Alot of people seem to be worried about doing this kid of job, realistically, the main part about this job that is specific and requires real knowledge is setting preload and backlash. Any regular person can remove the d.s. and pull the third member. You could save a lot of money by just dropping off the third member to a professional to actually install the locker, and set the back lash and preload. The. Pick it up, take it home and reinstall it.
Well, I am that crazy person, I have even overhauled an engine. It does not look that complicated. I guess is just a matter of having detailed instructions, specs and the right tools. I am going to do it.
Hey ARB! Great video. Can u guys make a detailed video for a tundra new gen. It would be much appreciated. I will loan u my truck for the video. Haha. Thanks.
Great vid, I have a question, I’m new so please take it easy on me. I have a 2018 Toyota Tacoma SR 4x4 that is not equipped with a rear locker, can I directly install this into my differential on the sr without replacing the entire rear end or pumpkin? Thank you for your help.
What year is this Toyota? I have a 2012 Tundra with a 10.5" rear. Apparently only two aftermarket rears are available for my truck: The ARB air locker and the Auburn LSD. I need a selectable locker that I could lock-in off road or on the track, and then operate unlocked as an LSD in everyday driving. If you guys have this locker, please advise. I'm gonna look into it.
Follow your factory manual. The only thing we recommend is an oil with no limited slip additive or friction modifier. The friction modifier can prematurely wear the seals.
I have a 2015 Toyota 4 runner SR5. It did not come with a factory locker. I'm confused. After installing the ARB locker how will I Engage or Disengage the locker from the cabin while driving?
I have a problem with ARB lockers. The twin o-rings inside the air line ring (seal housing) mounted onto the axle spline gear (bearing journal) is so low quality. They begin to leak after a year and start to pump your diff oil out to the air pump and now you have an oil leak from your air pump. And when the leak increases with more wear, your lockers stop locking. You have to dismantle the whole diff to change those washers. And guess what, those also wear and here we go again. They are constantly subjected to friction when the axles are moving. This is a big design weakness. I prefer electrically operated lockers now.
What’s maintenance like and how often should the components be inspected. I am worried about warranty and want to ensure longest locker life if I decide on the install.
The maintenance is the same as your factory differential. If you change your differential oil on a scheduled routine or after off roading in wet conditions (water crossings) the locker will last for a long time.
@@woodlogan mate, you're right, but I don't want to "pop a pumpkin" when I'm taking my kids camping. Not everyone with a 4WD only owns it to challenge themselves or it on a technical track. And yes, I can "pop a pumpkin" and have twice over the past three years to replace bonded seals in my rear locker. Simple fact is nothing lasts forever and most things are a compromise. But ARB air lockers are poorly designed in terms of the bonded seals/O rings. They just are. And while you point out it's not the biggest problem to change the seals, I actually have better things to do with my time. And on a so called "quality" product I shouldn't have to twice in three years. And yes, they were installed by ARB and not me so it wasn't installer issues. Anyway, have a good one.:)

Yes, and I have an AWD landcruiser with ARB's front and rear. They work great, when the are unlocked the truck drives like normal, and when locked goes anywhere you point it.
Please check out the website and download the vehicle application guide for your 4Runner and it will tell you what lockers will work with it. arbusa.com/guides/vehicle-application-guides/

Why does an ARB locker use an open diff instead of a helical (Torsen) center section? It seems like it wouldn't be any more difficult to package. Everyone agrees that a helical LSD is better than an open diff. The only question is whether a helical LSD is better than an ARB air locker, and the answer comes down to expected use. My dream diff is an ARB lockable helical LSD. Best of all worlds.

they didnt show pulling the axles. do you not have to pull the axles to do this?
John Thibodeaux , Yes...axles need to be pulled out.
Great call!
You made it look easy. Now come do mine!
Didn’t look as bad as I thought,,me question was where does the air apply,,simple enough,,,pretty straight forward, thanks
Air compressor. Usually mounted in engine bay.

the pin wrench that you used for the back lash and bearing preload will any pin wrench work ? or do you have to have the one from ARB?
Did you pull the axles out and just didnt show it on the video?

This is a whole carrier replacement and why they had to remove the gears from the open differential carrier and put them in the ARB carrier.

Full synthetic don’t have limited slip is that ok too used
He just said friction modifier wears out the seals, so in your case that's good you put a non limited slip gear oil in.
Just waiting for my gears from nitro so I can install both lockers. They are just sitting in my garage staring at me.
Are there people you can go to who will install it for you?
Absolutely. Check out our dealer locator at ARBUSA.com/Dealer-Locator to find a local shop who specializes in Air Locker installation.
