  • Matt and Keith are joined this week by The Urban Motorhome himself, Darran, sharing his experience of living in a motorhome in cities and urban areas as a solo traveller.
Darran discusses the challenges and safety concerns associated with urban parking, as well as the importance of being respectful and discreet when choosing parking spots. Whilst encouraging people to consider motorhome living, Darran unpacks some crucial points on choosing a motorhome and how to approach urban parking strategically.
In the news, will there be an overnight parking ban aimed at Bristol van dwellers?
A new advisory panel are proposing a ban on parking between 1 am and 4 am on the Downs, a green area in Bristol where some van dwellers have parked for many years.
On the flip side, astonishing revenue figures have been released by Wyre Borough Council from one car park in which they have recently allowed overnight parking.
Matt and Keith discuss the reasons behind the Bristol parking ban and the potential impact on people living in their vans, as well as how other councils can learn from this Wyre Borough Council case study to provide motorhome parking areas.
This week's Q&A features the viability of diesel-converted electric motorhomes, whether all motorhome drivers will need C1 licences in future and travelling with a British vs European dog in the EU.

Great pod cast as usual :) Local councils might be reticent about 'aire' type park ups because of a perceived Romany/Gypsy/Traveller problem. I live in Cambridge quite close to an official encampment and sometimes see Traveller groups parked on green spaces or carparks that don't have barriers. The park and rides have height barriers, probably to stop the Traveller community taking advantage, but it also stops motorhomers from visiting and spending their money!

Hi guys, love the pod cast. Im a 62 year old woman with a Talbot harmony. My husband is still in full time employment and so he can't go off on jollies as much as he would like to. However I am more than happy to pack the campervan with bbq, deck chair, a good book and my Bengal cat Ludo. Never had any issues and feel completely recharged when I go home. I use pitch up, park for nite, CCC and local beauty spots. My husbands favourite saying is.... Happy wife = happy life😂.

Your husband is a wise man!!
Good on you for heading out there alone! Mrs Motorhome Matt aspires to head off alone. She has a busy working partner in me and is hesitant to do so! What advice would you give her other than ‘just do it!’?

@@MotorhomeMatt my advice would be to park close to (not too close) other people. There's safety in numbers. Also I like to have a pitch not too far from the lamp post so that I'm not completely in the dark. I store every thing away at the end of the day so no-one has an excuse to come around my pitch. I make sure all my doors are locked from the inside but I can unlock quickly and get out should I need to. I have fire extinguisher and fire blanket but to my shame, I didn't have a clue how to use either so now that I do, I feel happier to cope with any potential fire issues. Finally I think she will be surprised how many women are going away with their campervan alone and it's a nice way to meet like minded women. I have learned how to work the heating, fridge, and all the other stuff that is normally done by my husband. It's fun and I have a real sense of achievement 😀

Great podcast as always, lovely to see Darran on the podcast with his thoughts on urban parking.
Interesting question from Colin about converting existing ICE motorhomes to EV, I am hoping to speak to some EV converters soon about this topic and will of course return to the podcast with my findings. I think it will be essential to be able to convert existing legacy ICE vehicles to EV's as we move into an ever increasing electrified future, we will need to recycle, reuse, and repurpose when ever possible on our journey to Net zero.

Great Podcast as usual. Listening to Darran, one of my concerns now is this new ULEZ Zone basically the M25 and within. Where I used to live is in that area, and I hope it gets reviewed. Your thoughts please.

It could become a political pawn in the short term this year but I fear ULEZ is here to stay. In our own city of Bristol the council made £26m last year from it. I can’t see them giving that up

If they live to a code and keep the area tidy and free of crime then let them rock on.

It is obvious why women travelling alone is more talked about. Because It IS easier for men to travel alone without being vulnerable to violence (whether they fear it or not). Sure there are females who can bench press 70 kilos and knock a bear to their knees. BUT LARGELY women are weaker than men and less prone to violent acts. For sure there are some women who are very aggressive and for of course there some men who a physically weak (and many more who are more gentle and fearful of confrontation on the inside - even when they have a large and muscular body size). Nothing wrong with either.... Obviously grown women travelling are generally much more at risk of being SA'd and physically targeted than grown men travelling alone. Women are an easier target.
We have historic proof men have been harming women physically for at least a couple thousand years, but likely it has been going on since the dawn of time before written history, because - by and large - bullies target those who are weaker. Why we have to 'wonder' about it to be politically correct is insincere.
*Instead, I think it would be more productive and honest to have a discussion that men also fear being targeted by violent, immoral people and that there is nothing un-manly about that. It is sensible. There are a lot of bad people about.*

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I meet many single and married men who fear heading off in their Motorhone on their own. It’s about their confidence and belief they can. I agree with your comments and thanks again

It is stupifying to me why Britain doesn't make provisions for motorhome goers and just tax them (a reasonable amount) to keep everything efficient and tidy... Instead, Britain forces ordinary good citizens in the same box as disrespectful anti-socials and thugs. Why can't people live in a motorhome if they choose to? The way it is now: we end up with good people who are happy to contribute, but are anxious and uncertain, when they could be relaxed -OR- people who do not care what or whom they wreck and encroach on.
Charge a fee(s) like the The Canal & River Trust do for continuous cruising and make the rules fair and reasonable, like a council tax. It could be weekly/monthly for short-term people and 6 monthly/yearly for long term and full-time people. In return make spaces on disused land with waste and water facilities etc. This way ordinary citizens are contributing and are less likely to cause sanitation or social problems or upset others (reasonable-minded people anyway). In return have facilities and peace of mind.

Great words thank you! It’s still a mystery to me why as a country we have such little vision when it comes to embracing what each other wants to do and achieve especially when the impact is positive when done correctly.
Are you familiar with the FB group Campra? Do join it. Some great practical advice in there.
      Thanks for commenting

@@MotorhomeMatt Thank you, Matt 💐. I am still in the 'curious' phase - watching 1,000s of RUclips videos and making spreadsheets, because I'm such a nerd. So I don't know as much as others. My main apprehensions are this parking issue (and my safety travelling alone). I will definitely look at the Campra group.
