@UCmQzOzqfRBeCmsAdHs4is%F0%9F%98%8ADg RUclips comments can be very confusing, I can't see a comment where I responded to you but it was a pleasure anyway!
@@steve24822 Posted wrong place. RUclips new layout is less than inspiring. Anyway, excellent video you made. I would have never been able to figure this program out on my own. Your tutorial made it a walk in the park. I got it up and running and installed Mig Alley, a 1999 flight sim and it works. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get this 500mb game from PCem to Win10. Another fellow figured out how to make it run under W10 which allows modern joystick and better resolutions. He says, "Now you need to extract the installed game from the Virtual Machine. PCEM is pretty good here, you can just mount the drives you used in Win 10 and copy over what you need. The next steps can be followed in Win 10..." No idea what he's talking about. Mount what drives where? Searching PCem forum and the Web has been fruitless.
@@steve24822 Thanks soo much for helping although I change the sound to Sound Blaster AWE6 because Sound Blaster 16 had no sound on my laptop but Sound AWE6 worked so thanks.
Mate, this is an incredible tutorial. Years ago I got this super obscure point-and-click game called Vikings from my nan back when I got a Windows Vista PC, but I never got to play it as the install .exe was so old it wouldn't register Vista as a valid OS. The company that developed and produced the game is long gone, and no patches were ever released; this game probably could be considered lost media, as I've seen no discussion on any forums about it. The specification the game asks for pretty much map to exactly the spec in this video, and with some free time over Christmas I decided to follow this and see if it would work. Happy to say it works like a dream, and I'm finally playing a game I got over 16 years ago. 😂
literally one of the best instruction videos i've ever watched, and i haven't even finished it all yet. if only all instruction videos were like yours!
Thank you so much for this - although the video was long you were very thorough and were the only one to provide a full detailed setup that didn't crash. Should've started with you.
While some might go "why are they explaining 7zip" - even if I already know that, and can do that - it is incredible kind of you and very charming that you do not assume any knowledge and explain each step in a way that most if not all people can set this up nicely. Yes, the video is long but its speed is perfect to work alongside it without any rush or need to pause the video.
Top notch instruction video! I couldn't get Windows 98 to work in VMware, so I decided to try PCem out. This is probably the best tutorial video I've come across for this, very in-depth and thorough! My install went smoothly, installed it alongside your video. Thanks for this outstanding video!
Thank you, glad it worked well for you. As long as you have a powerful enough PC, PCEm is probably the best choice. They all have their positive and negative points though.
I'm kind of surpriced over how easy PCem is to use, and set up. I had original Windows-cd's laying around, and ripped some ISO's. Found a generic boot-disc, and it was just a breeze. Why haven't more people found this little gem of a software.
Thank you so much for this video! I was hesitant at first because of the length of the video, but it really doesn't have any filler and is all relevant and super easy to follow. Awesome work!
Thank you for making this tutorial! I was able to get Windows 98 up and running with no issues for my spouse who’s been wanting to play a bunch of their favorite computer games from the 90’s!
Thank you so much!! I am really bad with stuff like this and sometimes during the tutorial I didn't even know what I was doing - BUT it worked. Thank you so much. Now I can go down memory lane with all my childhood games
Brilliant video. Thank you ever so much. [ In order to run a bunch of 1990s learning software, I had tried to run Win98 as a straight install, and also as a VirtualBox client OS. Major issues with both. PCEm works ever so wonderfully. ]
Thanks for a thorough tutorial, it was very useful. I have loads of old games lying around and just want to be able to play them again. Looking forward to future content. Thanks again
wow this turned out better than expected! Had to reinstal and pick beefier hardware cause NFS4 wasnt working too good on voodoo2, chose 233mmx and voodoo3 we will see if its good enough for it or NFS Porsche
You can substitute anyburn with simply mounting the W98 disk under Win10/11. VHD files are read write. The only requirement is to shut down your emulated OS.
@steve24822 Installed and got Windows98 working with VirtualBox, with the help of your last tutorial. However couldn't get the sound card working and with no sound and a terrible lag HoMM2 was unplayable. Excited for this new go. Thanks so much for these videos, really helpful, easy to follow and enjoyable! So after doing some cooking while waiting Windows to install I got everything running. I saw that you had your emulation speed was quite firmly at 100%. In my case it's changing from 30 to 100 %, but sadly more at the 30% end. When running Heroes of Might and Magic II, it accelerated to about 60 %, but still lags (music and graphics). I chose the Pentium MSS166 as you recommended, and also advised that it functioned for you but maybe not for everyone. Does this choice have to do with the host computers' system in relation to the emulators system? And would you, or anybody for that matter, have an advice how to proceed? Just creating emulators and trying different system's? Anyhows, thanx million. Great video!
Yes, it takes a powerfull pc to emulate more recent pc's. With that said, I'm able to run 100% up to around 233 mhz Pentium 1 with sound, on a Ryzen 5 3600.
PII's start to drop the emulation accuracy, and a PII at 450 mhz only run 80-90% at idle. When loading a newer Windows like XP, it can drop as low as 40%, but it idles okay when loaded. I just can't expect any gaming on the system.
Amazing tutorial. I was able to get 3 of my old games working on here! There was a fourth game that said I needed to install quicktime(tm) in order for it to work. Can you help with that?
Thank you so much for this amazing and detailed tutorial. However, I experience a problem since the installation of windows which is related to the speed of the mouse pointer. It is super fast, jerky and uncontrollable, in fact I have been doing the whole procedure using the keyboard. I have tried slowing down on windows the pointer speed on both windows 98 and my windows 11 (host) but no dice. Do you have any suggestions for me on this? Thanks in advance!
Just want to share something. I have ImgBurn but I was curious what other programs will create isos so I googled it and found a blurb about 7-Zip being able to do that. Well shoot, I've had that for years so I just now tried it by putting an old win98 game in the cd, launching 7-Zip, clicking the up arrow until I got to \\. and hit F5 (Copy), gave it a destination folder in the 3dot dropdown and it created the iso and called it E.iso so I changed that to the game's name. Just wanted you to know :)
@Nevets Absolute magic to get this working again. Has anyone found a way to succesfully get Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 working on PCEM with Windows 98? I constantly get the "Please insert the correct CD-ROM" error.
So I figured out how to install old games using my USB disk drive. However I closed the computer down while it was still selected and now I cannot get the Windows 98 virtual computer to bootup.
I installed Rogue Squadron, but it prompts me to set it up for the 3D video card settings. When I try to go in that part of the settings, PCem immediately crashes. I'm doing this on Linux Mint though, not sure if that matters.
Hey, so I downloaded a Pac-Man All-Stars iso and installed it and everything and then press play, I get through the intro cinematics and then it immediately gives me a “This program has performed an illegal operation and will now be shut down” and now everytime I press play it just gives me the intro and keeps crashing. What do I do?
Midway through my installation I lost control of my mouse and had to use the keys to finish the installation. I have tried some of the driver installations through Add new hardware but none of them worked. Did this happen to anyone else and if so how did you fix it?
Something I've run into, I made a .vhd that was 32gb and running the OEM windows 98SE installer, it asked me if I wanted to use large file support, (or whatever it's called can't remember the exact description) anyways, after a reset, the installer REFUSES to read the .iso image after starting the format attempt. Has anyone else run into this problem? HALP!
Successfully installed Windows 98, now how do I add my Zip drive? EDIT: It read the iomega CD and installed some applications, but assigned no new drive.
I set one up today but the sound has an echo to it and that's with the sound driver installed also even with the 256 color the appearance is off which sound driver did you use.

I heard that some overcame the issue but for some reason I couldn't find a solution yet : (((
Plug your xbox 360 wired controller or the dongle of a wireless one into an ordinary USB2 port and in Windows 10 click the magnifying glass to the right of the Start button in the taskbar and type controll for controller and as soon as you hit that second L, you'll see Set up USB game controllers. Launch it and click on properties and rotate the sticks in 'full throw' circles and try all the buttons. Windows 10 should have already done all the setup for you but I've heard if you have a non-Microsoft wireless wannabe, you can have problems. The real thing is practically impossible to buy anymore so you might try an xbox one controller. Hope you get it worked out. Oh, if that all worked fine but not in PCem, did you set it up in PCem - you know, click the joystick icon and go through the process? Whether you choose 4 button or 8 button you still have to click the rectangle that says Joystick 1 and in the Device dropdown select xinput and OK if you make any changes.
