- Give Us a Clue is a British televised game show version of charades which was broadcast on ITV from 1979 to 1992. The original host was Michael Aspel from 1979 to 1984, followed by Michael Parkinson from 1984 to 1992. The show featured two teams, one captained by Lionel Blair and the other by Una Stubbs. Later versions of the programme had Liza Goddard as captain of the women's team.
Originally, the teams consisted of the captain, two celebrities and one member of the public. The public participation was dropped and another celebrity was added in their place. On one infamous edition of the programme, the male member of the public was handed the title he had to mime on a card by host Michael Aspel, but rather than read the mime, he read the wrong side of the card on which his name was printed. He thus mimed his name to his teammates. Lionel Blair later wrote this incident led to the dropping of the public participants.

R.I.P Stubs I'll shall remember this show as long as i shell live even play this at school home and street.
Compared to kids today got lot more what we had and still have to cause trouble to others and being bored
Fun show so many stars but will miss Lionel Blair most
The good old days. RIP Lionel Blair
Hinge and Bracket my word that takes me back.
Should've had Dame Edna in the team as well with Danny La Ru as captain, that would've made the 'girls' team complete!!
@@thecelticdruid.6681 Very harsh but true. I didn't even realize Hinge and Bracket were on the wrong team.
I am listening to Hinge and Bracket BBC radio series Random Jottings of Hinge and Bracket. I forgot how good it was, beautifully scripted and acted with an incredible supporting cast.
@@thecelticdruid.6681 I get what are saying but the genius of Hinge and Bracket was that they were never seen out of character (old theatrical women) even in interviews.
@@jahno7154 While we are at it, be glad the men didnt get Boys in the Band. I can say that.
I would love to see more full episodes of give us a clue what a amazing show who ever came up with the concept is a genius hope we can have more full shows very very soon
"who ever came up with the concept is a genius" it's charades...
It’d probably be hosted by an overexposed celeb now, like Phil Schofield or Ant & Dec, or an irritating one like Keith Lemon!
Lisa out of Skippy was in it a lot too. Would watch it if it returned.
There are some editions hosted by Michael Aspel that are now on RUclips.
If you can find 'brozotes' channel. He has downloaded a lot of the episodes. Starting from the early ones with Michael Aspel and Una Stubbs up.
Oh, that glorious Liza smile; warming, embracing, life-enhancing. This programme makes my day every time I see it.
Rip lionel a great show from my childhood
Basically, Good old British Charades! But Rada style😂😍
Who can ever forget the frustration on Lionel Blair's face at not being allowed the use of his mouth to finish off Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Do you remember when they had Nevil Shute on?
Giggity
Im American and saw this video after one with Humphrey Lyttleton joking about Lionel Blair for years.
RIP Michael Parkinson, one of the greatest TV presenters in Britain
Such a joy to see Lionel using his hands to finish off the Alchemist in less than ten seconds!
Is that you Humph?!
You remind me when I was 14.
I used to watch it every Friday on Saudi television Channel 2
How 80s is this show
My Dad used to think Hinge and Bracket were really women! " Not the smartest " Lol
I did too for a while lol. They were absolutely amazing comedians, highly underrated! I used to watch their very own show! Both were quick witted, talented writers and geniuses of comedy. They should have had some award and acknowledgement for their contribution to the arts!!
RIP Lionel
All those STARS! All this was way before, "Whose line is it anyway ?"
this is charades dear, it's nothing to do with improvisation, or even fake improvisation
@@iansmith8263 yes, i put charades in another comment😉
only came here for lionel but enjoyed it
Lisa Goddard seems to have been on this more than Una Stubbs
That sounds about right.
Memories...
That's the most fun i've had in 23 minutes; well, that's what I said to Lisa Goddard when I climbed out of bed
hang on, hang on, hang on... hinge and bracket don't count being on the ladies (!) team!!!!
Only kidding of course..... :) :) :)
I think it's 1987.
R.I.P George Logan, aka Dr Evadne Hinge.
Penny Bennett after THAT perm!
wasnt the original opening theme tune to this show similar to grangehill ?
Rab carn Hello. Long time comment, but YT is timeless.
Yes. The theme commonly associated with Grange Hill was also used for Give Us A Clue early on.
I remember seeing Hinge and Bracket on Give us a Clue and I had no idea they were men dressed up, they were so convincing, but I was only 8 at the time
Lovely Hinge and Bracket.
Lionel and Lenny obviously hate each other! 😂
Who was the ladies in the team as can recognise there faces but can't think what they were in if anyone knows?
Hinge & Brackett (they were men dressed as ladies but hugely popular in the 80's!) and Prunella Gee
"Sweet F.A" 😆😆
The fashion here is interesting seeing the 70's clashing with the new 80's shoulder pads and bright colours versus the tight trousers of the 70's hahaha
and the 20s!
Even in the mid 70's wearing trousers THAT tight should've been illegal IMO!
The 70s? This was in 1987...
@@peterhigginsson9875 was it!? Dammit I'm old 😫
@@Tambo74 the bbc roman numerals at the end credit tells the year...
Who’s the bloke in the titles at 0m 16s?
Looks like Bernard Breslaw.
I think it's Anton Rogers.
@@martinbrice4365 Yes,it is Bernard Bresslaw
Were these common phrases in the 80s? I've no idea what half of these sentences they're miming are. I understand now why I used to argue with my Mum when I was a kid to turn it over.
They were all Songs, Plays or Films etc.
As a ten year old I viewed Hinge and Bracket as two men that paraded as woman. Nothing sexual or sinister, showing what wonderful artistes they were.
Brush strokes episode 1
Glinner is upset........
It was you are correct
Wowser, there's some delicious crumpet on the girls team tonight! 😋
I wonder if Lionel and Leonard Cohen are related.
need the rules
Possibly the worse TV intro ever.
And yet I can still recite it
6:40 they spelled like wrong (I know what a pedant)
whoa, whoa, whoa! hang on, hang on! Hinge & Bracket on the ladies team..? Trades Descriptions act please...!!!! *wink *wink :)
You know the old retort to that, I’m sure....”I know one of them’s a bloke, but which one?”
People actually thought this was entertainment, they were so easily pleased in those days.
Though better than 95% of the crap that's on today including all the reality shite
