Erin, hearing this acronym reminds me of the system Nintendo tried to bring over to the U.S.: the Advanced Video System, which was the precursor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), but it also had such additional accessories as the light gun, a computer keyboard, a music keyboard, wireless control pads and a data cassette recorder (which would have come in handy for games such as Excitebike, Wrecking Crew and Mach Rider). Its only appearance was at the Winter 1985 Consumer Electronics Show (or CES) in Las Vegas, but because many buyers were still having cold feet after the video game crash of '83, it was never put into full production. One prototype was produced and still exists in New York City.
Only the light gun among these extras carried over into the final NES that came out in October 1985 in New York and February 1986 in Los Angeles, then elsewhere in June 1986.

I don’t have a AVS, but I did recently go in and refurbished the pin connector on my NES. It was a bit of a scary experience. I had to take it apart twice before things were working. Was sweating bullets when I snipped the lock out chip too.

Couple tips for taking stuff apart:
    1. Stick a magnet on the screwdriver and you should be able to lift the screws out of the holes once they're completely unscrewed.
    2. Sometimes screws don't want to come all the way loose. It's like the last couple threads at the tip catch on something. To avoid losing the screws when you flip the device over, stick a piece of tape over any hole that still has a screw in it.
    3. Most things are held together with screws but about 99% of things are also held together with snaps. To quote Spock: "It is not logical, but it is often true." :)
    4. When possible, you should test it before putting it back together, or at least before putting the screws back in. Then if there's a problem, you don't have to take it all apart again.

Thanks, I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the top of the case off without pushing in on the controller ports. My AVS's pin connector was so tight that it actually broke the plastic on the inside of a game because of how hard you had to push it into the system. I ended up using a dental pick on the pins inside to push all the connector pins further apart and it no longer holds a death grip on all my games 😌

Great video! As you figured out the plastic removal mod didn't have to do with reassembly fit, but to do with the "new" pin connectors still not contacting all green strip carts. The plastic removal allows the cart to seat further in making all the green strip carts playable. Cheers

Ah yes, the “green stripe” problem. I read up on this a while ago. It seems a number of games produced around 1989 suffer from this. I got my NES in 1989, so a I have several carts like that. Never had problems on the NES, but when I got a Retro Freak last year, the cartridge adapter I had wasn’t working with those carts. Eventually I resorted to getting a security bit screwdriver so I could open the carts and stick the board further into the adapter, which fixed things.

Take the other three pads off your AVS, so it sits level. Then, order replacement pads (they are just bits of foam with adhesive to stick them to the bottom, activateable by removing a strip of protective paper. Should be under $7, for a big stack of them, delivered.

I should invest in an avs. I don't want to use my famicom but I want to play them games. Plus it's HDMI. Also you don't want to use the wrong screwdriver when screwing. You could strip the bolt and could never get it out without cutting it out.
