Yeah, Peter knew how to play a lot of instruments! he was damn good, huh? These guys never got the recognition they deserved and I've always hated that. the Monkees were a great band and let's give them the credit they deserve.
Peter was also an accomplished musician before the group was formed. His roommate was Stephen Stills, who auditioned for the show and then told Pete about it!
Everytime I see this clip, at the very beginning, I get a flashback of watching it on the original TV series in 1967. It's neat to see Davy playing the drum kit.
I love this song. They played it over the sound system before the Mighty Mighty Bosstones came on this past summer. This song was pretty punk before punk was even a thought in anyone's mind. Great song, I've found an appreciation for The Monkees.
Fantastic song - written by Micky Dolenz, for all those doubters that think they were only actors. He is singing about a party they attended with the Beatles in 1967 when they visited England. The song is also known as 'Alternate Version' and is available on their LP/CD 'Headquarters'.
Combining the two verse and chorus parts together over top of themselves (1:59-2:17) comes across sounding like pure genius, Mickey wrote some really great stuff. Love it!
Awww, another of my childhood dreams, popped. My Mother met the Beatles, and said they were all nice young men, but of course I rather hoped one of them was a little less than gentlemanly!
Randy Scouse Git is a term from a tv sitcom from the 60's and 70's called Till Death Us Do Part. The lead character Alf Garnett is a Londoner who is racist, sexist, xenophobic etc etc. His son in law Mike is a layabout Liverpudlian who Alf often called a Randy Scouse Git. Mike was played by Tony Booth, father of Cherie Blair, wife of Tony, the former Prime Minister. Try and find the show, it was hilarious, especially Alf arguing with his wife Else (the silly moo)
"The Four Kings of EMI are sitting stately on the floor": that line is from an impromptu visit Micky made one time to where the Beatles were staying, and they were just sitting on the floor listening to records. "Randy Scouse Git" is a British insult that Mickey heard from a British comedy series he enjoyed watching at the time, and it tickled his fancy so much he titled his song after it. Randy of course means "horny", Scouse is slang for someone from Liverpool, and "Git" means a contemptible or low-class person. So "Randy Scouse Git" literally means a horny person from Liverpool who's contemptible....
@@anthonyramirez1341 I heard they were actually at a party, a Birthday Party for John Lennon...all of The Beatles were there, and other music stars... "Birds out on the sidewalk" referenced the girls, or in the US, "chicks" who were waiting outside for autographs from the Beatles. "A Valet at the door" for a residence? Doubt it...and Mickey didn't think too much of Lennon, as he slept with a lot of fans . It wasn't just a "visit". The Monkees were on tour, Cass Elliott of The Mama's and the Papas was also there, and the girl Mickey references in the beginning, "She's a wonderful lady and she's mine all mine..." was a British model, who was hosting Top of The Pops, and she eventually became Mickey's first wife. Randy Scouse Git was taken from the British TV show called "Until Death Do Us Part, which America's TV show, "All In The Family" was taken. The "Archie" character used to call the "Mike" character that name. Mickey absolutely knew what it meant.
There are several explanations of what git means in vernacular English. It was used freely on TV in a similar way to jerk in the US. You might recall Phil Collins persuading the producer of Miami Vice to allow him to use w⚓️ when he appeared on the show as that’s the British version. One explanation is that it derives from the fourteenth century ‘beget’ which may be interpreted as b a s t a r d. In short the song is you horny b a s t a r d from Liverpool. My personal experience of the use of git is being hit round the head by my grandfather when he thought I called my brother a git when we were out on his boat. He then explained why he did it and what the word meant to him. He was born in 1905 in the Orkney islands. As such for at least some of the British population that was the meaning. I too am a fan of the Monkees from watching repeats of their TV programmes when I was a child in the 70’s. I wanted to live that life.
@Whyaye5oh That was the entire appeal of the show. Micky Dolenz in an interview said it was "every 11 year-old boy's fantasy: living on your own away from your parents with a group of friends, in a bench-front house playing in a band every night. What kid Wouldn't want that?"
I just love this song. it's my favourite Monkees song of all time. in fact, I'll get it stuck in my head for days on end. I've been a Monkees fan for most of my 45 years, and while they were never musical geniuses, they sure put out some cute tunes. thanks for posting this one. sometimes I just need to hear it.
Davy drumming standing up; Peter wildly playing the piano and Micky banging on kettle drums-FREAKING AWESOME! .Would have loved to see Mike lose it too, but it was still great.
Me too! It's just too perfect!! Mike yawning, because as they were on tour, they were all exhausted, Peter on the piano and Davy on the drums, Mickey's manic singing and Davy dropping the drumsticks, the clattering sound as they hit the kit on the way to the floor, and Peter dropping his head on the piano keys in weariness at the end...and Mickey starts drumming again, LOVE IT!!!
I thought it was really cool when he was interviewed about the writing of this particular song. Both he and Davy were being encouraged by Mike to write on their own, as both he and Peter did at times. Micky started this and showed it to Mike who really sort of pressed him to finish it. They all had a hand in writing their instrumental parts for it, based on what Micky came up with, and the experience sort of ended up showing him that he could do more. Nice growing moment for him and the group.
These songs give me very pleasant memories of my childhood in the mid-1960s. I don't remember the videos. I should log on and buy Monkees D.V.D.s of decades gone by. Lots of neat tunes and talent. I saw Micky Dolenz in concert last month at the Palmer State Fair. Basically looks the same and seems to retain a youthful vigor and appearance.
Met Micky at a casino in WV class act all the way, performance was stellar plus he had his daughter singing with him. Very personable individual if you ever meet him. Plus a cool song.
the monkees are at once, one of the most under-rated yet, paradoxically, successful bands in terms of sales and top 40 hits. these songs are awesome! again, the songs are timeless but representative of the style of the time in which they were written and recorded. great stuff. michael nesmith's solo stuff is great.
And the room is in a mess.Mine and and the parties. This is my favorite song by the monkees so far.And to the people that goes to parties, always sing this song when the birthday boy/Girl comes.
Whoa! My 90s cassette tape version of this tune was only the first minute or so and fades out... 30 years later to realize there's so much more to the song! So awesome! Can't stop playing it!

Aw, this is a great clip. I love that Micky wrote this, and they all look like they're actually playing (hee at Davy having to stand to play the drums). There's a scene in "Monkees A La Mode" from the first season where Micky's playing the beginning riff of this song with his drumsticks. It's awesome.
They all wrote songs - Micky Dolenz wrote this one. Mike and Peter were expert guitarists and Peter was an expert Banjo player. The only reason they did not play on their first 2 albums was because they were working from 6:00am to 8:00pm each day, have a small break, work to 10:00pm laying down vocals, and then head for home (or in Peter's case, to the occasional par-tay!!)
In Mickys Autobiography Im A Believer,he said the song was about his trip to England. Interesting is he also said their is a reference to Mama Cass who flew over on the same plane with him but I have never been able to figure out where.
I like Mickey's poncho. It looks like the drapes in my house growing up backintheday! Seriously folks, what band hasn't bit a lil' off The Beatles, and they, in turn bit off Afro American Rock and Roll. Music isn't a competion, it's inspiration. Only real music fans get this.

Is. Thankfully. He's still with us.
Can never get enough of these guys, wish they were still with us. Like their TV show.
Peter was also an accomplished musician before the group was formed. His roommate was Stephen Stills, who auditioned for the show and then told Pete about it!
Of Crosby, Stills, & Nash for those who didn’t know.

I like how Mike kicks his leg when he starts playing.
Fantastic
And winks sometimes.
Catch the yawn starting at 1:14 lol
18 years later and RUclips recommends this to me. Such an amazing group.
Mickey Dolenz, thank you... for inventing the carpet shirt. C:
Perfect comment 😂

My wife agrees she loves them
Yup true

Who doesn't love the monkees? They are so funny!
grew up watching the show brilliant
This is so cool. Love this song. Pure classic and way beyond amazing. .
Let us all miss you Davy!! We'll miss you!!
Was in love with Mickey---he he, what memories :)
Thanks
This song never gets old.

Davy Jones was the heart and soul of The Monkees. R.I.P.
