I also play chess for the simple purpose of playing chess I appreciate that you don’t impose violence with commentary as almost all people do. Patrick, i'm so proud you won the game, it's awesome to see you get a Victory. I want you to look at the timestamp of 22:31 and recognize that amazing victory pose, as it is a very sweet moment VICTORY is awesome!! I'm so happy you won the game. Now that you're done celebrating, I just wanted to point something out that I think will help improve in your next games. If it's okay with you, I'd like you to go back and look at 7:39 In this position, you thought about taking the pawn, you also thought about defending against c5 so you could take the pawn. You then worked as hard as you could to take the pawn only to walk into a discover check. At 9:44 you lined up your queen in front of your king, which sat behind a bishop waiting to open a discover rook attack. When your opponent has a great position, A rook sitting behind any piece that can open up for a discover attack is a GREAT POSITION!! The goal should not be to take their piece and put your piece in danger, the goal should be to avoid their attack at all cost. SOMETIMES in very rare cases it's okay to violate this rule, but generally speaking it's not good, one should defend against this. And honestly imo the best move here was to simply castle...and get your king away from the attack. I honestly think to reach 2k, all you'd have to do, is look for these general attacks & defend against them instead of putting your pieces in danger. You found a BRILLIANT win, while behind in pieces, but you never had to be behind, had you not put your pieces in danger you would have crushed the entire game. I believe you can be a strong player, but the first step would be the fundamentals of not putting your pieces in danger, and building a solid foundation/structure for your attack. Because you proved you know how to checkmate, now prove you can do it without putting yourself in danger. Maybe just review what are strong moves a person can make in chess, pins/discover attacks/ double attacks/forks etc, and if you see them, because you did see it, just avoid it...just don't even put yourself in danger & you will get to 2k faster than I can finish typing this comment. I hope I helped & didn't just ramble off because i'm happy you won the game and i'd like to see you reach 2k gl on your journey looking forward to the next game :D
Thanks for the entertainment Patrick. These videos have become almost therapeutic for me as you always upload late at night when I’m unwinding. Keep up the good fight!
Hey Patrick, I recently found your channel and I’m looking forward to following along. I’m a lower rated player so it helps to hear you think out loud. Something I’d also find useful that you don’t have is just a little banner or overlay somewhere that shows your rating from the previous game and also your highest rating, I think that would really help tell your story and give a little bit of context to the journey for those of us who haven’t been following from the start.
@@chesswithpatrick Hey Patrick thanks for the reply! It depends how far you want to go with it but perhaps a weekly round up of your previous week’s performance and your take aways from it at the start of every video on Sunday (for example) would be a good idea? Indicate which videos include the weekly overview in the title would help as well. All just ideas though : )
Congrats on 500 days, and good game. Even though you missed the discovery, you made the correct decision to sac the queen for minor + rook, and you get the bishop pair, which gave you counterplay.
Congrats to your fifth centennial with a beautiful checkmate to top. I have very much enjoyed watching your chess journey, and I look forward to many more days to come. It's great to see you play your guitar, and I loved the impromptu song. The suit really ties everything together, and looks marvelous. Good luck to you on your journey, Patrick. Cheers.
good job keep doing what u were doing, and always seek for improvement. thank you for sharing this, people like me give this kind of video inspiration.
Hey Patrick looking good I see. I think there was a tactical defense move in 19:35 which is Bf6 and the idea is that if black did nothing Rook to the back rank check forces the king to move to h2 on the same diagonal as the queen followed by Be5 which ofc is defended by the rook winning the queen. But congratulations on your win.
I asked ChatGPT by what move do grandmasters usually castle by as black in the Caro-Kann? This was the response: In the Caro-Kann Defense, grandmasters playing as Black typically castle kingside (O-O) after completing their development. The timing of castling can vary, but Black often castles kingside by move 10 to 12, depending on the variation. For example: • In the Classical Variation (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 (or Nd2) dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5), Black often castles kingside around moves 8-10 after developing the knight to f6 and placing the bishop outside the pawn chain. • In the Advance Variation (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5), Black usually castles kingside after developing the knight to e7 (often after playing …Nd7 and …Ne7 to prepare castling safely). Kingside castling is the most common, as it secures the king and enables the rook to take part in the game along the f-file. *** Also after white plays b4 making his c pawn backward, playing the rook to c8 to pressure it makes sense. Besides castling, move your rooks to where they should go to help you in an attack and more importantly to help defend your position.
Congrats on 500 days and the win. I recently discovered your channel and it’s good. The engine said that your bishop move at the end was a mistake, but it ultimately led to your victory, weird, right? 😂
Putting your knight on F5 to trade knights wrecked your pawn chain. Instead I would have put it on G6 instead, then captured with the H pawn. That would have opened your rook up and you would have had a strong attack brewing on the king.
Day 500 magic! Good on you for sticking through it. I honestly think it's time for an AMA video. I'm sure people want to know a whole bunch of things related to chess, life, motivation, thinking, etc.
There was a brief period when Patrick was focused on opening development and he won some nice games. Unfortunately he seems to have regressed into pawn-napping queen excursions with the inevitable outcome for her majesty.
The best thing about your channel Patrick is that it's relatable for us casual chess players. Watching people like Hikaru or Danya is like watching professional sports. It's amazing and we all wish we could play like them but it's also unrealistic. Love it man you've become a part of my daily routine
Take a look at the latest slowbrah episode (ep. 57) on the Chessbrah channel. It's a Caro-Kann advance variation. I think you'll learn some helpful concepts about how he approaches the opening so that you can avoid situations like this one in the future.
Congratulation on your iron will to reach this goal. I'd recommend analysing every game and to invest more time into opening theory (sound openings). The Caro-Kann defence is fine. I've seen some Bf5 attempts against d4 (bad idea, due to Qb3 stuff). Some of the most sound approaches to d4 are the Grünfeld, or the Nimzo Indian Defense. Maybe work on some tactics too. I usually set my goals at 100 points at a time. Cheers (my ELO is roughly 1950-2000).
He does not need opening theory, he needs opening fundamentals. One can get to 2000, heck maybe even 2200, without ANY opening theory (et at. Hikaru Nakamura 2022).
@@jackweatherhead8171 I reached 2000 knowing only the first few moves of mainline Caro and London. You're absolutely correct, fundamentals and tactics are everything at this level. I get the impression that lots of lower level players these days know a fair bit of opening theory, so it's tempting to feel like you have to do it yourself, but honestly, just learn the fundamentals in order to survive the opening (and you gain experience of opening responses as you go), and then focus on tactics/middle-game stuff so you can wipe the floor with them. You're golden up until around 2000. You get it, sir.
@Perkshire exactly. Also, at 1400-1700 and maybe even beyond, people don't even play long moves of theory, so you're going to be in fresh positions in pretty much every game anyway
Thanks for sticking with me all this time! ❤️

if you try that I think they have f4 and then i'm not sure how you would proceed

I was going to comment the same, but there is indeed f4 😢

Great game Patrick! Like Ben Finegold says.... Your opponent could be up +5 but if they miss mate in 1 then it does not matter!
Nice one! Day 500 win with a queen sac. So cool to see you still going after all this time :)
