 Not it is not and that's entirely new behavior I've never experienced or seen documented on the forums before
Make sure the ISOs are good and you have the PCEM folder exempted in the settings if you're running anti-virus
You also try making a new PCEM machine and see if it behaves the same way
If all else fails re-install PCEM from scratch, sometimes weird stuff can happen to the config files under rare circumstances
Yes, PCem is exactly what we need, thanks to PCem team, they're good lads, but PCem is built like shit, it's laggy af on Core i5 12400f, when i select something above Socket 7.
I hope this project will grow and all the problems will be solved

There is an old PC Adventure game from the 90's that is a favorite of mine called "Bad Day on the Midway", very strange game. I've tried playing this game with DOSBox/Win3.11 and DOSBox-X/Win98se, and could never get it to play without some sort of problems. With PCem I've been able for the first time to play the game without a hitch, just like if I was playing it on my Socket 7 retro machine. I had to do some fine tuning of the settings, but it plays flawlessly with PCem. I'm beyond impressed!
Worked flawlessly! Thank you for this!

Thank you so much, your rom pack is a lifesaver, finally got my first machine up :)
No problem
That seems to be where a lot of people get stuck because the official forums seem to think telling people where to find 20+ year old bios from out-of-date PC hardware is going to get them sued
@@cryptidproductions3160 Even Microsoft tolerates old windows versions being distributed!
@@trash_miner Yeah
There's ISO and Keys for legacy versions of Windows everywhere but MS never bothers to DMCA them because there's no viable commercial use for them
I think copyright issues with components they just license instead of own are the only reason they don't just make old versions freeware at EOL
Amazing tutorial! Thanks!
Thanks for this video. After setting up a Win98SE machine with the same hardware settings as yours, the sound is very stuttery. Task manager shows PCEM using about 19% of CPU, so I doubt its my machine not being able to handle it. Any ideas?
What CPU do you have?
To me too... Just the sound stuttery and task about 50% without any service. Rizen 5 1400 and rx 460 here... 😆
Um, quick question, since it's an "emulated HDD" - ah, where or how do I copy over a .exe that isn't in an .ISO format (or part of it) but rather just as is or as part of a .zip file.
You have to use a program like any-to-ISO to make an ISO with the file on it to mount.
There's no way to directly transfer files directly from the host machine into PCEM without really fiddly and complicated networking stuff
@@cryptidproductions3160 Noted. Thank you.
Apparently, I'm getting a "kernel 32" error. O_O lol wtf
oohh.. computers.. why can't you just be simple. Sshh
Thanks so much for all the help here!

very helpful. thanks alot from germany :D

Stupid question:
If I change the, ah, current CPU and/or Display, ah, selections... would something bad happen?
For example, I'm awfully tempted to switch from Pentium MMX 160 to MMX 233. . .
As long as you don't change the motherboard being emulated changing the CPU is fine
Changing the GPU would require removing the old drivers and installing the new ones
I've followed your video to the letter, point by point. I've been trying for, I don't know, 2 hours now, to figure out this "OEMCD001"
I used the files you've provided and everything. I'm so confused. Sorry, I'm not techy
Hope you can help. It'd be much much appreciated.
So excited to finally be able to play JumpStart and The Magic Schoolbus
I've been looking for the Chex Quest sequels for ages. I had heard rumors of their existence, but I could never find them, until today!
Yeah
One sequel was distributed only online and the other was made years later as a personal project from one of the developers
So they were pretty obscure and hard to come by before one of the devs put together a complete pack and uploaded it to his website
That was nice, but I would for sure enjoy it a ittle bit more if have tried some other Glide based games. Nice videos and thanks for sharing drivers. That was cool.
There's other games tested on their own around my channel and some of them like Paintbrawl 2 are Glide based.
Can this load an old cd game straight from the cd drive? Floppy disk drive? I have a USB 3.5 floppy drive and the original simcity 2000 floppy disks. I'd love to load them and play it.
I wouldn't recommend it because it takes a lot of CPU power for it to directly access the host media drives
You're better off ripping disc images and mounting them in PCEM's virtual drives
If you have no sound, recreate a machine with the same HDD and the same configurations, it may help.
Also, thanks for the guide!

Hi. How are you?
Question: how do I fix the "oemcdoo1 missing. No drivers found, aborting installation." then it'll go to another screen where it says:
"Dive driver not found: ' OEMCD001 '.
No valid CDROM device drivers selected
The windows 98 Setup files were not found.
A:\>
... that's what appeared.
But overall, fantastic video. I've been trying for years (on, off) to run Win 98 on VM. I could never figure it out. I'm not techy at all. And this videos seems so simple. Hope you can help me figure what I did wrong.
I feel like I am so close. I am FINALLY play JumpStart and The Magic School Bus.
I want to created a folder with random files, and converted it to an .iso, so I can transfer them to my PCem with Windows 98. Could you do a video showing us how to do that?
Download AnyToISO and use the folder-to-ISO tab to convert your folder
It's a pretty self-explanatory piece of software with a simple UI
It says my "computer does not have a hard disk, your hard disk is not functioning correctly, or your hard disk requires a special device driver". I have been trying things for hours to no avail. I have an SSD and I'm wondering if thats the issue. Im going to try putting everything on the hdd and see if that does anything. but if doesnt help, could I get some assistance??
That's strange, I run my PCEM stuff off a partition on an SSD with no issues
Did you actually create the HDD image within PCEM?
@@cryptidproductions3160 finally got around to getting it up an running. Using your sources and others and forums and such. Thank you for help, your isos worked flawlessly for me. Was trying to play Tom Clancy's: Rainbow 6 Rogue Spear. But yeah moving to hdd entirely may have not fixed it. But after enough messing around it ended up working on the hdd. So idk

I try to promote this software and explain it as much as I can since there's not many in depth videos or guides on it
8:58 Right after i selected the 1. option, it loads the stuff but before i get to the blue screen the windows closes and that's it.
Anyone a solution for this problem? Help would be nice.
It was a challenge, but I did it.
My version of Windows is in spanish, so your boot disk was not compatible. Then I tried looking for one for my language, but it was missing the first option (Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM).
My solution: set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first. From there it was easy.
Thanks for the video!

Sometimes there's weird quirks with localizations of software like that
the sound is very laggy for me on the emulator. anyway to fix? also ty for the upload.
Usually that means you're trying to emulate a faster CPU than your host machine can handle so the emulation is slowing down
Try dropping the speed of the CPU down in PCEMs hardware settings until the emulation speed indicator at the top of the windows remains at 100%
I'm only seeing a place to control the speed in the display tab in the "configure PCEM" and none of that worked. But I'm not sure if I'm in the right place.
@@lucius_12 When you first start PCEM you'll see your list of machines.
Highlight your machine by clicking it on the list and press the hammer and wrench button to bring the hardware configuration menu back up
You can then go back to the CPU/Motherboard tab and change the CPU to a slower chip. The number in the CPU name is the clock speed in Mhz.
So a Pentium 75 is a 75Mhz CPU and a Pentium 133 is a 133Mhz CPU
@@cryptidproductions3160 Thank you so much, this worked for me. I changed the chipset to Pentium 133 and the audio is working fine now.
-shrugs- not sure, but it doesnt matter which harddrive I used right?
I mean, the files you've provided, I've put them all onto my secondary hard drive i.e. (E:) instead of (C:)
the voodoo 3dfx card doesn't show up as an option. any idea why?
fixed redownloaded and re extracted.
I have done step by step as film, but when I tried to run game with acceleration 3d games don't see this acceleration, and I can run it only in software mode ... what is wrong ..
Did you install the wrong Voodoo drivers off the ISO?
I included driver packages for four different Voodoo cards

I love promoting this software and getting it more love since it was pretty niche and didn't get the attention it deserved before Linus did a video on it
I am having an issue with the windows 95 setup files were not found.
I have only installed Windows 95 in this software ONCE so I'm not exactly an expert there
Are you using both an Windows 95 ISO and a boot disc image?
@@cryptidproductions3160 I think I solved it, I just deleted everything and restarted because it worked before and now it is working
@@charliemaybe Sometimes old OSs can do weird things
Oh, and just as a simple thank you.
If you didn't know. There's an "online public beta" version of Gran Turismo 4 that actually works. I'm saying it works because, I'm an idiot like me who took over 2+ days to figure (that ended in me just asking some people) what DNS actually means. Ultimately, letting me play a PS2 with actual players around the globe. . . that's cool.
What kind of actual hardware are you running? Because it's chugging for me.. i've got an AMD FX CPU 8 core.. and it's running horrendously.
PCEM is heavily single-threaded and the old FX chips have really bad single-core performance because the design was focused on core count over all else
The footage in the video was capped on an R5 5600X, which is signifgantly faster.
@@cryptidproductions3160 so basically pcem needs a powerfull cpu instead of gpu?
@@nashcomp Yes
PCEM is heavily CPU bound and heavily single-threaded so you need a CPU with good single core performance to emulate chips over a certain clock speed
@@cryptidproductions3160
That explains a lot.
I had to go to the lowest CPU on the list to get it to run for me.
Thx for the video :)

Can you do a tutorial on how to install PCEM on Linux and on a Raspberry PI 4B or 400. As well as how to create a 504MB hard drive and 2GB under DOS. From MS-DOS you could create a hard disk up to 2GB. Under Windows 95 also up to 32GB and Windows 98 up to 127GB hard disks. Can you make a guide about how to calculate the hard drive image size? I would be very grateful... Thanks in advance if you do a tutorial like this. I have all my retro stuff on a Raspberry PI not a PC. Unfortunately I don't know how to install PCEM on Linux and Raspberry Pi.
I don't own a Pi, but I can tell you off the bat that the 1.8Ghz CPU in a P4 wouldn't be able to emulate a very fast machine in PCEM because it's extermely CPU heavy
For the harddrive sizes you just increase the size the of the virtual HDD in the machine setup options
The game I’m trying to play needs a display with 256 different colors. Hell I’ll use the same bunny screen saver if it works! Also the sound isn’t working very well. Right when you added that “98 stuff folder” to install the voodoo driver is where I’m lost. You didn’t add that to the downloads folder. If you could do that that would be great!
You need to mount the 98Stuff ISO in PCEMs virtual disc drive, that's where all the drivers and software are.
As for the other issues:
1)You can just go into right click > properties and change the emulated PC's display settings to 256 colors
2)Sound issues usually mean you're trying to emulate a CPU that's faster that what your rig can handle so the emulation is slowing down under load
@@cryptidproductions3160 I do not have the option for 256. It only goes up to 16.
@@xXxKillaSkullxXx Then you need to mount that 98Stuff ISO via the CD-ROM menu up top and install the Voodoo 3 drivers within the emulated PC
@@cryptidproductions3160 would you be able to comment back a quick step by step or is it a bit involved?
@@xXxKillaSkullxXx Go into the CD-Rom menu and hit load image. Then find wherever you unpacked the archive I linked and find the 98Stuff ISO
After that you should be able to go into my computer within the PCEM machine and find the 98Stuff "CD" in the disc drive
Everything for configuring the machine driver and software-wise will be in there
