Actually glad there was no DX3. DX2 already went far from Spector's vision and being a console game didn't benefit. Could've gone worse, but eventually HR ended up being a good reboot.
Yup. I loved DX1. But DX2 was an obvious cash grab, and I doubt Spector had much involvement with it. Probably didn't help that Romero had become a loose cannon with Daik, etc. But hey, at least he funded Spector's Magnum Opus (which really separated him from Garriot, btw). The "it didn't fit into memory" explanation has to be bullshit. A skybox is one texture, adding two more buildings to it won't change how much memory it takes. Plus DeusEx uses Unreal engine which had no such limitations and unlike Invisible war it wasn't hamstrung by a console with little useable memory.
@@trevor_mounts_music I read that the work in progress-skyline in the skybox was full of copypasted twin towers. so when the final skybox was designed, the developers were so sick of the twin towers that they decided to leave them out. but on the other hand, it could always be a conspiracy.
Spot on. That explanation is the kind of hand wave answer you give to people who don't understand computing or games development. An extra few pixels on a low-res skybox texture really had to be cut back to save on memory? In a pc game made in the late 90s? Nonsense.
no, it's not a regular skybox. the skyline is a billboarded texture inside a projected 3D sky, which is how they get the moving clouds effect. it's already really big and including the twin towers would require you to make it twice as tall. i don't know where the explanation comes from, or if the devs actually said that, but i can imagine having extrmeely large spaces like this causing issues when compiling the map or maybe with the sky projection process. but again this quote is also hearsay. they might have just forgotten and adding it was more trouble than it was worth.
If I remember correctly, the games skyboxes are mirror images (because of memory), so if you add twin towers on one side of it, you will also have them on the other. Which would be too noticeable and that's why they removed them
