Making is TOTALLY a form of healing. When my mom died a year and a half ago all I wanted to do was watch jimmy Diresta videos and go out in the garage and try to learn the techniques I saw jimmy do. Making things totally helped me through my grief, it also helped my house look more awesome
I search and try to find every video that I can featuring Nick Offerman. I am a self taught wood worker and try to gain every ounce of knowledge that I can from him. He is an inspiration for me to keep making the things that I do. Thanks Nick!! love your work. Looking forward to reading your new book.
Nick's message is very inspirational. I typically Make because others need something. Sometimes I get to make for the pure whimsy of getting to make something. Almost always I enjoy the process of doing as much as the accomplishment of having made something.
After an injury that drove me into an early retirement, I knew I had to do SOMETHING to avoid going crazy. Or dying. I had always had an interest in woodworking. I dove into that, and now you can find me in my ever-expanding woodworking shop. Making. Anything that strikes my fancy.
Thank you for the video Mr. Offerman. The mental health and happiness that you described in your video is exactly why I have a woodshop in my basement.
I'd love to have a day in his shop with him... Not only would I learn a ton, I'd have nothing buy fun. I am learning to make because it relaxes me from a stressful day and hopefully I make people at least chuckle once or twice during my projects as well.
I make whatever strikes me at the moment in my wood shop to deal with a stressful job. I can close the laptop and put away the crap I have to deal with every day and get out the pecil, paper, ruler, and protractor and draw out a plan. No, I don't use sketchup. I'm old school. My shop time allows me to focus on one single thing, and have no distractions while cutting wood. It's my zen. It allows me to continue in my career.Nick's got the goofiest laugh ever!
We got married and needed stuff, we had kids and needed more stuff, then grandchildren came along and required stuff but now on my own again , the workshop with all its memories keeps me occupied till I've passed my sell by date. Well done Nick for your words of wisdom
I have visites Infosys campus in Mysore a few years back. It was amazing to experience dedicated people making a change in society. I'm glad Infosys foundation supporting same spirit in other countries. And wonderful to see Nick Offerman sharing his "making"-philosopy. 👍
I make because I spend 30 years working to repair, fix, and supporting people as a manager. I had an urge to create vs fixing something. I got into woodworking. I have rarely built more than two of the same thing. I explored building jewelry boxes to wood stripped kayaks.. I guess the next thing is wood lathe or welding, who knows.......
Well I started making stuff out of wood because I wanted to give a nice rustic farmhouse table for my mom as a gift and I couldn't find anything like what I had in mind anywhere. I fell in love with wood and metal as a materials and continued the journey to chairs, few similar tables for friends, reading throne (literally), and couple more projects. I make because I love making people around me happy. #WhyIMake
mostly I make because I need something, then I learn something. many times while I'm making I think of the ancient ones and that we are standing on their shoulders. my god, they were giants!
I make because I enjoy learning new things and with quilting specifically because I can never finish learning and it combats the ideas of what's an "appropriate" craft for men. I taught my girlfriend how to use a sewing machine and make or enhance her own clothes and don't feel one ounce less of a man
Ya know I get that too. I work with engineered wood for power transformers , and every once in a while I "make " some thing and everyone says the same thing " how do you know how to do that ? " and with the same response " how do you not??"
I make websites and apps because it's something people think is hard but for me is a fun challenge and lets me be creative and make things people will use.
I make lip balm, soap and skin lotion because I can make it better for less money than commercially available products. I make knives because I am a knife nut and a retired woodworker. Then I make sheaths for the knives. I also carve spoons out of green white ash. All the ash trees here on the east coast are being killed off by the emerald green ash borer. I also turn exotic wood walking canes that can be used as an attitude adjuster.
i make stuff because it makes me feel accomplished as well a time well spend on something use full and to get a reset mind. Jesus gave use skills and imagination, let us use it. true words Nick!!
Nick Offerman, you're a total bad-ass and thank you for the inspiration. facebook.com/rockinboxes2016/ I've been trying to become a modestly better woodworker for years and everything Nick says has helped me to do so. I make keepsake boxes from exotic species. It's so easy to get started...it's one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make yourself feel better and to make others days a little brighter with a thoughtful creation. Thanks Nick
You are a funny goofball. I make all kinds of things , no attention span. You are right , sometimes you have to force yourself and fight the urge to crawl in a hole. Hooya thanks for the video. Dee
Like the passion but who is Nick ?, I enjoy these videos & they seem very popular but I'm a simple Aussie & if you can advise me to whom this gentleman is I'll be appreciative of his popularity, cheers then 👍
Hi Sumo's Projects - Nick is a popular actor and comedian whose passion is woodworking. You can read more about him here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Offerman
Why is being a maker or the maker movement all of a sudden so popular now? Is it because so many people have gone to college instead of trades and have forgotten how to install doorknob? People have been making things for thousands of years but now all the sudden it's cool?
Well yeah, I lot more people are college educated but they still miss the connection to something real, so it's more of a need that's being fulfilled with this movement...

I Make so I can Learn.
I Learn so I can Teach.
I Teach so others can Make.

That bandsaw though!! Thanks for this, helps to reaffirm my recent leap from 9-5 to making knives full time at home. Make on!
That's wisdom I needed right now.
Someone should make a 10 hour-long video of this cat giggling.
I love his message and also his laugh. What a great human :)
After an injury that drove me into an early retirement, I knew I had to do SOMETHING to avoid going crazy. Or dying.
I had always had an interest in woodworking. I dove into that, and now you can find me in my ever-expanding woodworking shop. Making. Anything that strikes my fancy.

You always hit the nail on the head. Thanks for the video Nick!

Love that laugh!
That laugh is better then a muppet laughing.
I make because my tools and materials respond to pure logic, unlike a lot of people I know.

Just a good guy, what else can you say.
I make websites and apps because it's something people think is hard but for me is a fun challenge and lets me be creative and make things people will use.
Cooking spoon.... back in the day that's a whipping spoon.
I make because it feels good to make others feel good. Nick, I love the little bit of your shop you can see.
I make because god dammit thats what i do!
Why I make....I make to sell stuff, so I can buy more tools, so I can make more stuff. It seems to be a vicious cycle. I love making stuff
I make because eliminating waste is essential to the digestive process.
I make lip balm, soap and skin lotion because I can make it better for less money than commercially available products. I make knives because I am a knife nut and a retired woodworker. I make things because there is divinity in transforming an idea, an intangible, into something real.
I make because I'm to damn cheep for most goods and services.

Infosys Foundation USA thank you heaps for clarifying that, I thought he was someone like that, I love his style & humour, very entertaining mate 👍👍👍
Did he varnish that wooden spoon? How is that going to work in a cooking situation?
i make stuff sometimes
I make because I should. Why buy crap, when I can make it better!!
Festool? He's got some cash to afford that.

I make to have a distraction from reality or something like that
I make to keep my sanity
HAY NICK >>>>> HI >>>>> BEEN A MAKER OF WOOD STUFF FOR 50 + YEARS YOU HIT HIT THE THUMB ON THE NAIL IT IS THAT WHAT YOU SAID >>>>>>>>>>>> THANKS BROTHER >>>>>>>>>> A B C
Did he say "that a lot of us let lie thallow"??
fallow
Jeff de Valk Fallow.
Neat video, but the vignette was _way_ too strong and quite distracting...
I make and fix things because I find morons to be incapable of slightly succeeding at such a task. So I grew some balls and decided to do it myself.
I make stuff because I am sure the USA is collapsing soon and so when the SHTF I can be self reliant. Plus its cool.
Love Nick Offerman! And love supporting American craftsmanship! I bet Nick would love a company like Vermont Woods Studios! Check them out @ vermontwoodsstudios.com
JK Rowling made the Harry Potter books to help her deal with her parent's death.
He would have a Festool miter saw..
UncleDelicious everyone should have a Kapex. Expensive, but so very worth it.
whoever makes Nick offerman cry needs to be destroyed.
I make because just about everything you can buy is shit.
