Background: Tom Scott arranged the horns for Aja and a few track off Gaucho. He also played various iconic horn parts such as the sax solo on Black Cow, the Lyricon motif in Peg, the sax on Gaucho, and various other horn parts throughout Aja and Gaucho.🎷
Great interview love the music could listen for hours
Any uncontrollable die hard Dan Fan knows the name Tom Scott
Yep…Mike Brecker played tenor on gaucho, fyi
The Sax solo on Black Cow is one of my favorite moments in music
Would you care to explain?
This is the first Donald Fagan interview where it seemed he was really enjoying it. As a Dan fan I really enjoyed it. Thanks Tom!

I guess you could say they're having jazz and conversation!
And that Chevy Chase and Libby Titus can each say to the other that “We used to play when we were three…”
Tom, I just came across this. You allowed me to go backstage with you at the Bottom Line on my 20th birthday. I was doing college PR for your record company. We spoke a lot about Don, Walter and SD as they are my favorites. You probably were about to record Gaucho as Aja was a year old. We shared a cigarette and spoke about your background and music. You were (and are) the Nicest music star that I've ever met! When Richard Tee and Stuff came in, I knew it was time for me to go, but the memories still stay with me. BTW- flash forward two years, I'm DJing in a Miami club and had the great pleasure to meet Rick Derringer. He spoke very well about you and too was the greatest rock star that I ever met. He did talk about the exact nuances that every musician who comes in to work with SD has to go through.
The first job I ever had as a concert lighting designer was an international tour with Tom Scott in 1979.... I think ?.
We had such a great band on that tour,Vinnie Colaiuta Richard Tee, Carlos Rios and so many others.
Fast forward to 2000, after lighting many different acts all over the world I landed the Steely Dan gig.
I guess I passed the audition cuz I lasted 17 years with them.
Two of the most important people in my career right here folks...What a pleasure listening to this great interview.
Thanks TS,
Jp
Write a book!
Absolutely fantastic interview. It is hard to do a good session. Great job by Tom in giving Donald the space he needed.
Donald is cool beyond belief, such a talented song writer and just a master at playing and composing his music, loved steely dan and loved fagens solo stuff, won't ever be another like Donald
Tom Scott - incredible saxaphone player .
Shadows is one of my favorite songs . ( beach song ).
New York Connection ;
Tom , & Larry Carlton played on tremendous amount
Gold records !
AJA - One of the greatest , very unique Albums ..
Great Interview
🎷🙋♂️👍🏆
“Yeah, you just get some drunks in there..and record in a few takes..it’s done..”😂 Donald on producing jazz records. 😂😂
It seems to me that Donald is more comfortable being interviewed by people in his "scene" like how he's pretty bouncy and improvisational here and with that leo dude. While in the interview with that tonight show band leader he seems like he wants to jump out the window.
This is the best interview out on RUclips for Steely Dan fans. Donald's humor and intelligence needs a brilliant interviewer that really listens and has a great sense of humor (as well).
Don rarely laughs, and I appreciate that.
Too much laughter becomes an affect.
Zappa was similar in that respect.
Tom Scott’s interview voice reminds me somewhat of the late Regis Philbin.
Dear Mr. Scott. Not only are you one of my all-time favourite horn players, but now I can also add you as one of my favourite hosts! Great job interviewing the coolest hipster of all, Donald Fagen.
Very great job indeed! Interviewing isn’t easy
I do miss the back and forth between Walter and Donald!
I saw Tom Scott's LA Express opening/serving as the backing band for Joni Mitchell in support of Mitchell's Miles of Aisles LP. They were so tight that they squeaked.
Favorite part: 'We coulda been rich!' 🤣
😂
Fabulous conversation we love the Donald , the interview sounds like good friends Talking no stress , awesome conversation.💯💕☺️
Great stuff !!! so good to hear Donald enjoying himself. The man gave us all sooo much joy over the years ! Hope he can just have a portion back be fulfilled.
Estimated Prophet from the Grateful Dead’s ‘77 album Terrapin Station reminds me so much of tracks from Aja and of course as I discovered decades later the common denominator was the wonderful Tom Scott horns. Good job guys.
Fantastic. Friends interviewing friends always seems to go better. Donald as blasé, dry, and unintentionally hilarious as ever. Loads of quotable bits and insights. Sincere thanks TDV 🙏
Thanks Tom, such a relaxed and entertaining interview with Donald, bravo!
“I had a terrible resentment of authority!” Lol 😂😂
Tom, you really hit it out the park with this one! GREAT interview with two of my all-time favs. What a fun and funny love fest with a lot of new ground covered. Bravo!!!
Interview was perfect. Its amazing how much better things go when you respect each other. With all due respect to Burt B., maybe what the world needs now is just more respect.
THE best DF interview ever, truly, by the great Tom Scott sans LA Express!
I love Donald!!! He so humble, and self depricating. One of the greatest musicians of our time. Not to mention sexy!!
Why i love Donald.... great hands,voice,thin lips,attitude,hes jewish, .

Love this interview so much -these two wonderful musicians
To see an excellent musician T.S. interview another real knowledgeable and incredibly talented musician D.F. is a masterpiece....new subscriber just now.
Tom, saw you at Telliride, CO in late 70's. Your sound was as clear as that mountain air. I happened to be working down in the dusty town Montrose at the base of the hill.
Such a great interview. I think the quality of interviews with musicians is generally better when the interviewer is like, a musician too, you know.
Exactly. No yuck yuck yuck laughs from the interviewer. And you can tell Donald is relaxed and friends.
Thank you for posting this ..
that was wonderful and he sounds really good , theres greater things to come and a healing summer ahead , got to see him again i love steely
Thanks for posting, great stuff!
Great Interview, here. Dan & Fagan fan (and fan of yours since the 70's) I'll never forget the first time we we went to the Village Vanguard in 1991. It was Branford Marsalis, Tain, Kenny Kirkland, and others. Basically Leno's 1st Tonight Show band right before they got that gig. Being a drummer and sitting 3 ft from Tain's kit as they blew, and improvised on fast Bop at warp 22, for 2hrs straight, without a single break was a total mindblowing experience. Then being able to talk to tain about speed/technique afterward was magical. Being from Westchester, and growing up with all Classic Rock got me into Jazz late. But better late than never. Later on, becoming a big fan of Krantz/Carlock/Lafave in 97, (and studying Keith's confounding left hand ghost note, displaced beat virtuosity from 3ft away) and finding out in 2001 that Fagan & Becker came by the 55Bar to check him out. Then hired Keith (still hired!) shortly after, is still something I can't wrap my head around. Then Bowie hiring Donny McCaslin, Lafave, and Guliana out of the 55 later on was surreal.
A great Interview, so glad they made music to their standards without compromise.
This was a great one.
What an awesome interview I hung on to every word being a huge Dan Fan thx for posting

#1 fan, Kere.
Super-cool interview! I love how relaxed and open the two of you were with each other! Thank you!
You, sir (or m'am), are doing the Lord's work. One place on RUclips for everything I could want related to Fagen and Becker.
“Gloomy dispositions” 😂😂😂
They used to play when they were 3......
we all heard that lmao
Their perfectionism . pays off.
46:34
LORD HAVE MERCY
Just get some drunks in there 😂

Dave Palmer was on Midnight Special can see it on RUclips

Rumor has it you guys lived in my uncle Mark Traversino's building in Hollywood back in the early days. Any truth to that? Love
Great interview. When was this recorded?
October 27, 2019
@@TheDanVault Oh cool, more recent than I thought.
@@Ajaunte_he mentioned Covid which happened in 2020?…
@@Orbiter221Also the live recordings he mentioned came out in 2021, along with his mention of covid. Not at all sure how a 2019 date is stated with apparent authority. It's 2021.
To hear Donald’s impersonation of Mick Jagger go to 42:45, definitely worth hearing!
Did Walter or Donald, ever consider Jaco for any of the sessions on AJA, or Gaucho. I,ve been perplexed with this question for year,s now? Thx/ Clayton
When was this recorded?
windys going to get infusions every 3 weeks but would rather be on the service elevator do tell love you
Like Donald Fagen, I"m not fond of the "blareyness" of a trumpet's high notes.
Many trumpeters I've heard live consistently played "sour" notes when they went high, except the AMAZING Sal Marquez when he was with Zappa.
Tommy scott once viciously beat down tv composer Mikey post in a bar in west LA. Tommy is a fucking bad ass street fighter. He nearly killed Mikey post in a drunken bar fight. If it wasn’t for Bernard Purdie and chucky Rainey. Mike post would have been killed. Tom Scott was a bad ass
