  • The Phalanx 20mm Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) is a defensive anti-missile and anti-air system that can fire up to 4.500 rounds per minute. The Phalanx can also be used against surface targets like small combatant ships.
In these short clips we see the Phalanx system on board several US warships firing during several exercises at sea at both air and surface targets.

It is a very impressive weapon, indeed. It's interesting to compare it to the soviet AK630 CIWS, somewhat very similar in execution.

Thought it was 4500 rpm... old ciws tech. To be fair the barrel cannot even fit that many rounds :)

I know the ak630 is a beast also... But how does the up-to-date version compare to the Phalanx? I know that the older soviet ak630 is powerful, but it lacks precision due too poor radar (not to mention extremely rudimentary manual aim...). The current Phalanx system has quite a good radar and it is a dedicated one too boot.
