    Interesting tidbit with the Silent Hill Play Novel: In addition to Harry and Cybil's scenarios, there were four additional scenarios for the game that were only available through a download service that is no longer available, meaning- to my knowledge- that lore is gone forever.

    The failure spiral is one of the things that is good about 4 in a casual sense at least. Like it adds a lot of tension and fear to situations. I like a lot about 4, except how it plays.

    Hot take here, but I feel that after the first 4 games most of these games are D or lower. I can fully understand why a lot of gamers now of days don't understand why people like silent hills unless they dive the first 3 games. SH lives and dies by its horror aspect, story telling, puzzles and atmosphere. What game after the room hits one of those?
    As for silent hill 4, I love the story and all the details as well as twists and atmosphere but like you said its frustrating. If a horror game starts frustrating you, its done the worst thing the medium can do. Hitreg is bad not just with ghosts, however the Eileen AI can do really well depending on what you give her but I do not know how viable it is for a speedrun.
    Game suffers from a lot of issues, but does a lot right. It could of been a better game with more time in development adding say more areas, less backtracking, less frustrating glitches etc, Maybe cut the escort mission down a lot.

    Interesting tier list. Personally the one thing that got me was the mention of SH1's controls, and them being less snappy than RE by comparison. I played those games in order back when I first got into the series, and have to say that I hold the opposite view, in fact I think SH1 is a game that aged remarkably well from all points of view for a PSX title. The combat is fun, the controls, although tank, get the job done with ease, the camera has good angles and is very responsive to the player's movement, the atmosphere, the music, the horror especially (I consider it along with SH3 to be one of the scariest games ever made), it's just an all-around amazing game. In terms of ranking, I would actually even switch places with SH2 and put SH1 in the S tier instead. Yes, seriously. It just has better enemies and bosses, more environmental variety, and is way more terrifying and weirder than SH2 is at times in my book (for some reason even places like the weird sewers are still burned into my mind).
    But the controls, excluding the fact that they're tank based, feel much better than a lot of games from that era, and it's easy to engage or avoid combat as well as controlling Harry. They're "slower" than RE, but that alone doesn't also mean worse, and for the types of enemies and gameplay they have, they get the job done quite well. By comparison, I say even the gameplay aspect aged way better than old RE, which feels absurdly archaic and dated to me, the main reason why I will always choose the remakes over the originals, except for RE4 which I prefer to enjoy individually, as RE4 aged like wine.

I think eventually until SH2 remake comes out... i will buy the rest of the games in the series. Need to play them at least once. Unlike the Team Silent games. Which are probably going into the thousands played. lol. My top 6 at least i know what they are. 2, 1, 3, PT, Origins, 4.

    Your opinion on SH1 is basically what I experienced when I played it the first time. I ran around, was annoyed, was frustrated and then ultimately reached the point of "I don't think so", but came back a few years later and played it, finished it, loved it.
    It's one of those games that could be cranked up to 11 and reach RE2R levels of quality with a good remake.

    Hello Punchy, I've been watching some of your old videos after discovering your hilarious re2 no walk video. Great commentary as always! Laura Bailey voiced Claudia in HD collection, not Heather :) (I wrote it after watching hd collection segment, as I kept on I saw someone in your chat also said it). I agree, old Heather voice fit much better but there are some good performances in HD collection. One good change was redoing that robotic voice from the "spooky house" , new Douglas and Claudia voices are good as well. Btw, HD collection works much better now on Xbox Series consoles. It's still not as good as PC versions with mods/fixes for sure, but HD collection doesn't crash at all, works on stable 30fps/4k or 1440p depending on the model of xbox, has fast loading/quick resume etc (I've played both SH2 and SH3 a few times for achievevents - I managed to 100% SH3, but SH2 requires a lot of playthroughs and that 10 stars run which is probably out of my reach). I wish, it had also SH3 original voices as an option but at least xbox backwards compatibility improvements made it a much better experience on series s/x.

    Honestly I played Downpour as a teenager and watched you stream it and it genuinely is the one Silent Hill game that actively leeches itself from my memory. I actively struggle to remember significant portions of this game or what it's about. It does have really funny death screams though.
    This was a fun video, I will be annoying about it online to get other people to watch it.

    • @12ealDealOfficial

      I tried replaying Downpour once or twice since it also leeches itself from my memory. It is a bland game when it isn't offensively bad. But both times I got to the scene of Murphy boarding bus and instinctively started mashing start to skip the cutscenes, but the lag of the pause screen loading and the sound of prison bars slamming (you are being metaphorically trapped into watching that garbage) had me abandon the game both times.

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090
      @casanovafunkenstein5090 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@12ealDealOfficialI don't know if I'd really call it bland, so much as it's a bit underwhelming.
      There's a lot of interesting ideas, like the cops roaming the outdoor areas, the visual design of the otherworld areas (even though I have no idea what the clockwork symbolism is meant to reference. Maybe it would feel a bit less disconnected from the story if those sections weren't just spent running in a straight line from a glowing light. I had to check to see if I hadn't confused Downpour with Homecoming because that game actually features a watch as a significant item. I get the prison stuff but are they just basing the whole visual motif on a pun, because people in prison are 'doing time'?) and I do think that the twist is actually quite unique. The major issue with all of those good elements is that they never really felt like more than surface level ideas that should have been explored more.
      If they had done a bit more to develop their ideas, made the ethical choices a bit less intrusive, reimagined the enemies and mechanics to better fit the story (I feel like the story of a convict going on the lamb after a botched prison transfer avoiding police patrols and being stalked by a prison guard with a personal grudge against him should probably be a bit more focused on avoiding everything and finding routes around the environment that enable you to get between places without being caught. ThorHighHeels' video about Vampire Rain probably explains what I mean fairly well. Big, open areas that have dense pockets of unreasonably strong enemies that you can't easily get past with a focus on exploring the areas in order to find a way around them. Have that be the way that the outdoor bits work and make the indoors areas be a more traditional stealth game with less enemies and more areas to hide.)

    I agree on SH4, I didn't even finish it casually because it's so incredibly annoying. Downpour I actually finished, but hated its guts just as much as 4. The environments look nice I guess, but just about nothing works well otherwise. Combat is a dumpsterfire, guns have a disfunctional auto-aim that makes you miss anything that moves sideways at walking-speed or above. Running away works really well though because Murphy seems to get a comedic speed boost while doing so.

      The quality of the experience someone has with a piece of media doesn't really correlate with how much it sold.
      There are a lot of factors that influence the commercial success of a product and a series focused on an adult audience which focuses on making players feel uncomfortable isn't going to appeal to as broad an audience as something like Skyrim or Mario regardless of quality (I'm not making any statements about the quality of those games but they do serve to illustrate the kind of games that do achieve high sales.)

    • @xmumbyx1723
      @xmumbyx1723 10 месяцев назад

      I somewhat agree and disagree with you. Like, sales is def not an indicator of how much fun you'll have playing the game. But if you look back and think, Silent Hill was initially conceived as Konami's take on Resident Evil franchise and, yeah, its commectial success. It was a big deal then. It wasn't a small indie thingy, Konami paid astronomical money for Silent Hill 1 ad campaigns (true story - I first heard of Silent Hill when I was watching WWF in 1999). And i think the first one is still the most commercially successul entry in Silent hill series. SH2 - the beloved one - got owned by Metal Gear Solid 2 and dissapointed big bosses from Konami. After that, the sales' well run dry for Silent Hill. So yeah in the end, sales do matter. I really hope that SH2 remake will be a great game and make some good numbers in sales. @@casanovafunkenstein5090
