As a die hard usagi fan I was honestly disappointed with this series. I’d always dreamed of some of my favourite usagi stories like grass cutter and the mother of mountains being animated, but like you say I’m not the target audience. I really hope in the future we will get a slightly more adult usagi series, including the best characters Jei, tomoe and usagi himself

I feel like If they were going in a kid direction I'm glad they set it in the future cuz having Usagi act like Yuichi would have made me hate the series. I love the Usagi series and want it exactly like it was from the books. I feel like this has time to grow and become more while not destroying the original books...........though the whole Usagi teams up with the Neko Ninja in the past seemed very suspicious to me since they are currently mortal enemies in the books.

I can say with 1000% certainty that this show while it’s not Usagi we read in the comics is actually way too good then what you may think at first glance.
A friend of mine who is a fan of comic series finally got him to watch first season and he loves it now. And with season 2 there’s more to enjoy learning bout different characters like the team and going forward

Its funny you bring up the tmnt comparisons because looking back at the 03 and 2012 series their later seasons narratively began to take darker tones. Like the 2012 series the animation itself felt stiff in its movements but gradually improved as it went on. Should the series get more seasons it may take a similar approach. Personally though I'm happy Usagi is getting a proper animation treatment aside from being relegated to varying degrees of cameos within the TMNT continuity. The comics themselves are packed with amazing stories and characters and with how the show gives us glimpses about the Original Usagi's past it be a nice to see how they adapt the other mythos as the show itself does have little nods and easter eggs to the source material. All in all it may not be the best it's still a fun show. Love the review mate. Keep it up.

The original Usagi comics is not a comic series for kids. It is a dark, bloody, and grim series that isn't afraid to dived into mature topics. Such as the treatment of Woman, the cruelty on peasents by Nobles, and suicide. Not every story arc ends happily, but that's what makes Usagi such a great engaging series. You never know how the story will go and how it'll end. Unfortunate, if the comic was adpated into an animation series with all of it's bloody and dark topics intact, it wouldn't be for kids or even teen. It'd be more for young adults. So I think it was wise to tone it down for kid audience. Plus, the creators Usagi, Stan, put his thoughts on how the show should look as he envision it if the comic ever got adapted.

As a longtime Usagi fan as well I feel like this series is not Usagi Yojimbo (Sakai has tried every once in a while to get it into animation but whenever that happened which was once it went to the future which this did. It really only spawned a pilot called Space Usagi and didn't test well. This is why everyone in the netflix series thinks he looks like Usagi when he clearly does not, because its like a call back to Space Usagi which looked exactly like Usagi but in the future.) Also I think of this series as a kind of kid Usagi because Yuichi was pretty much like how Usagi as a kid behaved before meeting his master Katsuichi. I feel if they mature the characters as time goes on it would give the show a good character progression and make the show better over all.

I'm really into Edo Period Japan genre to be honest. I like the futuristic Neo Edo. I love Yuichi Usagi for himself. But everthing seems to be going simple. İt needs more improvemen. The characters needs to be challanged to grow. Some character development were not enough. Although, I love how they designed yokais and showed us that they can be good too. I love that trope. I like how Yuichi grows tgrough the series and i think ıt needs more. Same goes for other characters. Karasu-tengu is cool. Hana is an adorable kid. Auntie is he best aunt. I know this show is targeted to kids but it could also have dark elements as well. Like rottmnt, monkie kid, amphibia, hilda and the owl gouse. I do hope Usagi Yojimbo will get another show in the future. Maybe in 2d.

The animation and comedy are just so.. stiff. I was really excited about this and it honestly had so much potential, a steampunk neon Japanese style city sounds so cool but the animation just did it so dirty. Rise of the tmnt didn't have much plot either but the animation and comedy are genuinely really well done and it makes this show look like crap in comparison. I loved the idea of the yokai villans they just didn't run with it like they could have.

It’s not THE best but has tiny charms to it I guess
Note that I really haven’t seen all episodes just a glimpse on each episode cuz my siblings watch it
But the only thing I liked was again, the comic animation thingy instead of the cgi, yes u are probably right about the small budget they had, the thing is that creeps me out with the animation is the eyes.. in animation eyes are very expressive but in this show some of the scenes the eyes
just show very *blank* empressions idk how to explain it but... it’s sometimes the characters eyes just LITERALLY stays still even when there’s supposed something going on. And they just don’t look at some characters probably.. so yes it’s probably the budget...
Another thing I liked so far are the characters design and the yokai (idk how to spell it?)
The fox character looks cool especially I love how they designed her hair like a foxes tail
The main character(I completely forgotten his name-) yes same thing with the fox but ties his ears like hair
The ninja cat.... ehh she looks cool but I just feel like her eyes are too big or something BUT I have to say the evil ninjas leader looks sooooo coooool
I really liked how they nailed the Persian breed looks (I think it’s Persian I’m not sure-)
    Now the yokai..
I really liked the deception yokai designs (the bird/crane one) idk why but she looks badass to ME
The rest.. idk I haven’t really seen the others lol
So is it good... idk don’t ask me, I have very bad tastes

That's a great breakdown! Yeah the eyes at times can look really dead, but that's just the cost limit most likely. And I agree the characters and Yokai do look cool and for a show with a much younger target audience that's pretty much all you need. But it's a shame because of how much better it could have been given the source material of the comics

It's fun to watch the show it's one of those movies so bad their good but honestly the writers are one of those it's for kids it's not that deep type but I do like the queer and neurodivergent coding with Usagi having so much autism and ADHD moments I'm waiting for the writers to confirm it or how they put kitsune and chizu having their paws in a heart shape and how chizu out of all the gang wanted to gain the trust of kitsune the most hinting that they will end up together
