- One very unmistakable monument dating back to pre-historical times is the great Brownshill Dolmen the east of Carlow town.
The tomb was built between 4000 and 3000 BC. It is distinguished for the flanking of its burial chamber with two large upright stones (orthostats) supporting the granite capstone (roof) of the chamber. The
Brownshill Dolmen has a granite capstone weighing over 150 tonnes, making it the largest of its kind in Europe. The massive capstone rests on two portal stones which flank a door stone and slopes downwards to the west where it rests on a low boulder.
The magnificent capstone has excited the interest of many antiquarians and tourists down through the years and it is thought that religious rites, possibly even human sacrifice, were performed there for four and a half thousand years (2500 BC).

Incredible
It is, I actually have never stood near one, I can't believe the size of it
Yes what a headstone. Thanks for sharing and see you soon
Thanks Sally
Fantastic sue thanks so much. Hope you and GV are ok and well. God bless you both. Xxx❤
You are so welcome
In your words… “would you look that”❤❤
Perfect comment
Wow!! That is amazing!! How in the world? It must be magnificent up close!!
It is Brenda, in my own words, WOW!!
I was hoping Sue would stand next to it while IE takes a pic just to get some perspective. Don’t worry Sue, it won’t fall over! Thank you for choosing this stunning photo to share. 😊❤️❤️❤️
Hello Sue - GREAT video! I didn't know anything about this - so it was fantastic news and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole video. BUT ....
*Pause the video at 2.51* and look carefully at the top (HUGE) stone. I see a face on it. I saw it instantly. I see the eyes, and it seems to have it's mouth open. I do believe that I can even see some teeth!
Now .... *Let the video run until 3.06 - and pause it again* ...
Tilt your head over to the right - as if you're trying to touch your shoulder with your ear.
Then look at that large dark patch on the stone/rock - and let your eyes walk around that dark patch until you begin to see another face - in the very white patch slightly to the upper right side of the black patch on the stone, with white hair (looks like the wind has blown his wispy hair) - again, I can see eyes and, again, it looks like his mouth is open. He looks a bit cross over something or other.
Hope I've explained what I'm seeing, and how to find those faces, properly.
GREAT video Sue and GV. Thank you so, so much for this fabulous bit of education!
Sending much love ~ Cobs. xxx
I'll take a look 👀
Short ,sweet but super interesting. Thank you for taking time to visit it for us. 💖💖💐💐🏆

AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ ,keep up the great work.
Thanks x
Fascinating! Thanks for taking us, Sue.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video❤ impressive tomb
It sure is
Amazing! Thanks for taking us along, Sue! Cannot imagine how they moved it and set it up on the other stones.
Right?! Crazy to try understand how they did this
Total guess but I imagine a team of horses or oxen! Not only is that huge and crazy heavy, not sure how humans alone could get their hands anywhere on it to grip it.
Wow! The oldest graves I've clapped on eyes on here in Honolulu were from the 1800s. The first people who would become Hawaiians arrived here a "mere" 1,500 years ago. They were followed by the Tahitians about 500 years afterward. The bones, or "iwi", of all these ancient Hawaiians are regarded in highest esteem here and are not to be disturbed. Anyway...mahalo for showing us yet another gorgeous and historical place. Aloha!
Thank you so much 💓
Wow ! Very interesting ! Thanks !
You are welcome!
Wow, how amazing, thank you so much for sharing.😮
Glad you enjoyed it
I wish we had the time to check out this kind of burial. Went to other burial sites but they were mounds or other types. Only saw this kind at the Archaeological Museum exhibits. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks Sonny ❤️
That is a super cool grave, I have never seen anything even close to that. Well done and shared.
Awesome❤️Should have had GV stand next too it so we could get an idea how big it is❤️ Some of those places are to far from the road. I never would have made it. Glad you are in great shape❤️
Thanks BBrenda, this one is easier due to a lovely maintained path, others are not so easy
Just want to say love your channel. Thank you for the time you put into it.
I appreciate that! Thanks
Time Team fan here and I really like this short. However, I would be nervous to stick my head under there. I know it's been like this for thousands of years but with my rotten luck....lol
Lol Yada, I never even thought of that 🤣
Getting the stone there maybe used rollers, but as for standing it up ,mmmmmmm???,anway thanks for the video, short but sweet
Take care,stay safe,from ballarat in Oz,👋👋🙏🙏👍🇦🇺
Thanks Peter ❤️
Great video very interesting x
Thank you!
OMGoodness. It is so large and yet it rests on much smaller boulders and smaller rocks! I can't believe its age! It is incredible to be that old! I have never seen anything like it! Thank you Sue!
It's so cool to just stand there
Very interesting and amazing 👍👍👍
Thanks Jim
That is simply amazing!! The way it sits on the 3 stones underneath. This is a mind boggles???!
Couldn't agree more
Wow, that is very interesting and unique. How do you find these places? You and GV find some great places to visit and explore.
Thanks Becki, there are a few dotted around Ireland and this one is probably the easiest to access
@@SerenitySueGraveyards very cool
Wow!! What an AMAZING find!! I've NEVER seen anything quite like this!! It must've taken a LOT of manpower to build!! XXXX ❤👍🤗💞💖💪
It's so cool Nadia
@@SerenitySueGraveyards You guys ALWAYS find the cool stuff, Sue!! XXXX 💖❤👍💞🤗
Amazing how they done that😮😮
It really is
HI THERE SUE know that place well well done as usual
Thanks John
Wow it is so big love the video 😮
Thanks Kylie ❤️
Could they do radar or x-ray to see what is there underground.
They could, I'd say, I've no idea why they haven't tried that here
Nice neolithic site. However, to truly reflect Irish heritage, there should be a Guinness tap mounted near the monument. Nice find Sue. Any standing stones near you? Cool.
Haha John, can you imagine lol
Maybe they made some kind of block & tackle pulley system to move that rock.
I can only imagine, cows pulling these big rocks and boulders along tree trunks to move then and then as you say a pulls system to lift
Wow that's amazing! I wonder if my Carlow ancestors built that 😊. Thank you for showing us. x
Imagine that toms, any builders in the family??
That was my next guess Sue! 😊 Very interesting video...keep em coming! 😮
Thanks Kris
This is amazing to see Sue and GV. Thank you for taking us with you. Beautiful area.
Our pleasure! It was so cool to stand there
Lovely jubbly
How's she cuttin Donall, any craic?
@@SerenitySueGraveyards she cutting with hedge clippers, the craic is 90, dunno if its mph or kph though:) yourself?
Wow! 😱That's cool!
It's hard to actually stand there and scratch your head and ask how?
That's incredible
It really is, amazing to stand there
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yup
They were amazing workers back then. My thought is they picked that site due to the large stone. Some how lifted it and stuffed smaller stones under until they could do whatever they needed to do. Still its so impressive! Thanks Sue for bringing us along! God bless you for sharing.
Thanks a million
@rte64rte I have a similar theory. Bit by bit they dug holes and put rocks under it . when that was done the inner earth was removed. Some of these ancient graves were coved over with earth after the body was laid inside but of course over time wind and rain would erode it away. Any way just a thought 😊
I watched again and it does seem to sit in a depression in the ground. Also there's two large rocks on one side that could have fallen over.
Wow very interesting just amazing how did the do that? God Bless thank you. 🙏❤️
Good question Judy, blows my mind
Your videos are so beautiful but a little long this could make tired , take care and thank you Sue , Saad, Baghdad, Iraq
Hello, most of my videos are 30 mins long but I'm there over an hour filming ❤️ hello Irag, love from Ireland
Hello Sue. I visited that dolmen in June 1970, when no one could tell me where it was. I asked the local postman, who did not know but gave me directions to some other wonder ten miles away. I just found the photo with my bicycle lent against one of the support stones. There was no tarmac path and fences back then, nor did folks have to sanitize everything and provide a car park.
It's sign posted not and all
Take care both of you 👍 thanks for sharing im from England kent love watching your videos thanks
Thanks Shel ❤️
Magnificent! You can only wonder how they got that huge stone to tip up like that, Thank you for showing us this wonderous grave site.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow it’s amazing. And mind blowing how in the world was it made. ❤❤
It's crazy to even try think
Fascinating! How did they manage to get that capstone into its position? Thank you very much Sue and GV, for a very informative video. Have a great day 😊
Our pleasure!
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Thank you very much for getting back to me.
👍👍👍
✨🏴✨😳✨🤯✨.
Thanks
Thank you so much Hazek, really appreciate it 😊
Where did it come from!??! It’s so flat, the rest of the area. That’s beyond Amazing!!
Guess that Scottish friend was true saying that USA history is your all’s Current Studies. (He meant everything across the pond.) A kinder people I’ve never met than the Irish! ☘️ 🇮🇪
Thank you so much 💓
It's like Stonehenge, how on earth did they get it there? Do you know if GPR has ever been used around it Sue, to see anything below? GV could've stood next to it for a size comparison, lol. Loved this one. Thank you. Deb of Oz XXX
Thanks Deb, as far as I know nothings been done here, now I'm wondering why haven't they
Didn't want to end up like a pancake 😂
Really cool, wish this kinda video had more views because I find the standing stones and hinges rather fascinating. One of you should have stood next to it in-frame to give us a better idea of the scale.
Thanks
Incredible! I love this. I wonder where they got that big stone in the first place, how did they get them all there, and how did they watch it.
It's so cool, we wondered exactly that on our way back to car
Very interesting !! At 2 min and 16 seconds, there is a stone there that almost looks like it had a face. Were there some sort of statues there at one time? Love your channel !
Someone else said the same, interesting, no, no statues, it's has been exactly the same for 5000 years
@@SerenitySueGraveyards interesting. Perhaps its just a freak of nature rock. Have a wonderful day !
@wickedfae69ify I can see the face, crazy
@@SerenitySueGraveyards thank you for taking your valuable time to answer 😀
So interesting 🧐. Did they bury them in one big hole? I wonder if there are burials in the surrounding area?
Yes below that part, unfortunately they haven't excavated the area so we don't known bur they have on other ones in Ireland and found remains, ashes and pottery
Wow, Sue, this was very cool! I am surprised that they have found remains at other sites after 5000 years. Bone does disintegrate eventually. But just thinking about how old this burial site is is JUST WOW!
You normally read the names of the people buried there. Not this time.
No names unfortunately but it's absolutely amazing
I want a stone like that in my garden. When my husband found out the cost he ran screaming from the room yelling nooooo
🤣🤣🤣
Wow, the Person that Built It must have really cared for the person that's entered there.
Locals lived, worked and died together in close proximity and all of the area would be buried there, some were used as sacrifice and religious rites
✨🏴✨🥰✨👍✨♥️✨🤗✨.
@Serenity Sue @Gv they didn't use Cranes just muscle power
Amazing
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Same wiv Stonehenge
@Danno1983 and the pyramids

Loved this video , I love anything pagan or Celtic. I have visited many site in the UK and Republic of Ireland. 🐨🥰
Wonderful! Thank you ❤️
Remarkable !
Well advanced technology & we have no clue how they did it !
Loss all the knowledge from the past !
It's like everything technology has destroyed so much of our thinking brain
Wowsers very interesting
Glad you think so! I was blown away just standing there, the size of that Stone
That is so amazing id love to know what is under there and how many, fascinating
You and me both! It's absolutely massive too, couldn't get over the size
What is the proof that this was a burial place and how do they know the dates? To me it looks like a very large stone was maybe dumped there during the ice age? The thing about history is that we are supposed to believe that someone, somewhere was able to translate something written long ago in a language that they were just guessing at.
We have several of these in Ireland which were excavated where remains were found and things like pottery, etc the bible was wrote in different languages, how was stonehenge made? Newbridge etc how do we know?
Wow! This is ancient! It's the oldest I've ever seen. ❤
Very cool, lots still remain in Ireland
Aliens
That did cross my mind lol
How the heck….😮
Amazing
My DNA says my ancestor s were there when Hegstone was erectit
Wow
You think that's big. The one in Co louth is the size of a bus .
Really, WOW!!
How did regular humans do that
Crazy to think
There were giants back then - Nephilim produced by fallen angels with super human strength. Probably built with their help.
There is a story of a giant making these
My Ancestry DNA says my ancestors were there when hedge stone went up
