Definitely. I saw one of the doctors that Gypsy saw myself for my own condition, and I never understood why he knew something was wrong and never said a word except to make a note in her file. Doctors are mandated reporters. Someone should have said something.

The system let's many down in the end! Look at Jaycee Lee Dugard another child victim who yes went through a worse experience than Gypsy for sure but like Gypsy the system really let her down. It is like victims and the perps can almost be out there to be seen yet the painful situation goes on and on...
Cauas mom accuse them of something, medical negligence, children molester, made drama. A lot of them just put "According the mother, Gipsy have x-condition, even so this wasn't never confirmed by any medical test",
Dee Dee even stole one of the medications from the one of the hospitals
Being a victim of a very controlling adult that tried to declare me an incompetent adult, I do understand the desperation to be free. Her mother very likely would have killed Gypsy for the empathy of others.... "Oh this poor mother lost her very sick child". This is why Gypsy feels free in prison!!! She truly is free from this horrible situation. I don't condone the actions but I do understand them. 😢

I was starting to write a comment when I saw this, almost word for word what I was going to write. My past situation was far less potent than Gypsy's of course, but I have experienced the helplessness that comes with a controlling, gaslighting parent and I can understand why she felt she had no other choice.
@@kellfrillman4199 and think about it. At the time her mother was murdered, she had been lying to Gypsy about how old she really was. she continued lying to the public family friends and also to Gypsy about her real age.
So what was the mother's plan when Gypsy did find out the truth? The mother was already facing the situation of what she was going to do. If Gypsy found out her own real age and wanted to leave, then her mother's lie would be exposed!! The only way the mother could protect her secret from not only everybody else but also from gypsy would be to do something horrible to Gypsy. Being in a very bad abusive childhood that I mentioned before. It was a killer be killed situation and only Gypsy her mother and the Lord above would have known the truth about that situation. This was actually the best outcome for gypsy to lead any kind of life after that.
She 100% would have killed her daughter. It's any wonder she was still alive at this point, and the fact that her mother went as far as changing the date on her daughter's birth certificate supports this theory. Her mother HAD to know this charade was coming to an end. That boy has really been given too harsh a sentence, and so has Gypsy. Of COURSE Gypsy manipulated him! This was a learned behavior (Gypsy's mother) and it was ALL she knew.
I followed her case, and have seen almost everything on the case. I don’t know if there has been a mother torturing a child in this way for such along time medications, surgeries, tubes it’s surreal yet true. I don’t know how that woman was able to fool so many doctors for all these years. I don’t condone murder , but I don’t know what I would have done had I been in Gypsy’s place!
I truly believe that there were two ways out of this, if Gypsy wouldn’t of planned to kill her mother, sooner or later unfortunately her mother would of killed her.. because Gypsy was getting out of her mother’s control and was slowly gaining knowledge. I also believe her mother would of probably got away with her murder due to all the complications her mother made out she had.

As someone who has been on the other end of this spectrum. Being called a liar by my family for having healthproblems that don't show up phsycially but internally. I feel for gypsy. Im tearing up for gypsy no one deserves being gaslighted
Yes, Gypsy manipulated Nick into killing her mother. Yes, he’s on the spectrum. No, he should not be free. He is a danger to society because he has murdered someone and could in fact be manipulated to do it again. He not should be in prison though. He should be serving time in a mental hospital.

All Gypsy knows is a life of deceit and manipulation. And given Nicks mental state, I’m assuming he was easily manipulated into something he probably knew was wrong. But genuinely thought this was the only way he could help girl he loved. I wish there was another way for Gypsy and DeeDee to get the help they needed before it came to this.
DeeDee is probably a sociopath, no one could've helped her, even medication and therapy. Someone could've taken Gypsy away from her, though, and helped Gypsy.
If there ever was a miscarriage of justice, this one is it. Gypsy Rose has paid her debt more than long enough.
I agree. Same with the boy...he has a developmental disability...I believe neither one deserved prison...if anything they both needed therapy and Gypsy was tortured by her mother for too long...I felt bad for her when I saw the story for the first time.

Listen it was going to come down to either DeeDee or Gypsy. Gypsy was becoming independent which was putting a cramp in DeeDee's style, and I don't doubt for a second that DeeDee wasn't planning to kill Gypsy and blame it on one of her "illnesses". I wonder if there was life insurance on Gypsy--which would have been another financial win for DeeDee.

I don't understand why all the doctors involved with Gyspy didn't do tests for all those ailments. Treating Gyspy going on Dee Dee's words? Doesn't make sense to me. I know she said the medical records were lost in Katrina, but still run new tests then.
It’s very complicated! They moved, Medicaid does not pay for a lot of things, like tests, without the exact documentation demonstrating symptoms. Dee Dee was able to manipulate everyone! Doctors are compelled to move on and see patients in numbers, so they can lack the empowerment to slow down and think deeply and to act.
Do to their fame, everyone wanted to help Dee Dee and Gypsy and that included not questioning them! There’s so much involved in how this was able to go on!

Gypsy totally manipulated Nick. She convinced him that killing was their only way out. Nick definitely deserved more leniency.

This makes me so sad. That young man got sentenced to life in prison and he is on the autism spectrum. This just isn't right. Did the jury do research on autism before deciding guilty of 1st degree murder? Gypsy isn't on the spectrum and manipulated him to kill her mom; However, I don't feel like she should've gotten prison time. Her boyfriend thought he was protecting his girlfriend. Just so unfair.
I don't believe he would murder again, or allow himself to be a pawn for someone else. But I imagine there are other considerations that we probably don't and will never know. Does seem excessive though.

I have to cringe when they say Dee Dee 'suffered' from Munchausen By Proxy. She may have had the disorder, but Gypsy Rose was obviously the one who suffered. She has already paid her debt, in my opinion.

It’s sad that she feels more free in a prison vs being outside. Hopefully while she’s there she can learn some life skills. Maybe she’ll function better once she gets out. Although, I feel as though she would probably need help for the duration.

How did this girl have many unnecessary medical procedures, false diagnoses and unreqired medications prescribed without raising any red flags? Didn't one doctor, nurse or family/friend question the validity of the mothers claims of serious illnesses?

Even though it was extreme, I understand why she felt this was her way out. She had no interaction with anyone without her mom present, her mom had papers drawn up to make people believe she had no idea what she was talking about. She didn't have her father because Dee Dee kept her from him too. She had no other way. Plus, much longer on all those meds, and she might have been killed herself. I do feel bad for Nick, too, though.

I am glad to see so many comments about NG being manipulated by GRB. When I first followed this story, most people were only sympathetic to GRB. I got cursed out a lot for pointing on that NG was highly vulnerable to manipulation and she took advantage of that. Neither are innocent but one is much more mentally competent than the other, but the mentally incompetent one got a lot more time than the other just because GR was a sympathetic female. Such equality, huh?

Type may have asked him to do it, but it doesn’t seem like he needed much convincing and even seemed excited at times over the proposition.
Obviously, Gypsy wasn’t innocent, but I think there is a difference between a girl desperate to escape an abuser, who’s other none violent attempts have failed and was kept drugged. Munchausen Syndrome by proxy. The mother was abusive and should be released. She may not be able to live independently, but she shouldn’t be in prison. The boyfriend was trying to help his girlfriend, although he didn’t have cause. If he was autistic, that should have been considered. Both: not guilty by reason of insanity.

I think jury saw more, then we know. And I agree, ether 10 years for both of them or she gets life in prison and him getting 10 years or mental treatment. The first time Gypsy ran away her mum convinced a lawyer to write up papers stating that she was mentally incapable of looking after herself. She told Gypsy that if she ran away again she would show the police the papers and they will bring her right back and no one would believe her. Her mother also changed her birth records to make her legally younger than she actually was
The doctors needed to report to authorities what was happening to Gypsy as a young girl. Gypsy should NOT have been given operations and medications that she didn’t need. The doctors could of stood up for her and saved her from her mother as a young girl.
The hbo documentary acknowledges that the mother fixed it so that the system would fail her. The justice system failed her in this sense because her mother was killed but Gypsy was always the victim

This should also be a question into healthcare. There should be a nation wide system of every documented person in the country who ever visited a doctor, and graph their history and diagnosis' ever made. Taking a person's word on their history is obviously an answer that can be manipulated.

I really feel sorry for Gypsy she needs a lot of help cuz she knows nothing about what it’s like to take care of herself. I also think that nick really needs help. I don’t think either belong in jail. I would say a lot of different types of professional help for many many years.
@Ryan Smith That's a good point, and to some extent true, but what happened to that girl here is unimaginable. From the age of 8, she was forced to lie. She consumed many different medications that would have made her physically and mentally sick, and even underwent surgery. Her lying and deception was anything but voluntary, and she had no say whatsoever in her own life.

In the end I am going with Gypsy as the most tragic figure of all of this. I will never say that it is justified that her mom was killed, but her mom in a way set up her downfall. Actions, behavior, decisions have consequences! Dee Dee using her daughter as some twisted prop to finance her life in so many ways and keeping her from a normal life really to me is pretty twisted! It is not up there with some adults taking away the lives of children by keeping them a prisoner of sorts, put still is really nasty in many ways! Who knows where else this maybe happening and what tragic outcome it will create!
How in the world are thwse drs not charged in this and why would they not run test on this little girl I mean what could these Drs possibly know without test in her or what kind of meds she needed. 1). Dee Dee's mother had a similar personality according to Dee Dee's father.. 2). Dee Dee got pregnant by a very young Rod when she was much older. She wanted a child to do this to. 3). Everything went as far as it did because of the way that people habitually look in the other direction. This is a cultural disease.

Anyways, I agree with some posts of why these so-called specialists haven't faced malpractice charges and that probably eventually the "mother" would have collected $ on her "mysterious" death from one of her "illnesses". Im sorry but this is so twisted the mother DeeDee was an out an out nutter who made a fortune doing what she was doing and also gratifying herself also. Gypsy obviously not the full ticket finds out that she can do what she likes if her mum aint about. So poor Nick enters the story another guy with challenges and falls head over heals in love. The worst thing happens Gypsy gets Nick to kill her mum she learned how to be devious and sets it up and what do the juries do set her free and put Nick away. Just wrong and they should have been tried together thats simple.
They both should be free the mother caused what happened to by wanting to control her and in a terrible way who could do that to their own kids , but she is not the first and no doubt she won’t be the last. But I wish her all the best and hope she has a happy life when she gets out . ❤️❤️❤️

Being tortured for so long how on earth can that poor girl have a correct train of thought of how to resolve or fix her problems in life. She obviously would believe that her mother had complete control of her life. Lord only knows what words her mother confused her mind with for years. Poor girl never really got to be happy in her life. First controlled by her mother and now controlled by the system.

This is so very complicated. It seems to me that each person had the deck stacked against them. (Listen to Dee Dee's relationship with HER mother.) Although I don't condone the murder as ecape, I get it. Ultimately, it would have been her or her mother. I think that the two young people are on similar mental/emotional levels [definite emotional immaturity of Gypsy's part]. Allegedly, she was homeschooled but what her cognitive abilities due to constant constant testing, surgeries, meds etc etc? As far as Nick goes, autism does not make one a murderer. Each person wanted/needed deep love and approval but completely, wrongly went about it the illegal way. She's got a l-o-n-g road ahead as far as stability, intense therapy (especially in identifying what real love and trust is) and how to live in the world successfully.

Her mother had a prescription pad she stole from Dr.s office to get tons of medications. Then she could take bottles to show a new Dr… I don’t understand how her mom had Dr.s do surgeries she didn’t need. So sad. My son is high functioning autistic teen n I have 11yr old autistic grandson. They do not lie as hard as people may think but each is different. So he told truth but he got first degree and she got second degree. She got 10yrs n he got life. It should be equal. Granted he stabbed her was only thing different. She let him in,gives gloves, hides in bathroom. She knew what she wanted n twisted his mental illness as well as hers. I don’t think she was forced if you watch her video she takes at hotel right after. She lied to her mother.The mom defrauded millions of dollars n thousands of people s donations.
I feel so bad for her ,she had no choice and there's proof ,for years her mother convinced doctors she was sick professional men ,so she could've got her committed ,with officials believing her .I dont blame her.
