    I was there yesterday, and was blown away by how quickly the guys (surfers and beach-goers) responded to the cries for help. Not beat of hesitation. Remarkably brave. The footage can't capture how strong the rip was, even in the "safer" areas along the water's edge. Saw your drone, was hoping you'd be posting. :)

    I was in a similar situation once with my younger brother when I was a teenager. He was probably about 9yrs and wasn't a super strong swimmer. Nobody else was around as my siblings and cousins had started walking along the rocks on the coast. It was a very windy day. The waves were fun to play in until I realized we were getting pulled out and towards a bunch of jutted out rocks with eddies swirling. We were pulled way over from where we had started and I realized if we didn't get out right then, we'd be pulled under at the rocks and pulled out. So I grabbed him and started dragging him in to shore. I'm a strong swimmer, but it still would have been too strong for me to fight if I'd let us go any further. We were very lucky to get out and we learned our lesson that day. It's very sneaky how it happens. I'm so glad I was able to get us both back in to shore before we got hauled out. I figured I'd have survived because I can hold my breath for a long time and could swim sideways with the current and then back in to shore once released, but my little brother would not have been able to do that. Very scary stuff.

    • @carolynmacdonald7024
      @carolynmacdonald7024 2 года назад

      I could feel every wave dragging my feet out from under me and pulling very hard at my body. I was up in water just over hip height and it was a struggle to stay standing. My little brother was shorter than me of course, so he lost his footing quickly. It really feels so strong and so scary, it's unbelievable. The undertow from the waves just pulls you right in towards the rip current. It feels like Rán intends to claim your body and soul and sink you to the bottom of the ocean forever.

    • @ilikeycoloralot

      It's just a small section of outflow due to the sand surface geometry. Swim perpendicular to it, absolutely never against it. Once you're away from that section of outflow bam...you're good now. You can see it in this video how the current and foam flows, how the waves crash into the actual rip current.
      Its simply avoiding sections of "drainage"

    I've been doing Surf Life Saving since I was 4 thanks to my Mum and her Ironwoman Background.
    I've never really felt the feeling of being caught in a rip cause I was always taught to:
    1. Use the current to get out past the break quickly.
    2. I've been the rescuer.
    3. I was taught very young how to read the ocean and work with it.
    But judging by the way people freak out and the way they are when they've been involved in a rescue, I'd say its not the best feeling.

    Even people who are strong swimmers get killed in rips because they furiously try to swim out of it exhausting themselves in the process. If you are in warm sea water it is so buoyant that you can float on your back with both your feet and hands completely out of the water. I can almost take a nap in the ocean. So you just relax and know that if it is in a lifeguarded location and you got their attention you won't die. In fact you could float peacefully and warm for several days before dying from dehydration. So if you can't swim perpendicular to the beach simply float, conserve energy, and wait for help. I guess if you are really unlucky a shark will eat you. But I have been caught in 3 rips, 2 before I knew the proper way to get out of one, and I just yelled for help and then just realized I could float out here all day, there was no urgency and I didn't even half to wait for the lifeguard. The rip ended, I saw some waves heading for shore that I knew would assist me getting back in and I swam towards them. I have a hard time understanding why even an exhausted experienced swimmer can drown in such buoyant water.

    my dad has been caught in strong rip currents about 3 times now. the latest time was last year but that time he was on a private beach and it was getting dark and there was not a single person out there. he almost died but he was able to swim as hard as he could parallel to the shore for 10-15 minutes until he finally got out. if he hadn't gotten caught the previous 2 times when he was younger (the lifeguards saved him those times), he wouldn't have known what to do.
    we went to the beach today and it was the first time he's been in the water since then so we were very careful. we still almost got caught in one but the lifeguards saw us start to drift towards the pier farther out and not able to swim back so they blew the whistle at us telling us to move back but we couldn't because it was so strong. my dad started to get really worried but we rode a wave back in because luckily it didn't have a strong grip on us yet

      Parallel to the shore? Sounds like it cureled out and drained into a longitudinal current. At that point maybe swim back towards the shore if possible. Mostly these flows just follow the geometry of the ground surface, allow you to escape in the perpendicular direction. Also give you dad some floaties

    I'm a strong swimmer but have only grown up swimming in lakes and creeks and on the swim team so I don't know anything about rip currents, but I have to wonder. Obviously, if someone jumps INTO the current to save someone else, then being caught in the current isn't necessarily deadly. Is it just a tactical thing? Like, what's the trick to getting in and out? Seems to me one would simply wanna swim to one side or the other to get out of the current, rather than swimming toward shore directly against it, but I could be wrong.

    • @ThatCapeTownGuy
      @ThatCapeTownGuy  6 лет назад +1

      Adam R. Meade I knew nothing about rip currents until I captured this video. You are right. If you are stuck in a rip current, you should either swim left or right to get out of it. You can then swim easily to the shore. You can also swim further out to see, then left or right to get out of it. I have never experienced one but I believe even the strongest swimmer will get stuck. The man who went on to save his friend did not know about rip currents and that's why he got stuck. Luckily my friend who is a surfer ran in and afterwards I realized I knew the body boarder as well! Everyone should know how to spot a rip current and what to do if they land up in one.

      There is absolutely nothing dangerous about it, other than being ignorant of what to do. As a kid growing up on the ocean, I used them all the time to get further out and then body surf the waves back in. If you are clueless and try to swim against them then you wear yourself out. Someone clueless enough to do that, also probably does not know how to float or tread water in a low energy way, and so they drown.

    The first clue should have been the gulley, clearly seen at 1:56, that flows from the housing area straight to the beach. Rip currents are formed from gulleys that are usually under the breakers and can't be seen. In this case, the gulley is obvious, and swimmers should have been warned, or that area closed off. It's a natural danger zone that is always going to have a rip current so long as that gulley remains.

    Should've captures the moment when me, my dad, and my gramma were swimming we were so far out my dad could barely touch. We made it by ourselves though but my dad was the hero because he carried my gramma and took hold of my hand and we slowly got to shore that was one of the scariest things in my life because the waves were almost 4 feet up and they would smash over us and we would go under and it would take us back like 3 feet and it was really windy under the water it would like make us trip. That day I lost my board and i almost died because I let go of my dad's hand on accident and he had to tell me to push because i was getting sucked under and then they would get sucked under but i pushed really hard and gripped his hand as hard as ever and we made it

    For safety reasons everyone should know how to spot a riptide and how to get out of one. The find one look for a path oh smooth looking water between rough white water. To escape one first thing is to not panic. Then swim perpendicular to the current and parallel to the shore. Once you are out of the current you can swim to shore safely. Many people try to swim against the current and get into a situation where they are fatigued and in actual danger.

    I almost died at Makapuu Beach on Oahu when I was 17. I was body surfing, and suddenly I realized I had been taken out. I tried and tried to catch a wave, and I was so tired I was about to give up. Then I caught one and rode it in in a quite lame fashion. By that time I'd been taken way to the right where there are lots of rocks on the beach, but I missed them all. I felt like Robinson Crusoe as I lay there on the sand for a couple minutes. No one even noticed. I stood up and went home.

    rip currents cause many deaths in Turkey, black sea area. as the depth is so rocky and sand together and waves are so wild, it is much more diffecult to save them. you can not recognise if someone is dying.

      maybe go to the famous Austrailia beach named Bondi beach, the rip currents are so dangerous and so foreigners don't understand that you can die there. Bondi lifeguards has saved millions of dead bodies and drowning victims because people don't read the signs. People should swim in between the yellow & red flags the safe zone. I have been too bondi beach twice but i know their rules

      Its a strong current of water running back to the ocean from the beach. They can be very dangerous if you try to swim against them. You're supposed to let them drag you out, and then swim parallel to the beach until you're out. Or just. Dont go swimming in the ocean.

    A 14 year old just drowned a couple days ago from the currents. I'm still so sad and Idk her. I don't know how to swim and I freak out when I don't feel flooring under my feet. I am not sure how anyone else isn't scared.

      If you don't know how to swim, you should be taught in a pool with a teacher, don't be scared, its very good to know how to swim.
