The new home of CryptidProductions, run by some random lowkey-redneck from Iowa that also happens to have a love for tech, pop-culture, and gaming.
I plan to produce content like game reviews/retrospectives, demos/footage of games (particularly emulator tests) and the occasional random vblog about tech or time-lapse drawing video. I feel like this is the place to put the general disclaimer for ass-coverage that though my content tends to be on the tame side (any adult content in the gameplay itself not-withstanding) IT IS NOT intended for young children under 13.
Though very rarely and nothing that would get the audio track an explicit label I do sometimes curse and I don't censor any objectionable content that might be in the underlaying footage unless it might run afoul of RUclips's guidelines so my videos range from PG-13 to R depending on WHAT I'm covering.
This is also a hobby that's completely unsponsored and unmonetized so the opinions within are solely my own.

Amendium to the longer video showing a quick demo of 60FPS mode using vblank. Not sure I've never has a reason to mess with the networking stuff in PCEM
I love how you can actually pick a level to start playing the game in instead of having to start from the beginning; not to mention there's a freaking "no monsters" option, LOL! I'm guessing that's for inexperienced players who want to practice or something?
The no monsters option may have been intended for people that were loading custom maps and just testing the layout and mechanics Since the Doom 95 port was released in late 1996 when custom mapping was already in full swing

@@n.d.engleson6499 Those are for difficulty tweaking and the highest difficulty setting in the vanilla game has has those behaviors already
@@cryptidproductions3160 Then the no monsters thing should be for traversing and getting to know the maps before getting into the game; that’s actually how I aced this game years later.

There is an old PC Adventure game from the 90's that is a favorite of mine called "Bad Day on the Midway", very strange game. I've tried playing this game with DOSBox/Win3.11 and DOSBox-X/Win98se, and could never get it to play without some sort of problems. With PCem I've been able for the first time to play the game without a hitch, just like if I was playing it on my Socket 7 retro machine. I had to do some fine tuning of the settings, but it plays flawlessly with PCem. I'm beyond impressed!

how's the input lag ? is it good enough to play something hardcore, like Nightmare/Godlike bots in Q3/UT99 ?
VMWare is pretty good about keeping the mouse movement smooth and the input lag down so it feels like you're really using the OS and software nativily
@CryptidProductions the host has shut down their service and your iso file is no longer available via the link. This has to be recent, I remember following the link a few weeks ago. Maybe a bit longer but just to let you know.

Can you do a tutorial on how to install PCEM on Linux and on a Raspberry PI 4B or 400. As well as how to create a 504MB hard drive and 2GB under DOS. From MS-DOS you could create a hard disk up to 2GB. Under Windows 95 also up to 32GB and Windows 98 up to 127GB hard disks. Can you make a guide about how to calculate the hard drive image size? I would be very grateful... Thanks in advance if you do a tutorial like this. I have all my retro stuff on a Raspberry PI not a PC. Unfortunately I don't know how to install PCEM on Linux and Raspberry Pi.
I don't own a Pi, but I can tell you off the bat that the 1.8Ghz CPU in a P4 wouldn't be able to emulate a very fast machine in PCEM because it's extermely CPU heavy For the harddrive sizes you just increase the size the of the virtual HDD in the machine setup options

They might be games that don't work in high-color mode and have to be run with the systems color depth set to 256 colors

@@trash_miner Yeah There's ISO and Keys for legacy versions of Windows everywhere but MS never bothers to DMCA them because there's no viable commercial use for them I think copyright issues with components they just license instead of own are the only reason they don't just make old versions freeware at EOL

No problem It can be a little tricky finding stuff for Windows 9x installation now since it's use-case is only PC enthusiasts experimenting with old rigs or virtualization at this point

I tried some games and they were running really slow, fps is horrible. Some of them are so bad that they're practically unplayable. I don't know how to solve that. Anyone know what I can do?
1)Was your emulation speed remaining at 100%? 2)What games were you trying to run?
@@cryptidproductions3160 1) If that's the % up in the left corner then yes it's been 100% the entire time. 2) I was trying to run some old swedish games, I can unfortunately not give any more info than that. All I know is they should run fine on Win98 since my old PC (where I used to play them back in the day) ran them just fine
@@smarre12 Without knowing the exact games I can't say for sure, but I suspect they're to new for a Pentium 233 to run at a decent framerate
Oh, and just as a simple thank you. If you didn't know. There's an "online public beta" version of Gran Turismo 4 that actually works. I'm saying it works because, I'm an idiot like me who took over 2+ days to figure (that ended in me just asking some people) what DNS actually means. Ultimately, letting me play a PS2 with actual players around the globe. . . that's cool.
Stupid question: If I change the, ah, current CPU and/or Display, ah, selections... would something bad happen? For example, I'm awfully tempted to switch from Pentium MMX 160 to MMX 233. . .
As long as you don't change the motherboard being emulated changing the CPU is fine Changing the GPU would require removing the old drivers and installing the new ones
Um, quick question, since it's an "emulated HDD" - ah, where or how do I copy over a .exe that isn't in an .ISO format (or part of it) but rather just as is or as part of a .zip file.
You have to use a program like any-to-ISO to make an ISO with the file on it to mount. There's no way to directly transfer files directly from the host machine into PCEM without really fiddly and complicated networking stuff

I don't know if this will help but computer is: i7 6700 32gb ddr4 1060 6gb 250gb ssd 2TB hdd The PCem setup I used was/is: Same as what you shows. 3DFX VooDoo 3 3000 with all the configurations you showed (4mb memory size, and 4 render threads) Pentium MMX 223 Sound Blaster 16 ------------------- Then, I just followed your instructions but still, no OEMCD001. And now, on occasion, there's a "floppy disk" error but when I reset it. It works fine again -shrugs-
Did you put the boot floppy image in the virtual floppy drive and the ISO in the virtual CD drive?

I'm guessing, the process is more or less the same if I try "installling" Windows XP. Anyhow, , THANK YOU. You have no idea how happy my inner child is to be able to play JumpStart again!!! It's been literal decades
@@emmanuelreyes8832 No problem Old edutainment games that just do like to work 100% properly on anything newer than 9x is one of the places where PCEM really shines Especially since a lot of them are those weird 16-bit games that were designed for something like DOS or Windows 3.1

Hi. How are you? Question: how do I fix the "oemcdoo1 missing. No drivers found, aborting installation." then it'll go to another screen where it says: "Dive driver not found: ' OEMCD001 '. No valid CDROM device drivers selected The windows 98 Setup files were not found. A:\> ... that's what appeared. But overall, fantastic video. I've been trying for years (on, off) to run Win 98 on VM. I could never figure it out. I'm not techy at all. And this videos seems so simple. Hope you can help me figure what I did wrong. I feel like I am so close. I am FINALLY play JumpStart and The Magic School Bus.
why is it you don't need to format your harddrive?
Most versions of Windows 98 will format it for you as part of the installation
the voodoo 3dfx card doesn't show up as an option. any idea why?

Did you install the wrong Voodoo drivers off the ISO? I included driver packages for four different Voodoo cards

I played this demo so much when I was a teenager. I had a lot of slowdowns with my P1 90mhz but I still loved it. Thanks for the video!
No problem Same here, way back in the day around 2000 I found a stack of PCGamer discs in a Goodwill that included the one with this demo and was amazed because it was one of the first really edgy games I got my hands on as a kid

Can this load an old cd game straight from the cd drive? Floppy disk drive? I have a USB 3.5 floppy drive and the original simcity 2000 floppy disks. I'd love to load them and play it.
I wouldn't recommend it because it takes a lot of CPU power for it to directly access the host media drives You're better off ripping disc images and mounting them in PCEM's virtual drives

Thanks for this video. After setting up a Win98SE machine with the same hardware settings as yours, the sound is very stuttery. Task manager shows PCEM using about 19% of CPU, so I doubt its my machine not being able to handle it. Any ideas?

I want to created a folder with random files, and converted it to an .iso, so I can transfer them to my PCem with Windows 98. Could you do a video showing us how to do that?
Download AnyToISO and use the folder-to-ISO tab to convert your folder It's a pretty self-explanatory piece of software with a simple UI
If you have no sound, recreate a machine with the same HDD and the same configurations, it may help. Also, thanks for the guide!

It was a challenge, but I did it. My version of Windows is in spanish, so your boot disk was not compatible. Then I tried looking for one for my language, but it was missing the first option (Start Windows 98 Setup from CD-ROM). My solution: set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first. From there it was easy. I've been looking for the Chex Quest sequels for ages. I had heard rumors of their existence, but I could never find them, until today!
Yeah One sequel was distributed only online and the other was made years later as a personal project from one of the developers So they were pretty obscure and hard to come by before one of the devs put together a complete pack and uploaded it to his website
I got Blood and the mod Death Wish working on an Anbernic RG353P using PortMaster. After you install the main game on your device, place the Death Wish files into the same folder. Finally, rename dw.ini to blood.ini. Death Wish will start up the next time you play. I assume you can get Cryptic Passage to work the same way.
