Thanks to Emma for letting us watch her train. Her slice looked really good to me. Hard to tell what the kick was doing, but it was consistent. Another example of how helpful good coaching is...
Was playing tennis about 2 1/2 weeks ago and a player on another Court said; every time he see a pickleball court, he wants to dive-bomb it. I said, definitely..😀😱😁
I'm so attentive now in Momentum Mechanics this guy is just throwing all.this knowledge at me really fast and every video I watch I obviously still need a Coach to pin point the faults so I don't start bad I'm still new to this and will be for a long long time
I started incorporating jumprope and hurdles into my serve practice. I want to practice serving when I'm less than full stamina and elevated heart rate. Like a match situation
You provide great content. Appreciate the wholistic approach you bring to your lessons and viewers and providing options for people. It’s so helpful. 4.5 player
Great video. I sympathize w/ Emma when Coach is trying to get the hip to tilt and then the back to bend... it feels like it's not going to happen. I do stretch and yoga but I haven't been able to get that to open up.
Hi coach. Great video. Question , I was practicing my serve couple days ago and my shoulder hurts since then. What am I doing wrong? Yes I have been playing for just couple yrs so I still learning. Thx in advance for your answer
Thanks for another great video! Best tennis channel on youtube! What are the main things intermediate players should focus on to get more power on the serve? I remember seeing in another one of your videos how you said you did not even know about how the arm pronated when you grew up playing tennis, and how thinking about that could result in fake pronation and slowing down the serve. So, what are the top fundamental things a player should think about and try to execute so that the other elements of the serve fall into place? Thanks in advance. 🙂
I am very interested by your comments on back foot loading. During my serve certification with the Kovacs Institute, they showed many studies that show the weight distribution at various points in the serve. And during the loading phase (trophy position) the weight was predominantly on the back foot. Back leg loading is one of the key points of their training and Marc Kovacs has worked with John Isner, Reilly Opelka, Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.
I watched this video by Dr. Marc Kovacs (former head of usta training (I think) He says load the back hip(leg). I agree with Intuitive tennis. To me it wasn't natural. Made my toss not go far enough in front which I wanted. Just a weird feeling. Thoughts?
Ema seemed to be hitting the Deuce T on the kick serve. It will not curve away from the returner as the kick serve from the Ad side does, but still very effective as it is going towards the returner's backhand. On second serve from the Deuce, I would mainly use that kick serve over the slice.
she mentions that she wants to start moving her elbow more to the right, good tips about that, i could be making the same mistake. She initially already has it correct at 0:00 starting the elbow from middle.
Nic, why when Emma was hitting kicks towards the end there was her follow through finishing on the left side of her body like a normal serve, yet when you hit your kick you seem to follow through keeping your racquet on the right side of your body…or am I imaging things?
Hi Nik- Interested that you say Sabalenkas problems with the serve were mental. I thought Gavin MacMillan, her biomechanics coach had explained that her non dominant arm wasn’t being placed correctly on the toss?
@@tijgertjekonijnwordopgegeten I think it’s because he doesn’t want to give free advertising without a sponsorship deal. He’s made videos about what racquet he uses, and he’s also stated that he’s very picky so I don’t see him changing unless he’s offered money deal.
What makes a trophy pose impossible for me is my unbreakable habit of taking my racquet back too soon, it's back by the time the ball leaves my hand creating major racquet shaking.
For a drill try starting with your racquet hanging down by your leg(so not hands together)toss the ball and don’t move your arm back until the ball is up
@@Michelle-414 great, watch some videos on creating ‘lag’ on the serve, essentially it’s basically the racquet arm moving a little slower than the tossing arm during ‘arms down and trophy position’…Nick would have a good video on here I’m sure
Sorry, I am a great fan of yours but in this case you are wrong, She is going to injure herself if she keeps pushing her hip into the court. She was on the right path by loading a bit on her right leg, that is very doable, efficient and safe, Many professional players do it now and they know better
Emma’s left hand is too tight. Just stuck to the body. Left hand elbow should towards back after hitting the server, left arm movement should help the up torso bend smoothly.
I'm genuinely curious and not trying to sound mean but how is it possible to have been on the professional tour and not have had any coach - prior to now - point out these serve fundamentals to her? Are there low ranked ATP players also who have problems like these on their serves or is this purely an issue with women's coaching?
Most of these players learned young. I once had a college level player who couldn’t even explain the forehand. He had no idea what was actually happening on a technical level. Garcia is one of the biggest servers on the WTA tour and when she had to change technical components of her serve she started from the trophy position to learn proper mechanics for a whole season. She was still a top 5 server that season.
@@TehNomad but that first tip regarding the elbow position is such a basic, fundamental aspect of creating power in a serve, I don't know how someone plays on the tour and either gets away with it or has nobody point it out to them. Does that happen on the men's tour? I don't think it does but maybe I'm wrong
i think it,s the result that counts.her timing is good, her serve jumps well up. so unless she wanted to change it i would leave it as it is@@hehehehehahahaha2025
It's crazy that Ema is trying to change things she had been doing correctly all her life. I feel like it's a strength issue rather than technical issue. Those thinner women on WTA tour never serve very hard.
Rubbish. All the current top WTA servers are quite skinny short of maybe Sabalenka. Strength has little to do with serving big compared to optimized mechanics.

Great serve lesson. I've learned a lot. Thank you !

Marat satin was a great example of step on the outside! He had on of the flattest serves while using a 93sq in, 18x20 string pattern! Lol
So good. This is a video I will be watching repeatedly to refresh this advice re the serve as you’ve touched on so many issues for me 🙌

love it! working through everyday limitations and tendencies with pros and cons is super useful.

Tweak the lower back by bending. I found that raising the chest opposed to bending the back has more benefit and doesn't hurt my old lumbar.
Appreciate these videos, Nick!

Way to go Nick and Ema🎉

Very good serve
Vic Braden always said toss in front and to the right for a first serve and slice serve

Kick body serve on Duce side can deceiving . Make you feel you can hit it well and end up framing… thoughts?

Hi Nik- Interested that you say Sabalenkas problems with the serve were mental. I thought Gavin MacMillan, her biomechanics coach had explained that her non dominant arm wasn’t being placed correctly on the toss?
Isn’t there a slight confusion between the kick and the topspin serves? It’s really hard «to attack the kick serve”, unless it’s not a topspin serve.
19/20 2nd serves in? She has no issues with her 2nd serve
She has the right shoes!

Babolat Pure Drive Plus. He just spray painted it white.

She doesn’t have much explosiveness with lower body which hurts her power…. But technique isn’t bad at all.. Giorgi is super explosive..
