    The Roland JD-800 Synthesizer from the year 1991 is one of my favorite digital synths. Very useful for film scoring. Here can you find the full JD-800 playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

    Frankly most, if not all, of the JD, JV, and XV line of instruments are capable of the huge palette of sounds that the JD-800 produces, it's just that since most musicians only see them packaged as rack-mounted units they don't really think of them as synths but rather as preset boxes heavy on non-synth sounds. There are so many insanely powerful digital synth engines out there that no one even thinks of because it's not in the shape of a large keyboard with a multitude of knobs and sliders.

      The JD has very unique FXs chain and different filter. It sounds much crisper and more agressive than the JV and XV/Fantom X/Juno DS series. So it really has its own character.

    • @MrBluGruv
      @MrBluGruv Год назад +1

      @@Acrimonious_Snake I get that there are tonality differences between the generations, but my point is they are all much more similar than a lot of people realize, and the JD-800 isn't capable of wholly-unique sounds compared to the rest just because it has a robust front panel layout. A similar comparison I'd make is in the realm of FM synthesizers: yes, different DACs lend themselves to slight variances in tone, but you wouldn't say that a DX9 is a completely different world of sound from a DS-8 because of the DAC, you'd acknowledge that even with that difference they are 95% similar in capabilities and that would apply to most any 4-op sine-only FM synth. You aren't going to get sounds across such a wide range as the JD-800 with something like a CS-80, but you can definitely get in the ballpark with even an XV-5050 if you can dedicate the time to programming it through a panel.

    • @Acrimonious_Snake
      @Acrimonious_Snake Год назад

      @@MrBluGruv That is right. Also most of the waveforms from the JD-800 are present in the XV series, some people even sell replicas of the factory JD-800 soundbanks for the XV-5080. And don't forget that the JV, XV and Fantom-like series are multi-timbral, allowing you to create huge stacks of sounds, up to 4 oscillators each.

    Reminds me of the 90s many tracks beck then had this synth on it. Don’t know to much about this synth, was it a better version of the D50? I just remember seeing it alot in the 90s being used. Got some nice sounds to it but Roland do make great synths anyway. I still would pick a Jupiter any day over this, but that’s just me but do love the sound of this synth. Thanks for sharing this beautiful synth with us. Always look forward to your next video.

      The JD800 was fully sample based and from a technical point of view had more in common with the later JV / XP series synthesizers from Roland. The sample set of the JD-800 however was mostly focust on synth-like waveforms rather than samples from acoustic instruments, which were dominant in the later mentioned synths. The D50 on the other hand used a rather different approach to digital synthesis, combining a 'virtual analog' style synth engine with basic analog type of waveforms and short 8-bit samples for the attack of the sound and some sample loops for special effects. It was a unique synth in this approach at the time. The D50 was replaced with the D70 in 1990, which has some similarities to the D50, but was also a bit different and had more higher quality acoustic samples in it, but a less flexible synth engine if I remember correctly.

    • @retrosound72
      @retrosound72  Год назад +2

      Not really a D50 follower. The JD is a sample ROM based synth. The D50 a digital synth with two waveforms and attack samples. The sound character is different too. I like the JD sound but I am not a friend of the D50.
      The JD was not a good seller for Roland.

      @@retrosound72 I think it’s a great synth, funny enough I checked it up on the net and saw how powerful it is and what it got to offer. Didn’t know much about it until now and shocked in what it can do. Funny you’re not a D50 fan? But got to say I’m not too. Don’t mind it but it was meant to be the DX7 killer but it wasn’t but then they did have to bring something out to take it on. Then the m1 came out and I feel synths started losing their way a bit. Just love the old analog sound but I do love digital too, just think it all went over the top with digital.
