This is an excellent video. I am a hoarder and I buy all the time. Something you said really hit me, when I realized that I will go to the art store or buy something online especially if I'm having a bad day at work or dealing with some kind of stress at home. I don't need anything. I've got TOTES filled with paints, pens, papers, you name it. I can afford it, but I'm not using what I've already bought. I like this idea. I also like the idea of doing challenges and building your own art box from the supplies you already have. I have several subscriptions to art boxes, but I think I'm going to cancel them when it's time to renew. Start using what I've got and maybe only buying for the holidays or other special occasion.

You just gave me more ideas regarding artboxes. One could do one for every month.
      E.g.
      1) Different monochrome only, whatever color you feel like that month
      2) Different medium
      3) Different color and different medium every month
      4) Limit yourself to only X amount of colors of whatever medium, pens, or
      pastel sticks etc.
      5) Use your least favorite medium you have on hand and test out its limits, give it a chance to shine and yourself to get better at something to work with what you have for when you might not have all your stuff at hand.
      6) Make a box for each person in your life that is valuable to you and create something with their favorite colors or mediums for them.
Or visit with them and take a selfie together and turn it into a drawn or painted picture.
      7) Draw a self portrait
      8) Your pet
      8) Something you have not tried before e.g. portrait, landscape, abstract
      9) Put all your single lonley art supplies in a basket and create something with them together only.
      10) Break out your cheapest of them all and use only those.
      11) Do bare bones one, no color
      Graphite or charcoal
      12) Do a mixed media with 3 of your favorite mediums.

Watching positive reviews of things I already have works wonders. Every time I tell myself, wauw you bought some good stuff, let's go use it now! Not having a lot of storage space also helps me not buy. I have some room to grow, but I'm saving the space for things that have been on my wishlist for ages. Also, for example, I have a whole bunch of ohuhu alcoholmarkers, at least 4 different sets. I'm not interested in getting any other brands. From all the reviews I've seen, mine are great for their price point and I don't need more colours and I feel like all the brands in this price point are so similar. I happy that my brain is satisfied. Coloured pencils on the other hand are so different across brands, especially the higher end brands. Not being able to afford them is the only thing stopping me. But Christmas is coming up.. Yeay 😂

Great video and a good message especially in these hard economic times. For me I wish I had created an inventory, something I now plan to do.
I’ve found my buying has naturally slowed as I have many options in all kinds of media now. And my collection has taken many years to build up. I’d always had a mental wish list and when an item was a “deal” that’s when I’d buy.
I also urge people to keep a note of prices, as I did this with commissions so I knew what my base cost was for supplies alone, it quickly adds up and before I did that I underestimated how much I’d spent or what my initial costs were.

Excellent video! I am not on a no-buy since there aren’t much art supplies here where I live. For a long time I kept delaying making a Jackson’s order. I did not know how easy or complicated importing from Jackson’s would be so I kept making excuses: when I get better, when my supplies run low, when I save money. Obviously, one does not get better overnight and supplies do last for quiet some time. But I did manage to save, yet I still kept postponing making a Jackson’s order. Then one day, I was down to my last sheet of print-making paper (I do not have access to good quality watercolour paper, so I use print-making paper - it’s not good 😂). So I decided to give Jackson’s a trial and buy some paper and paints. Unfortunately, the customs process was cumbersome and not at all positive that I decided not to order from Jackson’s again.
Whenever I find something that excites me or whenever I need to stock on supplies then I buy them. Otherwise, I just save my money until I find myself in a place with a good art store. The problem now is that I’m running low on paper again 😢.

I have done a no buy for cosmetics and was semi successful. One thing that adds to the struggle for me is ADHD and the dopamine urge. I emotionally spend and I know it's connected to my childhood trauma. There are good moments/lengths of time where I have a good handle on it and then there aren't. This year has been especially hard and I am trying to get back on track, to limit myself and not go completely ham. I just purchased some Rosa Gallery watercolors (Romantic 21 pan set from Amazon US) because Prime Delivery 🙃and I am playing with them but OOOOOF I need to slow down. I have set aside on a wish list of what gouache I want to get when I start playing with it and I am going to let myself get familiar and comfortable with watercolor in general before I start with gouache. I will say, reminding myself it's time to buy gifts for others does help me because I WANT to be able to do that. And if I spend it all on myself, as much as I want the things, it never feels good in the end. Thank you for sharing your tips :)

Can definitely relate to the adhd dopanime hit. When I started journaling I jumped down the rabbit hole so quickly and heavily, at some point I said to my husband I wish my brain would just stop, I need a break, but I just had to keep going. After three or four years of collecting supplies and venturing into the more art ie, paint side of things, I have enough to keep my going for a long while. So now I'm crocheting 😂 I cycle through my hobbies, but knowing I've spent the time researching and collecting what I enjoy helps me calm down. Now I can just go upstairs and paint or draw or I can crochet if I want to. Having my wishlist also helps to realise which things I really want and which are spur of the moment dopamine hits. Also having kids who need clothes and such helps 😂 Though going through these periodic splurges has made me realise it's alright to buy for myself and enjoy playing around with my supplies. Finding journaling and art has helped me recover from major burn out and now navigate chronic illness. Also knowing adhd brains go through periods of now all the things for this and then all the things for that, helps me feel less guilty, especially because I know I'll get back to the first thing eventually. 😊

I think this is a very important video.
People forget that a paint box or whatever art supply it is, is no less proffessional in quality just because it was used once or twice or 7 times etc. The quality is there through the last speck of paint or pencils. 2.
They will still produce the same quality of art if you apply yourself to it.
    3. The proffessional art supplies that most everyone here bought want to be used and loved...that's what they were meant to be used for.
Don't treat them in a neglectful way because they are not straight out of the shrink wrap.
Personnally I take pride in having things many years and only replenish as really needed.
Too many sets no matter what media, cause one to loose control and ends up being more wasteful because oil paints and markers can dry out. Some things do have a shelf life after opened. If you have too much you don"t know what you have
I am also very careful to treat my supplies carefully that means don't drop them. Don't leave them around open so they get dusty, have a designated place for them when not on use and be careful where you set them down when outside so your nice boxes don't get scratched. Dry water out of the bottom of your paint box after use so no rust happens. Art supplies are incredibly expensive for someone with average wages as society sees them as non essentials supplies.
Take care of your brushes and you will have them for years to come.
Last but not least organize your stuff and lable it, before you do go shopping for more art supplies shop at home in your supplies first.

I’ll watch watercolor and gouache hauls, but now I have a decent quantity of quality supplies and I want to spend more time painting, I don’t have the urge to watch so many hauls anymore. Great video, thank you!

What a great video and congratulations on the no-buy! I have done on in the past (2 months not buying yarn, as I am also a knitter), and that was tough! That said, i plan to have a no-buy on art supplies until the end of the year... my wish list for Christmas this year will be long 😍

I have been doing a “low buy” this fall, in prep for 2023. I have done ‘no buy’ periods when I’ve been engrossed in other hobbies. There’s always a period when I try something new, when I feel that I need ALL the pretty things. I have to reset the switch in my brain and convince myself that I do not lol. Fortunately, I do keep a budget, so I can see the numbers every month. I am thinking of joining a watercolour subscription box in 2023 (possibly) and using that for my spending. It would keep me from looking at other things and still satisfy that little “treat” each month.

@@SketchesnScrubs I had been looking at the Emma L. Craftamo subscription. They released the price this week and it changed my mind. I had a number in my head that I would not go above and it was exceeded (unless I paid for the entire year up front to get 25% off, however, paying $621 Cdn before Christmas was not in my plan). For $621, I might as well pick and choose exactly what I want… like a few of my favourite brushes (Princeton, Escoda), some Arches paper, Etchr sketchbook and a set of A Gallo paints!

I have an idea for making you get the most out of what you have.
Lets say you have a set of watercolor paints with 24 colors in it. Then paint at least 24 pictures with that set. If you have a set of 120 color pencils, create at least 120 pictures with that set and so on. Create, mix media.
See how far your supplies go with that.

I allready told the story of my Ipad, and I have to say getting the Ipad was a really good decision. Even today as I was feeling half dead I managed to do a little doodle on my Ipad. So I’m on a no buy or low buy until I pay off the Ipad. 😂 I have supplies to last me a half of a decade at least. Learning about new materials has become so easy with all the reviews and since I am still a beginner focused on learning I watch many videos which in return tempt me to try different media. I even got a set of alcohol markers, which I am terrible at 😂. But some materials like Neocolor 2 are awesome.
