Jacob, Thank you for sharing. My parents' farm is seen getting hit starting at the 3:25 mark. They have only been in the new house (tan house on the south side of the farm) since Thanksgiving. It sustained very minimal damage. The old house (white house on the west side) had a number of windows blown out on the first floor but sustained no damage to the second floor. The machine shed was ripped in half (as seen on the video). I can't believe you captured it all on video! If you would like pictures of the damage, let me know. The tornado has been preliminary classified as an EF-1 with top wind speeds of 100mph. It traveled for 20.5 miles and was a 1/4 mile wide.
Hi Shelli; Id enjoy seeing some of the photos. I did think about stopping but saw that the houses were overall intact, and there were a lot of emergency vehicles in the area that were responding to damage. Glad to hear everyone was safe! jdickey2@Illinois.edu
LOL. There I am at 5:37 getting munched by the ghost train and trying to get under those powerlines. that was a great day and shortly before I met you, Jacob.
Excellent video and some great lessons here. First and foremost, a calm and factual report to the NWS or law enforcement, (2) no commentary or profanity e.g. let the video speak for itself and (3) almost wholly great video. I'm always amazed what's happening inside a multi-vortex tornado with breakdowns, occluding spin-ups, reformation etc. The overall absence of long lasting condensation begs the question of what proximity Td's were that day? I'm going to go back and look at the SPC MD's and surface analysis data. Your chase does show the pitfalls and hazards of solo chasing but being a practitioner of same, I can only offer a "well done" as I know how difficult it can be AND still being able to capture the rewards. Of course, I'd much rather prefer to have a partner to handle the logistics, radar, navigation at al. Keep up the great example you are offering to our fascinating hobby. We need more of "you" out there today.
Pretty amazing you were able to capture the destruction of the tornado as it was happening. Don't get to see that a lot. Nice job and condolences to those who lost things in this ominous looking devil tornado
2DSTORMS I still got 3 national networks and a bunch of local stations and websites, so I'm not too upset. You bet I'm looking in the future at joining one of them, though!
Impressive. I am glad you recorded the reporting of the tornado. You didn't use the word wedge or huge. You didn't shout and scream all the way through the video. Nice job of capturing what nature did in Iowa.
Great video and thanks for posting! I pray for everyone out there and hope the weather calms down soon! by the way, you are a celebrity :) I saw your video on the local news, so much for NOT FOR BROADCAST? a buddy of mine who works for FCC was talking about the broadcast statements and I guess if posted in public 'Internet' they are fair game ? if so, that just means you need to sell your shots immediately after filming IMO. thanks for posting, really clear video, looks very professional!
I did license it and sold it to a few stations for broadcasting. I'm working to find a broker now for full time since apparently everyone thinks this is fascinating lol
Jacob Dickey nice clean pic..good balance with light ratio...and talk about being in position...that was a very good video...rare to see good quality without all the telling and stuff..and kudo's for also reporting it to the authorities.
Jacob Dickey, one more kudos. Thank you for not talking or yelling like a freaking maniac. I love to see Reed Timmers work but he screams like a soccer parent when he spots just a low hanging cloud. You were quiet throughout the event and allowed the event to play out for all of us to see without hearing about it.
Sage Sheahan My parent's house is only a block or two South of the high school. (So about 100-200 yards.) It was terrifying. But. There were no injuries. :)
at the 220 mark when you see all of that loose stuff go straight up. that is when the roof came off the local high school. There were 100 people inside attending a awards ceremony at the time. forewarning got everybody into the basement. No hospitalizations reported in town. I am sure lots of people will have cuts and scrapes while picking up sharp things off the ground.
from the video it looks like the new house survived to be repaired. the house that got the worse damage was the old house that they were going to tear down. The machine shed was not planned on for demolition.
Have you sold this yet? If not you need to contact a weather broker and get paid for video like this like I do. This might have made you $500 or more!!
WICKED , I realize that telephoto or zoom can make something look very close but even with that in mind , and especially with a multi-vortex you appear to get a bit close a couple of times . Be careful and don't get greedy or let the adrenaline junkie take over !!!

From one storm spotter to another, be safe out there, thanks for doing what you do, and great video!
One of the best videos of the year IMO!!
Great video. I like these types where the pictures do the only talking. Some of the other ones can get annoying.
Gets freaky when the ghost train is right in front of you! Nice chase video!!!

Thank you for helping to keep Iowans safe!
Amazing footage!
Amazing video. I am a stringer with Live Storms Media and that is one great video, epsecially the closeups as it enters town.
Do you enjoy being with LSM?
Jacob Dickey Have been with LSM since January 2014 and have not had any problems.
I licensed the video with storyful and have sent an email to Brett to see about becoming a LSM partner.
This video would have made you a bunch of money if you were with LSM, Severe Studios or KDR Media.
