Just happened across this video in my feed and dug the vibe. You're not alone in your hesitance and questioning about the hobby. I've been at this, starting very very very casually, since 2006 (thanks to standing around in toy aisles with my first kiddo), and while I think Hot Wheels is choosing the right kinds of stuff to do, there's so much in and around the hobby (fake hype, Mattel cash grabbing, sharks, scalpers, hoarders, etc.) that's made it less and less fun, and more of a competitive sport. Add in the fact that prices have gone up, and it's just enough that I'm less and less invested in it (as a hobby). Now that I order most of our groceries online (either shipped or picked up), I'm less and less tempted standing in the aisles and do A LOT LESS impulse buying, which has been good for my psyche actually. It's helped me look at it more as the kind of hobby it started as for me, where I buy just the stuff I like or have a special interest in, and skip all the hype and bs of the forums and FB groups. This goes for RLC stuff too... I've skipped several cars this year (and last) because I just DGAF about the casting or whatever, even though I know they'll end up being worth more than I'd have paid. Feels good to say "meh, I just don't care about this one..." And that's where I'm at now, and I'm good with it.

I am a collector, because I have a collection, I no longer expand it, at least not like in years past. For every 30 cars I bought last year on back for say 10 years, i now buy 1. To be honest, I have more fun modding and mailing cars out to races. The HW's Discord helped push me out of collecting too, when prices started going nuts I said both are a sign...

  • @michaeljohnson7469

I think the hobby is deteriorated due to so many newer collectors that go out and find only the stuff that sells for big money on E bay. Also due to so many out there that have friends that work in the store to get in and score all the good stuff. I have a job and don't spend all day chasing and moping up everything just so I can sell it.
I have a real squarebody chev thats blue and white but you think I can find any of those out there ? Not in the store.
Thats whats killing the hobby. Greed and no inventory.
Best of luck out there. Love your Chanel

I agree with everything you said. I collected hardcore in the 90s but pretty much stopped in the early 2000s because Mattel was throwing out so many premium type cars and became too hard to compete with all the collectors. I used to buy every car any every variation, every product that had Hot Wheels on it. I recently got back into collecting and it’s expensive. I only collect certain cars and castings. I don’t worry about completing sets when cars are $7 each. I’m not trying to complain, just letting Mattel and the other manufacturers know they aren’t selling as many cars because I can’t afford them 🤷🏼‍♂️

You got that right! I learned a long time ago and like all collectors I get caught up in the "hunt", we get bent on keeping up with the trends...I fall for it everytime! We can't/shouldn't collect everything that our fancy favors. Half of my collection is full of "hoard pieces", meaning I have a few castings that I collect (VW, Porsche, 67-69 Camaros, Woody Wagons) but these are not those. The prices are driven by us. I'm certainly not a whale that can afford everything coming out but I'm guilty for buying cars I can't eat so to speak. I'm in the dispose/sell mode now. I want to get back to enjoying my hobby and collection.👊❤

I 100% agree with you. Mattel seems to be going the 24k route. Mattel is not alone in forgetting their core base but for me the 1/43 introduced and their nose bleed pricing on dolled up mainline stuff posing as premiums has forced me to rethink the hobby. The turning point for me was the RLC stuff, the 1/18 Candy Striper reveals the company’s mindset. Even though it was a crowdfunding failure the company now knows the size of the base that will spend ten times over the usual RLC purchase. This will permeate throughout their entire product line. The upside is competition still exists.

Long story short, I stopped buying the Team Transport because of price! not sure what state you are but here in CA those things now cost very close to $20 out the door, no matter where you buy them. And then these new Hot Wheels 1:43 scale, $25 each?! give me a break. I am now very, very, very selective with what I buy when it comes to new diecasts. There are better options out there, M2, Jada and Majorette, you get more for your money with these brands. I also buy more now at flea markets and hobby stores... thanks for the video.

I don’t think the price is the problem, the problem is what people can get from them, scalping has increased in ways that in a way make this rant seem like nothing. I would rather pay the $6 or $7 for that Maxima than double for it on the secondary. I have gone to stores looking for those F&F cars and never find them. Just recently bought the car culture set #54 and #55 from a local Smyths toy shop, but didn't bother with the other one in that set. They are getting a bit expensive. I'm finding that I'm getting quite picky now. I also recently sold well over 200 Hotwheels strangley enough as I got bored with them. It was uncanny to hear you say you were getting bored with Hotwheels recently. I've been feeling the same for a while now. Don't get me wrong I won't stop buying Diecast just not so much Hotwheels unless I really like it. I can mind one year I collected every matchbox model in the series. Then later I ended up selling them. I like to keep the older Matchbox and Superfast , also Corgi/ Corgi juniors plus other manufacturers. I have a toyfair on the 15th of this month and looking forward to it. I've got a great dealer in diecast that gives me good prices, I'll be picking up another 6 Matchbox to add to the collection. Great video, also the lighting is great.

Yeah agreed, as a collector. I pulled my membership with their outrageous price points on their collectables and I've also noticed that they have stopped putting out cars with rubber tires in Walmart, toys R' us as well. Not to mention their just putting out the same cars with different colour schemes. Boring to be completely honest.

HW are involved in too many sunsets, The Mandolorian, Super Mario, Off Road Rd, Movie Sets. No one wants or buys any of that stuff. Even there Car Culture and Team Transport Series always have one dog set out of the three they release per series. These drive up the price of all the other cars people want. I have moved away from mainlines except for a few, mostly Japanese and a few select other ones. Trying to sell all my others and use that money to buy better 1/64 , 1/32 and 1/48 scale as well as M2, Greenlight and other makers. Yes the monies more, but the quality is way batter

I stoped buying basics and im about to stop rlc. The only cars that have a collectors “value” are convention cars cause there is not 30000 of them like the modern rlc

History repeats itself. When TH 1st came out it was 10k, then 25k then ??? and then the premium arrived in 100% hot wheels, hall of fame etc…now it’s mostly all worthless the supers arrived and premium a few years after and now only 2-4 supers a year are worth anything and the rest are $25 -$35 and premiums having chase models makes the set worthless and they make so much of everything, nothing is rare. It’s all worthless junk

Fads are expensive. I started collecting nicer cars like Mini Gts and up. No rat race, not a ton of scalpers. I feel great ignoring Hot Wheels. I will buy vintage, but that’s about it. Hot Wheels except for RLC are toys. M2 has serious QC problems, be ‼️ alert

Really? Those are expensive? Try collecting the Mini GT and Inno64 stuff (among others). $6.50 for a lower grade Hot Wheels is nothing.

That is what I am talking about you get what you pay for . This new stuff is junk for the price. I do not mind paying up for cars mini GT and others I will be paying Pennie’s on the dollar for that stuff . Try and collect redline hotwheels that is where my money goes. That is a ininvestment. But collect what you like and it is never about the money it is a hobby and stay tru to the game . Stay EZ 😎

Kids don't play with toys anymore! Especially boys they play video games instead so Hot Wheels and matchbox are actually adults that buy them! That's why the cheap Hot Wheels for a buck and matchbox for a buck or more for little kids than adults!

I use to buy series ,not any more ,too expensive, to big the blisters, remember the first series of the Blvd, nice paint job rubber tires ,small blisters etc . For $3 now we pay for the same $6.50 ,JL $7 and $8.99 , don't forget Hobby Lobby double the price of everything. From buying premiums and regular about 20 or 30 car per month sometimes more ,now I spend no more than $10 a week and what I like most .

I only buy cars that I like, whatever brand. Got to say the majority of HW’s are cheap junk now. With the odd exception. They are playing the collectors and screwing the little kids that just want a toy car to play in the dirt with!! The whole diecast industry needs to take a look at itself and start putting Joe Public first!! Rant over!😂😂. 🚗🚕🚙🚓🚌🦯🚚🛻🏎️🚑🚛🚜🚎
