    All these comments were 4 years ago. It’s now after 4 years and Fiji is now in debt more than ever, employees fighting for their rights and wages, corruption everywhere, indigenous Fijians are worried about their own land taken away and being sold to investors without their consent, cost of living is not equal with our wages, more students are in debt because of TELS, so much money wasted on freebies and people of Fiji are oblivious to what is really happening in our country today.
    Fiji will never change unless the government changes. Some of you reading this will disagree but before you do, think about the country and our future, our kids future. Do you really want a future with a corrupted government?
    Let me tell you a fact, if you are still paying off something which you have bought from example a tv or a fridge or a phone from courts but you need to travel outside of the country?! YOU CANT! Immigration will stop you. So for students out their who voted for this FFP and think TELS is a good idea, News flash! It is not. Say if you finally get your degree and you are looking for a job but you offered a job in NZ or Aus? Don’t bother! You will never leave the country until you pay or your $30k or $40k student loan. I have seen this happen many times.
    Anyways to all strong FFP supporters out their who thinks that what I’m saying is just bullshit? Then you are just dumb and narrow minded and just selfish as any other supporters out their.

      Thank you Inoke Veikoso for your views, I just wanted to emphasize the TELS scheme part, Firstly I am a student at a university here in Fiji and am also under the TELS scheme setup by this government. In my opinion, I believe that getting this degree which I am studying for, does outweigh the loan or money which I have to pay back to the government because I believe that knowledge is power which cannot really be put in money terms and having knowledge is priceless. So in my opinion it is worth paying back to the government for this tels loans with already having a guaranteed job, to allow opportunities for the upcoming generation who seek higher education to be educated at the universities of their choice, so basically it is an initiative that reciprocates. It also does benefit those who wish to pursue their dream career jobs by getting themselves the knowledge and skills that are required for their aspirations in life.
      However, I also believe that everything has a downside and there will always be problems that will exist in relation to this type of initiative such as, will jobs be guaranteed after this students finish their education from these universities in few years time, does their area of study even have a market in Fiji with good wages that they expect and so many more. As well as the question if the loan they had taken under Tels for their education has had a fruitful output contribution to family, society and Fiji as a whole.
      I am a FFP voter, however I have also disagreed with most of the governments actions and policies, in terms of freebies which is making the people more dependent, the violation of institution independence such as making the bureau of statistics disregarding race in the census which is important in order to identify which race needs help in bridging literacy levels, evaluating standards of living and other social issues that need to be addressed according to race wise as we are all culturally different. Reserve Bank of Fiji and many more institutions who have somehow been influenced by the government, who are not critical of government actions and leaving the Government to keep going on this shopping spree.
      I believe that there is a need for a lot of discussions on a national level on these issues that are affecting us all not only in parliament, having consultations with academics who are expertise in their fields and not having the government making the decisions by themselves and forcing it on our throats which I seem to see a lot in the FFP government.
      All in all, I am a FFP voter, who agrees with you a lot on some or a lot of issues that this government has done and continuously done. I don't event know if I am going to vote for the same party in the next election. I am an indigenous Fijian who does not agree with some of sodelpa's policies as they are somehow too extreme and too socialist for me, as I believe there is too much of politicizing of matters which have only benefited the chiefs and elite indigenous Fijians and not focusing on the real issues that individual everyday Fijians suffer and go through from the interior to maritime dwellers.
      Thank you.

    I have just listened to Mr Qarase's reply to the AG. As an Indo-Fijian, now living in the UK, I totally agree with what Mr Qarase has to say. The GCC in my opinion is the very pinnacle of Fijian society, very much like the Queen and the Royal Family is to the British public.

      The Queen does not interfere with the elections
      The government is elected by the voters which ever party wins governs the country, With all the respect to GCC . Culture and traditions are important , The set up of GCC is discriminatory to ordinary hard working fijians.let there be fair and free election and which ever party wins runs the country. Not to be interfered by the GCC.

      Why do indigenous people have to buy their own land, they are the first people to settle on their land and have lived on the land for thousands of years even before the Indians were brought as slaves from India under the indentured system. The Indians pay for the land because they are simply migrant people and second settlers to a land which has already been owned, they also sustained the economy because they needed to make themselves something out of nothing, they worked hard as they had nothing after leaving everything back in India as they were tricked by the British. They were able to become economically progressed in Fiji as they came from a more progressed enlightened society compared to the indigenous Fijians society which were kept to their own villages and way of life and away from the economical financial aspects of things by the British.

    A good speech and in my personal opinion I would add that the abrogation and the reinstatement of the GCC should be left alone with the indigenous people of Fiji and not any governments now or in the future let alone any illegal governments for that matter to decide...if the current regime wishes to abolish the GCC then why NOT put it on referendum to the Indigenous Fijians to decide????????????? that's the democratic way and NOT the way it is NOW...forcing in their throat to accept GCC to be abolished....that's an insult to ALL ordinary indigenous Fijians of Fiji....the best way for this current regime is to ASK for forgiveness and reconciliations to ALL the people of Fiji of the wrongs it did from 2006 until now....and then establish a TRUTH COMMISSION as way forward before the election in September....I had mentioned this so many times to them VIA its current constitutional submission in 2012....but looks like the regime is over-confident in the final results of the 2014 election....God Help my beloved Fiji to move into the right direction....

  • @puahelava
    @puahelava 9 лет назад +2

    Wow, people talk about the progress that this regime has brought to Fiji in the last 8 years.
    Point 1: What changes? have and will these changes benefited Fiji(its people, its economy, its future)?
    2: Where is all the funding for this coming from? Who is paying for it, and at what cost?
    3: This regime has had 8 years to make changes, more time than any other govt term would allow (so definitely, changes should be visible)
    4: due to the coup, Fiji has made some affiliations with other countries and govts that the rest of the world cautious about (e.g. North Korea, Iraq) - how does this benefit the country?
    Free education/tuition
    - at what cost to the economy? What is the cost of repayment? what are the conditions of repayment?
    - what are the people really paying in V.A.T?
    - how much longer can Fiji survive in a deficit?
    Land
    1. The iTaukei are owners of the land, no disputing that - even the Geneva convention states the ownership of land and land rights belong to the indigenous: it is their entitlement.
    2. Taking away indigenous land rights only fuels fires of the racial war.
    I totally agree that there needs to be a paradigm shift in the way we respond to one another, in our difference and in our approach to our country. There is no perfect party, because all parties are made up of men(and women) who are, unfortunately imperfect (broken to some extant) and tend to operate out of that brokenness.
    We need to critically, and analytically question and reflect upon our history, and decide who will help Fiji move forward (in the right direction that is).

Everyone will give an account of himself to the One who sits on the Throne of Judgement. Whoever lead the nation must and should be rule on Righteousness and Justice. The government of the day should be based on this 2 important words going forward. It is bigger than races, beliefs or political ideology.

    Very interesting and honest opinion. I agree that GCC is pivotal for Fiji.
    However, GCC needs a rigorous culture change for the people of Fiji (everyone born in Fiji) and not just for portion of Fiji. Protecting the heritage, land and culture is fine as long as this is incorporated into the gov. ministry.
    Putting too much power into one Unit restricts opportunity for people born in Fiji.
    For instance, when you were born in Fiji, different rules applied if you are Fijian/Indian/etc/etc - perhaps still does... (If you want to debate this then you were not born in Fiji)
    If GCC had been open minded, situation would have been different by now.
    Where is the meeting minutes on the discussions since GCC formed? How much has been spent? What is the outcome so far? Who has benefited so far from this initiative? Provide us the value each GCC meeting has made for the people of Fiji - not just for a particular population.
    GCC needs to earn the trust of the people and work for the people to sell their idea, so far its all just noise.

      in my opinion Mr Qarase left out a point, GCC represents our indigenous history, and even before the group was formalized it initiated change (eg./ the signatures on the Deed of Cession)
      the GCC members represent so much more than themselves, or their titles, they represent our history. im not trying to say that the GCC is perfect(far from it) but when we maintain links to the past, learn from the mistakes, instead of demolishing said link, and being condescending and blind towards its importance, we have a better chance

      you are a Fijian by law if you are born in fiji because you are a citizen of this country, but in terms ethnicity - someone would refer the term Fijians to the indigenous people, and Fji-born indians as Indo-Fijians. If a Fijian was born in India, do you think people would call him Indian, because of his ethnicity ? obviously no, but he is an Indian citizen because he is India-born.
      Citizenship and Ethnicity are two things, when you mistakingly interpret someone referring to ethnicity you get racism.

Like Rabuka SODELPA should of sidelined Qarase from the outset. Unfortunately enough damage had already being down before SODELPA realised their mistake. What a very costly decision for them.

    I dont think there is a problem with having a structure like GCC the principles of having structure and leadership I think is Godly . I think chiefs are Gods design in fijian setting to serve the people of the Land ..the term serve means servant but the system long time ago calls leadership -ruler and 1 way traffic system and serve me attitude...If the Chiefs really want the GCC back ..easy serve your people..Jesus the King of Kings served in his time ...wanna create a revolution Chiefs stop wanting to be served #1- go down to the kava mixer and mix kava... serve the nursers / doctors / teachers that are in your village ...rugby coaches /Go to government officers (rural development) regarding ways to bring about community transformation serve them come ago side them attend to their needs and bring change... Now thats GCC beast mode ... !! if #1- doesn't work repeat #1 again ! :))

    Bula vinaka braca . . . .I don't think debates about Great Council of Chiefs will ever die out. As you clearly say there, it was set up by our ancestors to look after the interests of the Fijian people or iTaukei as we're known today. Fiji became a British colony and GCC was kept on though considered by many Brits as serving no purposes at all. They pointed out that Fiji like other democracies should only be served by a central government which consists of a Legislative, an Executive and a Judiciary - bodies capable of running the administrations of a democracy. It worked perfectly well while we were a British Colony. Now that we are a Republic perhaps its time to leave out GCC and concentrate instead on our Central Government to run our democracy. The Native Land Trust Board is there already, so why not channel our problems through them instead of over-burdening the Fijian Administration with another outside body like the GCC?

    It is interesting to analyse the comments below.
    80% (28 positive comments along with their thumbs up replies) support PMLQ's speech;
    17% (6 negative comments along with their thumbs down replies) do no support for PMLQ. 4 comments were made by the same person;
    and 3% (or 1 comment) was neutral.
    What does this mean from these numbers, Fark Banks' subjective comments below on racism are biased. PMLQ, made sense that the Indigenous Fijians are aggrieved with a mind-set, that if political and economic stability is not addressed objectively and satisfactorily, it will cost Fiji dearly.

    Actually I think Mr Kaiyum in my opinion has got to be the best AG that Fiji has ever produced. He has played a darn good job in assisting Bainimarama steer Fiji through a very difficult 8 years. I was one of those who was against Bainimarama when he carried out the 2006 coup. But since then I have to give the regime credit for the advancement that the country has made. I am now convinced that Bainimarama was right along that the 2006 coup had to happen to change Fijis trajectory for the good of the Fiji as a nation state over that of special interests.
    Sorry Mr Qarase its time you retired peacefully. You had your time and you blew it. Its just sour grapes with you. Give it a rest.

      well if that's your opinion, how does it feel when you cannot critisize the govt and hope not to be taken in at night by police or get 3000.00per day on suppossedly work o/seas while our hospitals are filthy, unsuitable for humane occupation etc etc...

    Former PM, Former Director - Fijian holdings and Advisor to the GCC; can you please clarify if the allegations against your corruption case for buying out 200,000 class A shares for your family business Q-ten investments Ltd through another co-op and approving and allocating the shares in your capacity as Director is true? If it is, you have already disrespected the GCC structure and it's members and the iTaukei population. I feel you did not do as much in your time as PM and like the other leaders, you also had dirty laundry before stepping into power. I would have expected a more educated approach, mainly in the talks of solutions to our problems rather than pointing fingers and blaming people. We are humans and we have history that may not be good, but if we look at solutions we assure ourselves of progress and prosperity. I really expected more from you Mr. Qarase being a family/friend but I take my hat off to the government of the day for their effort in such financial difficult times.
