In Living Color - BOLT 45 COMMERCIAL!!! (VERY RARE - Shown On Broadcast TV Only Once!)

  • On the May 5, 1990 broadcast, Keenen Ivory Wayans did a take-off on a Billy Dee Williams "Colt 45" commercial (in which the purpose of the beverage is to get your lady friend wasted) that ended with a woman (played by Kim Coles) passed out on her back on a dining table, and "Billy Dee" moving in on her unconscious body to have sex with her.
THE "COLT 45" SKETCH WAS SEEN ONLY ONCE DURING THE ORIGINAL BROADCAST. The sketch was omitted from repeats because some felt it was MAKING LIGHT OF DATE RAPE.
The Season 1 DVD set of In Living Color, did not include the "cut" sketch from the pilot. THIS SKIT WAS CUT BY FOX CENSORS, and the necessary modifications were made to the master tape. But Keenen "accidentally" mixed up the masters, and the original master was broadcast.
THAT SEGMENT HAS NEVER BEEN BROADCAST SINCE, NOT EVEN IN SYNDICATION, ON FX OR BET!
It has been replaced by "The Exxxon Family" (a fake promo for a sitcom about a clumsy Exxon boat captain) in syndication and DVD box sets.~ Wikipedia
(But fortunately, UncleBernie2 video taped this episode of "In Living Color" the day the original "Bolt 45" sketch was broadcast and saved it for many years just for your entertainment pleasure. SO ENJOY!!!!)

A lot of people totally missed the point of the skit. It was mocking the commercial that was implying that if you use Colt 45 you will definitely get lucky..."it works every time". It is not saying that date rape is ok or funny. It is making fun of a product that is implying that its use will get a girl drunk enough to have sex with a guy. The skit is commentary on a real ad campaign and how messed up its message was.

Quite a few years ago, Keenen said in an interview that this spot was cut from the show by S&P (the censors) prior to broadcast (the leg throw while passed out drunk was considered too blatant and obviously non-consensual), and a new tape was made with a replacement spot. Apparently, since both tapes were labeled identically (tape number, date of broadcast, etc.) the wrong tape was delivered and aired for the East Coast feed. They (Fox) caught the mistake and retrieved the correct tape, so the West Coast audiences never saw this spot. So Fox never considered this to be part of the episode, since it was never supposed to air. And this was indeed the very first episode of ILC.

Such shows like "Saturday Night Live" would just outright find themselves in hot water if they were to allow something like that to be aired on television these days. And besides, we REALLY are living in much more different times where one huge offensive joke can get anyone in trouble, so to speak.

Funny stuff for and at the time. The problem with this isn't even about sensibilities of today. It's had to get this joke when it's original reference is so many years from now. At the time being a Colt 45 parody was relevant being that the Colt 45 commercials were still very fresh in the target audience's mind and still part of it's memory. I think at the time this aired Colt 45 commercials were pretty much not running anymore, if they were they weren't seen as much as before. The thing that has me going is the fact that it still sells. Colt 45, that is.

But dig: what were men & women doing with alcohol ANYWAY? GETTING IN THE MOOD!
It was associated with sex a lot. Wine, beer, "Strawberries & Hennessy", "Crown Royal on ice"...whatever. What, are they mad because the truth came out? Personally I always thought it was weak if you had to get a woman "in the mood"="under the influence" just to get her naked, but that's what went on before I was here & it still goes on.

This was a parody of guys like Billy Dee Williams and Fred Williamson who were black actors that influenced others. It was about malt liquor and it being the opposite of classy.
All the PC people from this generation mention Bill Cosby? I don't see the woman in the parody as a victim. All I see is a humorous bit making fun of the malt liquor marketing towards black people.
It's really funny and over-the-top when they get to the table part. The part about I knew she wouldn't refuse me does have a whole different connotation in this day in era.
I am sorry that life has come to this.

Say you can't joke about something because it's not funny. Comedians run into that all the time. Like rape. They'll say, "you can't joke about rape. Rape's not funny." I say, "f... you, I think it's hilarious. How do you like that?" I can prove to you that rape is funny. Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd. - George Carlin
