@@sskoog Thats the thing, they trusted him less cause he would follow the rules rather than sticking to his heart and family. They trusted tristan more cause they knew he would break any rule and any law for his family and loved ones. Tristan was the nature, alfred was the society. Thats why a line in the end of the movie says "tristan was the rock they broke themselves against, while he only wanted to save them". Pointing out that nature is above society. Anthony hopkins was like alfred when he was a soldier but he realized that rules made by man is inferior to rules and laws of nature and God. Thats why he trusted tristan more Alfred realized that in the end and thats when peace came to family.
I never understood why Coronel Ludlow was a real jerk with Alfred just because Alfred´s aspirations were away from of Coronel´s path, Alfred was full of integrity, and always trying to be correct and do the right, and also honest, hard working and a mature and noble man.
flor de primavera sometimes doing the wrong things in life might mean doing right to others. By conventional standards, alfred did right. But by the old way, rebellion wasnt considered wrong. Its who is looking through the glass.
Alfred and Samuel represented what LudLow hated and tried to get away from. Conformists with idealistic and naive ideologies. Thinking the government was good and that it's glorious to fight as a soldier without truly realizing the cost of war. Ludlow believed in fighting to protect oneself, not to unnecessarily label a group an enemy so you can do your corrupt bidding. Alfred and Samuel were soldiers blindly fighting, and more times it was for corrupt people. Ludlow tried to teach his sons, even moving far away from the madness, but they still turned out idealistic. Alfred got it in the end though(killing the one man who was going to kill his father and brother). They are not your friends. They are untrustworthy. Life isn't the fairytale of the good guys winning. It's all corruption and those who'll get eaten up. Tristan, from his birth on(almost killing his mother during delivery) up til this death was a rebel. Tristan, is what he raised his kids to be. Then again, people simply take to people. Any parent knows, from a child is young who their favorite is on personality. Now, you can have your favorite but shouldn't play favorites. Tristan and Alfreds rivalry, which shattered the family, had just as much to do with Ludlows favortism as it did Susannah...if not more. It started the feeling that he'd never win over Tristan no matter how hard he tried. Susannah just came along and *cemented* it.
+flor de primavera, Colonel Ludlow was a cavalry officer, and he had seen the underhanded tactics that the American government had used to control, massacre, and control the Indian people. He determined, rightly so, that the United States Congress and the various U.S. agencies had enriched themselves on the money and lands that were supposedly given to the Indian people in the various Indian treaties. He had seen that the government underhandedness started in those who pushed and bribed the law-making bodies into the illegal activities, and the riches and power that went down the various chains-of-command. He was sick that Alfred had chosen to get involved in that mess even though Alfred apparently tried to stand apart from the crime and corruption.
You can clearly see a tear on colonel Ludlows cheek when he approaches, as he would knew, that he's going to die next to his son with just two bullets against 3 enemys. Now that is EPIC!
TheTunzl I've always wondered about that. IMO, the Colenel finally has insight into Tristans' state of mind, and the burden he has been carrying with him all these years, and he is tearing because he is now very aware of tragedy that is his son and the blame he has put on himself. After that confession he once again has to see his favorite son leave home.
They were loyal to the end and that’s what saved them all. Maybe not those close to them and maybe not even some of their own family. But those 3 held it together through thick and thin
I love this scene! The “Yeah!”, of the Colonel was like: I am not stuttering mfer. Then when he embraces Alfred; the expression of Alfred and the face of the Colonel says it all! Beautiful acting and great directing!

I cry everytime I see this scene. I'm crying now.
"Yooou...aaare.....not damned..Tristan! I won't allow that! YOU'RE NOTTA DAMNED!!"
Anthony is one of the powerful and influential actors in cinematic history. And i loved how they filmed it when that guy was about to shoot them and Alfred shot him out of the blue.
This movie told me you can’t be strong or anything without family love
Great movie ! , the best ending I've ever seen, everything here is about love, brotherhood, courage, streght and honour, look at the eyes of the characters: they say everything !!. No doubt, an exceptional performance of all actors, specially Anthony Hopkins.
Très beau film que j'ai vu avec de grands acteurs. Superbe histoire...Moi j'ai adoré ce film...🙏💯👍👌🫶📽🌈🌏🕊🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The video description gave me a good laugh.
Col. Ludlow is like my father: all protecting, love defying logic, love trumps all dad.
..such a powerful movie..greatest actors and a story for my heart..love..
I like to believe Alfred had him covered the whole time and had they taken Tristan to the woods he would’ve saved him there to
Just when he thought he was alone, his brother steps out from the shadows. Magic. I have a brother just like Aiden Quinn. 👍
omg LOL the description here has to be the funniest i've ever read!
Tears in my eyes. Beautiful.
FAMILY stays together! Epic!
Eltomoff, your description of this fine clip of Cinema is like Menu written in exquisite Poetry added to a devine desert served at just the right time...
I loved when the guy made fun of Colonel Ludlow, then the Colonel smokes him.😄😄😄
Tears me up every time. Nothing better than family being brought together around killing those who mean them harm. Bullets & Love, great combo.
One of the greatest movies of all times. I can see my father and grandfather doing this for real, along with my uncles.
The description is everything! 😂😂
Only movie I tear up at every time I watch it... unbelievable film...
I indeed don't believe any of it
One of the best movies, the legend Hopkins and Brat.
The description had me lol'ing! Well done!
This scene always makes me tear up. Then tears started streaming as I read the video description. Oh, 2007 internet, I do miss you sometimes.
If only they had made the music louder and more triumphal. They could have set a record.
Okay, so been watching this movie all my life and completely missed that instead of repeating himself he actually yelled "Yah," which startled the horse leaving him distraction to raise the shotgun. I might be late on this though, but my God pure genius in acting and writing.
Not late, that’s one of the things about a truly epic film, it’s a piece of art and you notice something new as you grow and change
I just caught that too
When the double barrel 12 gauge came out it was game on.alfred around the corner with the lever action saved the day .thats family for you.great movie writing this in April 2022 while staying inside due to covid.God bless America.
This is why the "SIR" precludes the Anthony Hopkins! My favorite actor. He has made really bad movies good despite the efforts of the director(s) to make it horrible.
...........Anthony Hopkins Became a United States Citizen..No Longer a British Subject........Sir.(Title). means nothing.......Very Cool....Actor an Person............
Just enough to make you cry
What a scene! Tristan ready to die. "What's going on here?" Alfred's redemption. 1Stab celebrates.
