Both players played incredibly sloppy this set, but the fact that M2K was still able to out clutch Hbox, literally AKA clutchbox, is super impressive. His mentality always seems at it's best after he takes a break from the game.
He's obviously rusty in tech but you can see his veteran tournament mentality is still there, and he had a lot of reads on Hbox.
Lol, I started laughing when M2K started practicing his Fox techskill in the middle of game 2. But to think that actually helped him win the set is crazy.
That is the most M2K thing to do. But turning a liability into an advantage is smart. It may have added some tilt factor as well.

Being a Mew2King fan, the lows feel pretty low, but the highs are probably the highest any fan can get from watching their favorite Melee player win. All hail the king!
Agreed. Although, I think the Mang0 fan lows can hit even harder. These past few years have been a bit hard when you expect such high level play. M2K is in a similar situation but it's been so long since his reign that you just don't expect as much. That does make it even more hype when he does well though
After a week-long lead up of hearing M2K say stuff like 'I'm going to be rusty, don't expect a lot' and top players being fairly pessimistic about his run due to his hiatus r.e. bracket projection, this is TOP SHIT! I'm not even a die-hard fan though I've always respected him, but he won the hearts of the people w/ this one.

@@katiieeardley This tournament was certainly legendary. I've been following the scene for about 7-8 years, and this is easily in my top 3 tournies of all time. Only thing more hype would have been Mang0 vs M2K in the grand finals. I'm so happy with the results though. Great job by everyone who played.

Depression just sucks man. It's turned so many M2K wins into lesser placings just from losing one set.
Any tournaments where he doesn't lose a set, he just steamrolls.

But from what he has said and described, he has depression.
He's even said it himself.
It's actually a very common thing for people with high intelligence, and even more common for people with high functioning autism/asperger's.
So being a very smart guy with aspergers, it's not suprising.
That also explains his feelings of worthlessness and self hatred, which are very likely to happen in high pressure situations like what has happened to M2K in the past.
Though he has gotten a lot better at not getting as depressed when he starts losing, hopefully he's had a good mindset adjustment now and worked on that more while he's been retired from Melee.
I told M2k he killed it after the set and that it reminded me of BH3 and all he said was how bad he is now compared to back then lol

CEO 2018, goml 2018, mom con 2018, smash con 2018. All had better placements than this one, this is literally one of the worst tournaments he has had sense summit (his last win, less than a year ago). Which is understandable considering he's been gone for a better part of a year

Your just looking at one tournament out of like 11 sense summit, if you look at all the tournaments sense summit its subpar. Not a bad performance but M2K is M2K. He isn't someone to overlook or underestimate.

@Adi Kancharla He is already looking a bit better on his channel, but it's hard to say when he will feel ready for the grind again. If he started entering, then it would be great. He adds an element to dynamic among players you don't really see too much right now.

Mew2king is one of strangest top players in melee. The obsession with grinding tech skill, even during matches, makes me think he just sees the game very differently from the majority. Glad he's still part of the game though. Honestly, his mentality is his biggest strength and weakness at the same time. I hope he comes back to melee and makes a resurgence next year. His style of play is actually pretty amazing to watch when he is feeling his marth and what not.
This is CRAZY, great job M2K and good run HBox. This just makes me wanna see PPMD return so bad and have a comeback like this...

Honestly after this set, Mew2King is the true winner of this whole tournament.
he definitely won in the eyes of many viewers.
hbox has always had animated body language, but i have never seen him look so flustered and nervous.. really showed up in his gameplay. lasers were probably the most impactful decision for m2k's victory. fun set to watch.

Hbox’s last two stocks of game five were pure eustress gamer testosterone. These are the moments that make Melee special.
M2k is actually statistically the best player vs hbox in game 5 situations I believe. M2k almost always wins game5 sets, the sets he loses are always 3-1 or 3-0. He’s heavily favored vs him in game5s and hbox is actually aware of this, he alluded to it at the mlg tourney M2k said puff carries you btw in Twitter. I think he’s lost maybe two game 5 sets since 2015 vs hbox

If youre new to watching melee i can agree with you, but for me after 1 year of it taking up a big chunk of every top 8, the matchup got pretty stale and frustrating to watch. And that was in 2016, I'm so burnt out on puff-fox as a matchup, far more than any other matchup in melee
