    I love the Hahnemühle Watercolor Sketchbook. Not the one with 100% cotton, I don't like this at all. But the Sketchbook is wonderful and takes Watercolour beautifully.

    Jackson’s Art has a huge sale on paper and sketchbooks at the moment

      Certainly good timing but I know from lately that it tends to get expensive for shipping if you go for paper products and I just put a small order in on Thursday so I have to be good. I also want to get a feel (and an excuse) to hit an art shop this week.

      Are you in North America? I'm wondering if there is really high customs handling fee with FedEx because I might cave and take advantage of Jackson's sale.

    I have been on a similar journey, but I want a spiral binding so I can fold it back over. I had a Bee Paper one that was fun (not great paper, but I really enjoyed it). Now I really like the Kilimanjaro from Cheap Joe's. When those are done I use little paper key tags to mark them. But they definitely aren't pretty like hard or soft bound. Good luck on your hunt!

      If the spiral wasn't sitting proud of the top of the sketchbook when you have it flat I wouldn't mind but I find myself knocking against it when I'm drawing. Good luck with your hunt too!

    I am also looking for new sketchbooks, never got into the habit of keeping one because I am picky when it comes to paper. It also seems sad to me that in a world where you can get a notebook with any kind of inspiring cover you like, sketchbooks still mostly come with boring black covers. I just saw that Indigo started selling strathmore and hahnemuhle online which is nice. But it still seems like if you want the perfect sketchbook you have to make it yourself, may try Coptic binding different papers one day. In the meantime want to try the strathmore mixed media and the new hahnemuhle cotton watercolour book. For an affordable option the sm-lt mixed media album is nice

      I love the sm-lt products. I have a slim watercolour sketchbook that I thought I might save for a series since it is so slim. I also have their brown pad. I thought I was buying a sketchbook of theirs but it was actually sheets. I have bookbinding materials so I have been tempted to make my own too. Someday...

Im gravitating to brownscand greens lately..i would like to expand my brown pencils..i use strahmore i have different colors tan blue white paper i tend to go to mix media i do like the odd long strahmore you showed id lije to eventually purschase one of those..mikelle art mom🎨✍👩‍🎨

      I might do more series of favourite colours across the brands. I also have a penchant for greys. But browns can be tricky to find the right one too. I love the Derwent Drawing Chocolate, the Luminance Sepia, Polychromos Walnut Brown and the Pablo Umber, to name a few browns.

    Jackson's sketchbooks are right, as well as Khadi 150 gsm and 210 gsm bound skechbooks. Now on sale on Jackson's online shop! :P

    I find spiral bound notebooks are better for sticking things in! I’m looking at trying a few new books this year. It takes me a while to fill them. im hoping to do more if I have more sketchbooks and im less precious of them

    • @eileenreillyarts1229

      Yes they are perfect for that if you wanted to add things that would bulk up a regularly bound sketchbook.

    I *love* sketchbooks. You were so lucky to get that Beta for $4 on sale!! Similar to you, I definitely have my favourites, some precious, some not and different uses for each. Someone else mentioned the Jackson’s sale, if I weren’t committed to a “low buy” this year, I’d probably order a couple of new brands that way. I absolutely love (I mean really, I ❤ them) Etchr for watercolour since the paper is soooo lovely, but they are hardcover and people do seem to be precious with them. However, if you get one for $27-30 on sale right now, it’s nice to have on hand for good watercolour paper. It isn’t the type of sketchbook that I’d treat the same way I use cheaper books though.
    I keep a sketchbook with lightweight paper for practice sketches and coloured pencils to plan projects before painting sometimes (and for daily sketching practice). I think the one I have has 140 pages and was about $18 Cdn if that gives you an idea. I like the Stillman & Birn (Beta or Nova) for gouache and I also like the Pentallic Aqua for gouache (but prefer Etchr for watercolour). I keep some cellulose sketchbooks on hand for swatching and trying things out. I also have some Hahnemuhle and Moleskine watercolour books in smaller sizes to grab and take with me. For softcover, the Stathmore 500 travel series in 7x10 was fantastic, but it seems to be discontinued 😢. Not a huge fan of spiral bound either, but I do like having a mix of soft and hard cover depending on where I’ll be using it. I like hardcover when I know I’ll be working on my lap somewhere.
    Hopefully whatever shops you’re visiting will have a good variety to choose from and fingers crossed for a sale!! Have fun!!
    Also… absolutely LOVE the paintings in your little Strathmore panoramic book and in the Moleskine (I think? It was the sketchbook you shared where most of the paintings crossed both pages in the landscape book).

    • @eileenreillyarts1229
      @eileenreillyarts1229  Год назад +1

      Aww thank you! Yes the Moleskine was that one. I've been avoiding the Etchr ones because I'm afraid I will get too attached to them and they are a bit pricey. I've found that shipping paper does become expensive with Jackson's (makes sense) and I do want to have a feel before buying my next one. I looked at that Pentallic one last time I was at Aboveground in Toronto. Very nice but also "special." I might just go for a different format for the Stillman and Birn beta rather than the square I used (that Jackson's doesn't seem to carry at the moment). And I'll probably pick up a bit bigger Art Creations for what you describe above - working things out, sketches, notes etc. They're so cheap that I can get another little square one too.

      @@eileenreillyarts1229 Agreed, Jackson’s does cost more to ship books. I found that I can include a single A5 book in an order with some watercolour supplies and it won’t hike the price up by much if I hit their minimum order amount where they discount your shipping. You really need to give Etchr a try sometime… I’m sort of addicted to their amazing sketchbooks (so maybe you don’t want to try them? Lol).

    • @eileenreillyarts1229
      @eileenreillyarts1229  Год назад +1

      @@FaithAnnNB Yes I do that too, with shipments. I like Jackson's own watercolour paper blocks (8x10) so sometimes I throw those in. And yes, maybe I SHOULDN'T try Etchr.

    • @eileenreillyarts1229
      @eileenreillyarts1229  Год назад

      @@FaithAnnNB okay, I went to the art supply store today and I still couldn't find anything I liked that wasn't super expensive. Have you ordered via FedEx with Jackson's? I usually try to do regular post with them. Do you have to pay a handling fee on top of customs? I'm guessing you do, so $23 shipping becomes $50+

    • @FaithAnnNB
      @FaithAnnNB Год назад

      @@eileenreillyarts1229 I just looked back through my receipts and in the fall, I placed an order when Jackson’s had Etchr on sale. I ordered 4 A6 Etchr sketchbooks (2 landscape/2 portrait), 1 brush and 3 tubes of paint. My total order came to $121 Canadian and I was charged $9.93 shipping on top of that (for regular, tracked shipping… not FedEx). So, grand total of $131. I didn’t have any customs/handling fees when it arrived in Canada.
      Now, I have ordered Etchr books in Canada as well. The PaintSpot in Alberta (Edmonton?) has them… you can get free shipping with $150 orders through them, so if there’s a lot of stuff you want, it works out. The other place I’ve picked them up is Wyndham Art Supplies (Guelph?) and they have pretty good shipping if you’re in Ontario, I think. It costs more to ship to the east coast.
