Follow along as I look at two ridiculous videos that use numerology to "prove" the bible, god, and divinity. In this episode, I will walk you through biblical and canonical history that helps show how fallacious these claims are and point out the logical fallacies along the way. Plus I will show how easy it is to replicate these bad arguments with examples of my own.

There is a "spoof" law of mathematics, called the "Strong Law Of Small Numbers", saying: "There aren't enough small numbers to meet the many demands made of them."
Which basically means: small numbers will show up in many more situations than large numbers, just given their stochastical prevalence.
And if you now assert some non-mathematical significance to numbers... you get numerology.
This is a wonderful explanation. Thanks for sharing.
oh man, this was brilliant. Your "fake" examples were so good. Well done, dude!
Hey thanks so much. Was actually kind of fun to bs it so easily.
"You can do this with anything." - My favourite case is from Cornelis de Jager, a Dutch astronomer who made fun of this whole numerology bullsh*t by taking the Dutch _bicycle,_ taking a few random measurements of it and calculating a whole plethora of values out of it (cosmic constant, light speed, ratio of electron to proton, ...), and then sarcastically arguing that the designers of theDutch bicycle could not possibly have known all those very specific numbers, so the thing must have been built by aliens 🤣
Love that!
Welcome. Lots of new people here today and excited to have each of you here!
Pin your comment if you want everyone to see it. 👍
Appreciate that. Sometimes i do. Other times i just let what people like rise to the top. But I will if its something i really want people to know.
I love how you have to add all the chapters and then subtract one to make it work. Gods perfect proof of perfection requires that you subtract one.... yeah.
lol, love this response.
It has been my experience that anyone with just a basic understanding of math can “prove “ anything that they want. Numbers are so basic to humans that they were the first things written in the ancient world. Thanks for sharing that so-called proof of god.
My pleasure. That middle chapter video has been gnawing at me for months. Like numbers aside. Just look into the cannon history etc.
More generally, here's something to keep in mind whenever you see an amazing coincidence: There are 8 billion people each awake for something like 50,000 seconds a day. One in a million events are commonplace, and even one in a trillion events happen every day, to someone somewhere. There are so many opportunities for coincidence that the most amazing coincidence of all would be if there were no amazing coincidences.
As for numerology, anyone who plays with numbers knows how easy it is to invent "amazing" examples. How many attempts, how many hours, were spent on things that didn't work out as nicely as the one little gem you choose to display?
Yes! Love that all. Give me all the data, facts, math!
Well done, as usual! This numerology nonsense makes me equally amused and furious. It's so silly but when they latch onto it and use it as their "proof" then the chance to speak rationally is out the window. I think that's the part that makes me feel upset--the impossibility of a human to human conversation when someone holds these beliefs.
Yes exactly! This one is silly but its the same as all the other nonsensical beliefs that we are supposed to respect. Nope.
I would love to see how the same Christians debunk "proofs" like these in Quran!
I've heard about all that numerology garbage back in the mid to late 70s. Even then, I thought it was dog squeeze. I still do.
Congratulations on your first 1K subs. I think your channel will grow fast.
Thanks, Jeff. Appreciate that and you being part of the early group here.
20k in 4 months? Wow. Congratulations
Thanks so much. It has been really cool to see this kind of growth. Very grateful.
There are two instances of confirmation bias that fit together in a positive feedback loop. There is cherry-picking/proof-texting where one deliberately digs up this material to build a case. The person who consumes this information is now primed to register the material as significant whenever it appears in their experience at random. This is called selective perception. They are now more likely to seek out more such confirmation. Q-Anon is one area where this feedback loop has gone completely off the rails.
Oh thanks for sharing. I love learning these kinds of details and having the vocabulary to articulate them better.
Barbara Kingsolver did something like that with her novel "The Poisonwood Bible".
This reminds me of all the email chain letter "proofs" that would float around in the 90s and early 2000s that my dad would print out and share with me. Man did I eat those up. They were so fantastical and cool and my dad was sharing it to me so it must be true.
So much sense here, thanks! Friends of mine share this kind of stuff a lot… they also do this with ‘magical thinking' about words… but I'm a linguist (as in language scientist) and I know they are rubbish takes and a misunderstanding of the Bible.
Thank you and oh man, with your background in sure that just drives you nuts to see words so carelessly used and obviously incorrectly. Thanks for being here.
You see this done with even greater fervor with Muslims. When addressing an English speaking audience, they will still quote the Qur'an in Arabic, at length, followed by the translation. There is no need for this as the people in question cannot understand the language and just disconnect.
I could understand it if it were a matter of discussing a particular term or expression in the original but that is not it (although that does happen), the Arabic text gets quoted because in itself in holds some kind of magical property independent of actual meaning.
Some even claim people have been converted by having the Qur'an in Arabic recited at them...when they do not understand the language. The actual words in the text- more than what the text actually refers to- is what matters. Signifier triumphs over significant.
I’m embarrassed but I had used that Psalm thing way back when I was a fresh believer in college as a Facebook status. I got a lot of likes and comments. I’m cringing 😬 thinking about that. I’m glad I saw through the bs
Ha. We all have embarrassing religious pasts here. You’re in good company.
This was fantastic! But I fear you'll get many Christians in here saying that's obviously nonsense, and it wont land on them, that its just as flimsy to believe in the magical properties of blood spilled by a man who is both god and human and was born to a virgin, etc etc etc.
Yes, this is the point for sure. Hopefully looking at something so clearly fallacious can then help some people examine their rather odd beliefs. This happened to me big time.
Great video Brandon! Your fake examples were spot on. Numerology has always bugged me. I remember many years ago when the Bible Code book was all the rage.
Oh yes i forgot about that. Its sitting on my shelf right now. I should have used it in the video.
Man, you know your stuff. Awesome job! My deconstruction began, as many have said, by reading the Bible. Was on deployment in Baghdad circa 2004. In down time, I started reading. After several months and reading most of the Old Testament, I had more questions than answers. Second part of deconstruction came from a Banned From The Bible series on the History Channel.
Prior to that series, I had no idea how the Bible was constructed. Thought it was infallible, inerrant, and dictated by an All-Loving, All-Powerful God. Entire deconstruction took over 10 years, but it began with a simple read.
Thank you so much! And man thanks for sharing. Its amazing how long we can go not understanding.
I remember watching a video of inspiringphilosophy going into mental gymnastics with this numerology topic in order to justify the ages of the patriarchs... crazy
Ill have to find that
@@MindShift-Brandon it's in his series on Genesis
Hey, here after the shout-out in the Psalms SBS.
I never really understood christian numerology. My ex's aunt was really against any sort of magic, witchcraft, fortune telling, tarot, etc. She said all of it invites demons and evil spirits. But I was never able to understand the difference between all of those things, and the numerology-based conspiracies she shared with everyone and literally preached about.
Appreciate you checking it out!
Like you, the Bible was one of the biggest reasons I deconverted, and it had several reasons behind it.
First, there is that whole different versions and thus different books, number of books, number of chapters and verses, and overall lengths between them. So whenever they claim that any Bible is the "true word of God," I have to call out how exactly their belief differs from someone else's about their own (and likely different) Bible. And of course, spoiler: there is no difference save for the smallest - and thus most insignificant - of name/term-swapping.
Second, there is the whole process about how the different versions came to be. I was raised Catholic and was sent to nothing but Catholic schools, but my favorite teacher back in high school was an ordained Western Orthodox minister, and he had the Western Orthodox Bible, which had a few more books (I cannot remember how many, as the last time we spoke was about 15 years ago, he was already getting up years after having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and there are too many different versions to narrow down which it was at this point). That difference always... not so much bugged me, but more like niggled in the back, just keeping any fundamentalist or literalist interpretation at bay. I suppose I should also mention that the high school's theology classes approached Christianity, Catholicism, and the Bible more like secular scholars rather than prospective clergy going through Seminary (though there was still some of the latter), so the high school, intentionally or not, kind of set me up to eventually become an atheist.
Third, around this time, I was becoming a fan of comedians like Lewis Black and George Carlin (and I have been one since I graduated from high school), and I will say their material on the Bible, Christianity, and religion in general speaks for itself.
Fourth, though I learned of this much later, around the time of those councils that hashed out the NT (it might have been the same ones you listed, but I am not sure), the way it happened was... the overseer of the council(s) locked everyone in the building and would not let them out for anything until they reached a final decision. That decision was not reached until days later, and when they did, they were about to starve to death, which means that they were in a mental state that - I would like to think that you and I would agree about this - is not exactly conducive to rational or even coherent thought.
So yeah, all of these apologists claiming that the Bible is actually true, well, to borrow from Lewis Black's book, Me of Little Faith, their words, to this day, fall on ears that go from deaf to deaf-er. For them, my ears function much like gunshot earmuffs, where they have microphones to allow for normal speaking while wearing them but still cutting out any particularly loud noises they detect (like gunshots).
Love this. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. I relate big time. And man carlin could turn anyone, am i right?
@@MindShift-Brandon You should have seen my parents' faces when they heard me listening to Carlin's bit on the Ten Commandments, particularly the segment on the 5th one. Let's just say that they were... less than thrilled about his observations.
I can only imagine. But maybe similar to when my mom found my eminem cd

So happy to see how your channel is growing, Brandon!
Thanks man, getting there!
We would expect symbolism to cluster around 10 and 12. Our number system is based on 10 of course, but many ancient number systems were based on 12. That's why a circle is 360 degrees. (Not sure where 40 comes in!)
A numerology practice that you didn't get into is gematria, associating letters with numbers, then adding up the numbers of words so that they associate with words of the same total. That's now become a QAnon thing, if you can believe it. The Hebrew language naturally connects numbers and letters, but for English, it's just silly. Someone explained to me that rabbis use gematria like a pun: a chuckling realization, not a divine revelation. Like saying "today is a gift, that's why they call it the present."
Finding the middle verse reminds me of Sunday school when we had to memorize verses, so we always picked the shortest: "Jesus wept." Great video! Thanks for the information!
Thank you for your info also. Love learning this.
When I heard about Dan Brown’s books about the DaVinci code and saw the movie I knew it was fiction and thought everyone else did too. Years later I heard some people thought it was real, I was amazed. People are such suckers for conspiracy theories! In recent years all that has been taken to extremes. Numerology is just more of the same. 🤷🏼♀️ I know we are wired to be pattern seekers but, no need to get wack-a-doodle about everything! I prefer reason backed by evidence - which the Bible is incapable of providing.
Well said as always. I wonder if we will ever evolve past these simple errors.
Hooray for mathematics!
We Americans call it "Math", but the British call it "Maths!"
Here's an example of bible math; Friday evening to Sunday morning = 3 days and 3 nights, but the best one is God not being able to count to one; 1 Day = thousand years. There are so many mathematical errors in the Bible, it's beyond me how anyone could take it's so called "numerology" seriously.
WHENEVER I hear a preacher shout "The Bible is collection of SIXTY SIX god inspired books" ... I think, IF, IF, IF, they had chosen 67 or 68 or 69 books back in the 1st or 2nd century, the same preacher would be shouting a different number.
LOL
Yup! Love this
My parents had 2 kids. I have 2 parents. Marriage is between 2 adults. Kids say their first words by 2 years. 2 is the 2nd most reoccurring factor in mathematics. There are 2 main celestial bodies we see in the sky. We have 2 of each limb. We have 2 eyes. See? Krishna has got to be the truth!
Now I understand why Krishna is blue and likes butter! 😂
Yes, this video was very interesting and enjoyable. Thanks, Brandon!
Thank you!
One of my "favorite" Bible numerology claims was using Psalms for prophecy. Since Psalms is the 19th book in the Old Testament, we'll associate it with the 1900's. Take a chapter like #48, and you now have a prophecy for the year 1948 (the year Israel was recognized by the UN). I think they also somehow tied chapters 67 and 73 to the 1967 and 1973 wars, and so on, then proceeded to make predictions going forward (through 2050 I suppose before you run out of chapters). Chapter 123 (2023) is very short, and I don't see anything resembling a prophesy of what happened in October 2023 when Hamas executed their savage attack in Israel. Maybe I just didn't try hard enough :^)
Keep going my brother. 😊
Numerology is a big thing with religion. Since the New Testament was written in Greek, the number 12 comes from Greek mythos. One will always find some borrowed numerology from different cultures.
As more cultures joined the Abrahamiac religion the more they adopt into the books.
Thats why the bible cant settle on the most important number.
I always found numerology an extremely weak arguement for God. There are infinite numbers between 1 and 2.
I love the topics you bring up. Its different and important for discussion.
Always appreciate the input, Peter. Thank you. And great points!
I would love to hear your take on the establishment of the canon. I was curious when the dead sea scrolls became public if any Protestant denomination would decide to reinstall the books in the old testament included in the Catholic Bible that are not in Protestant, as they are included in the dead sea scrolls.
Appreciate the watch and yes I will plan a video further into the canon!

I do love scientific math formulas, though, and how they are replicated in nature, like the Mandelbrot Set and the Fibonacci sequence.
Loved this. It is fun to see stuff like this debunked but it is also saddens me to see that many people seem to be impressed by numerology and such.
Yes. I feel that for sure. It should be the easiest thing to not believe. So if so many still do, makes somethings seem hopeless.
Love it when protestants forget that chapter and verse divisions were not original to the Bible
Or dont care to know so the math keeps working or just assume god divined it that way lol
666 is a holy number in the east. Infact, in Buddhism it represents the six senses, six sense objects, and the six volitions that connect the two… this is how we all interact with our world
I'm a new subscriber and I just started watching your videos yesterday I have to say I'm already hooked. I love every video so far. But I have a suggestion... May you please talk about near death experiences (when people die and claim to have been to the afterlife) I used to think they were evidence of God but I no longer believe them to be. May you give your opinions on this in a future video please?
Oh wow. So very kind. Thanks for that! And yes i have covered it on a video about hell coming up but plan to do a whole episode also.

Lol this time means actually laughing out loud! Brilliant.
I had the exact same reaction you did after watching that. Ugh! And then I immediately thought of all the people that it would be impressive to. I do get angry. I am one of those atheists that is angry about what religion does to people and how much harm it’s causing. I wish that religion(s) would die out a lot faster than they are. I doubt we’ll ever be free of them but I’m hoping that eventually, the majority of the population will realize, for GOOD reasons, that they’re not true.
Yes the irony is the more they lose in number and the closer the end comes, the kore fanatical snd destructive they will become.
@@MindShift-Brandon Absolutely. We’re watching it happen right now. Women’s bodily autonomy, LGBTQ+ community being targeted, book bans, etc. It’s scary and it’s only getting worse.
Of course, there's also the most famous biblical numerology. 666.
Yup! I play with that one a bit as you progress through the video.
It is an interesting coincidence but you know what’s I think maybe a bit more interesting number wise is that 6 is associated with the devil and 7 is associated with god so instead of having 77 books in the Bible there are now 66 books in the Bible does this mean it’s a corrupted book by the devil?
Nice video. Good explanation.
I heard today something similar about DNA, that if you juggle around the letters it spells YHWH.
Can you do a video on that?
Oh man i should have included that in this one. Its ridiculous! Yes. Will do.
Thankfully I didn't have to deal with this in my philosophy class but one of my friends said it was mandated on her exam to prove the existence of God using math.... Me being the smartass I am, I probably would have written 80085 or 42. lol If I felt edgy, maybe even 1337.
Good video, though you took it in a direction I wasn't expecting. If you want to go deeper, numbers and searching for hidden meaning has always been an important part within portions of Judaism and Christianity.
Around 25 years ago the Bible Code was a minor deal. With growing use of computers and the digitization of the Bible, especially 'original' translations or early copies, someone created an algorithm to search through the Bible to look for words in various patterns. Think of it like doing a word search game on a massive grid of letters comprising the Bible. New prophecies were discovered!
Even deeper and older than that though is the literal and intentional use of numbers throughout the Bible. You touched on it lightly. The Hebrews and Jews placed great importance on gematria and also inserted astro theology.
The ages of everyone pre-flood? 365 years. 777 years. Really? Yes, the years are incredulous, but there was additional significance to them.
That an algorithm found new word patterns in the Bible or that the Jews intentionally inserted special numbers doesn't make them more true than the absurd stuff you just rebutted, but it does show that the ancient biblical writers weren't just making stuff up.
As a work of literature and a study of ancient religion, there's plenty of layers to sift through.
The Bible still isn't reliable, true, or inspired though. 😁
For sure, and i remember the bible code craze. I really didnt want to go to deep on this particular topic as its so silly to begin with, but you are right Gematria could be its own and much longer video. Thanks for the insight and added context.
If it was the TRUE word of GOD, then why is there so much argument over what it means? If it was truly divine, it wouldn't need this much work to decode it if we're really meant to understand it.
Always on point!
How did you do this vid with a straight face😂😂🤣🤣
Lol!
Omg but what if the Antichrist does come from the chosen people!? You just predicted the end times 😭💀
Well done. My guess is that the authors (human, not divinely inspired) used numbers to make prophesy easier to swallow. They weren’t accidental. If you have 12 tribes of Israel, then you need 12 disciples to rule over them (sit in judgement on them) on their heavenly thrones. Matthew 19:28. Judas’s ouster may have required smiting of one of the tribes, unfortunately
40 years may just have been “a long time”. A generation, a major rainstorm, how long to wander in the desert
22.3758 +/- 0.666 years or days at 6.66 sigma confidence just doesn’t roll off the tongue. But it does tie in to the Book of Revelations
Have you checked the findings of the Russian mathematician Ivan Panin on Bible numerical patterns? You might be very surprised at what he found
I am aware and my only surprise is that anyone finds it reliable. His inconsistencies were tremendous, his selective interpretation is out of this world. The list of arbitrary assignments he made is faulty enough to disprove the whole thing right there, and the lack of peer review plus the opposite claims that so many others in his field have made make this at best, a better version of the same gymnastics done in this video.
@@MindShift-Brandon lack of peer review? Seriously? His peers couldn't fault his research..but you can? With what evidence?
Anyone ever found it funny how there are 66 books in the bible? What other number is that similar to... Hmm...
Indeed. Its a warning we should stay away!

Numerology may be the one thing less impressive than personal experience. At least some of the personal experience Christians describe would at least count as evidence if it actually happened as they describe it but numerology is just drawing yarn on pegs, on a board.
Your fake examples are every bit as attested as the "real" one and that tells you all you need to know about this "method". You can also do this with absolutely any text and the longer it is, the more combinations you can draw. Someone applied bible code, that is a variation on this theme, to Moby Dick and lo and behold, several patterns emerged. It is unavoidable that they should.
You said it! how others can still be deceived by this is beyond me at this point!
@@MindShift-Brandon I don’t get it either.
It may be a case of affording the bible, and the English translation(s) in particular, a privileged position. But still it boggles the mind.
The fact that many of these very spurious “revelations” they get by doing this wouldn’t work for the texts in the original languages more often than, nor in other translations, should be a hint, too. Or at least make them ponder.
Are these codes only meant for English speaking Christians?
The actual number “work” across translations but the whole “count x amount of letters/words” does not. This without gong into the different versions of the bible that make chapter counting entirely useless.
And given how the text in the original does have the chapter breaks they are using, as you pointed out, is another nail in the coffin.
well when they are presenting evidence, they cant even see basic problems or cant evade the simplest logical fallacies. Or they dont care, that is an option too, considering their target audience.
Let's have a look at his "evidence". Even if we take his numerology as face value. Are they so disconnected from world that they are not aware numerology is already being used for other holy books namely Quran. Even if you dont know with five minutes research you can find same numerology evidence for Quran, there are dozens of them. Same with other famous evidence for christianity. Like personel experience and miracles. Do they really think only christians have that kind of evidence? With their evidence they also happened to prove all other religions too. But no, with same evidence somehow only their miracles true, their personel experiences are real. Most of their argument cant even get past special pleading. Nowadays they cant even come up with a proper argument, they fail from the start. They cant even present with a challenge.
Have you ever encountered anyone who gave strong arguments for the existence of God Brian?
Its tough to answer. If any argument was really that strong, i wouldn’t be an atheist. I have heard better answers but none i think are super strong.
What about John Kostik's videos and all the cool math things that the bible does? And it doesn't mean it's not true if the math for this one specific canon didn't add up before. It would just be one of many, and why not believe the holy spirit didn't inspire this canon list? You have to believe that as a Christian.
there is only one reason that i believe that god exist and it is a simple reason ... something created this world and that something is unsearchable ... by the way numbers can nor explain god ... only love can ... no man can explain god ... just as no man can explain what is love and where did it came from ... if you find love then you will know that god is near even if people believe or not believe
Oy.
The symbolism in numbers and the words or phrases in other words & phrases is out of hand in some denominations. It's just using the Bible as a fortune teller (which is totally fine if you want to do that, but)...
Also, it's bad math. The math in the Bible that actually matters is the stuff they ignore, like the time frame for Jesus's return (within his direct apostle's lifetimes). How long the devil will rule the earth (dude's lease was up 1000 years ago, maybe more). etc.
It's a shame that you are a person with GOOD MORALS. Because with your talent you could get a job writing material 🤣for QANON!

So that you don’t end up creating a thought bubble, here I am, my friend! Up to this point, you have been content simply to devise images of God and interpretations of the Bible that are self-evidently nonsensical, and then you have proceeded triumphantly to demonstrate just how nonsensical they are. Great for clicks, of course, but is that the reason why you’re doing this? You’re so much better than this petty little game of “look at the last dim-witted take on faith”.
