That was really cool. I saw a video of a Menios Pasialis - Playalong - Festival De Ritmo and wondered how he could play like that. This is a great tool to get there!!
Very original, musical, progressive and pertinent lesson. Bravo! How to get out (with the use) of military rudiments to finally play MUSIC (compositions, complex rhythms, melodies, accents, orchestration, independence, listening, counterpoint, ornementations, rests, syncopations, etc. all the little concepts that makes natural beauty, because life is complexity) not sport, speed, technique and pure gesture coordination! For beginners advanced players. A good logical progressive development of the "hits" lesson from "The next step", second pedagogical video (with book) by Dave Weckl (I gave mine too in my methods). Good reference, for sure, "Festival de ritmo". Afro Latin jazz is the summit of drumming art, no doubt. Nice subltle dynamics, improvisation, feeling and flow in your playing too at the end (excellent demonstration). I say it as an author of awarded drumset methods and drums teacher myself.
I'm kind of a beginner, can someone help me out? What does he mean when he says "kicks"? Is it just accents with the band? Cuz to me he's not actually kicking on the bass drum?
+Yutong Sun you got it. talking about hits/kicks (with the band) in this context is the same thing. I'm not too comfortable with all his specific terminology either (horn blasts), but understand that the lingo might differ depending on where you're from and things like that.
.....Very nice lesson Jay!.........I think the viewers should gain a great deal from this! Sincerely, Todd Walker

+Lokk9 is correct. When I say "Kicks," that is a western term for accents with other instruments... in this example, horns.
