  • Christian Horner told Checo over the radio that his lap "was a strong effort", which is interesting considering he qualified behind both McLarens, a Ferrari, and was almost 8 tenths slower than his teammate. Anyhow, this animation showcases how that gap happened.

    I think that people forget that, with high downforce cars, the faster you go, the faster you go...until you go over the limit and you're done...When you go FAST you have more grip, you get more downforce, less tyre slip and lockups, thus better tyre temperatures...The gruesome nature of it is that the fast ones are rewarded with more speed, while the slow ones struggled with low grip, under and oversteer (depending on the car caracteristics)...So even a tiny difference can compound into a big difference (relatively of course, because even the difference between a great driver and a not so good one in F1 is just a few tenths of a second)...Those 3 tenths that Max made just by being braver on the brakes is the perfect illustration, he had more speed, and thus got rewarded with more grip, better rotation and most likely had a better tyre temperature to deal with the next turns...all those things compound and here we are...To be so close to those limits Max is flirting with losing the car, spinning out and crashing...In Free Practice sometimes he makes those "mistakes", then he clearly understands where the limit is and nails it...It's sad for those who have a hard grudge on Max and thus can't appreciate the beauty of his driving...It's inspiring really...Sometimes I watch Max racing and I feel like doing something better with my life, like studying or exercising...he really shows how incredible the human potential is, like any great athlete like Messi or Jordan.

Fast cars are inherently "loose" and difficult to drive, so you can adapt and handle it or you cant. Making a car more pointy or stable comes with setup, that's the only difference between the two cars. Later braking, not necesarily harder breaking, perez brakes harder but so damn early he loses the benefit of it.
    He lets go of the throttle at high speed entries, not committing to braking, but also not being on the power in feer of the back breaking out.
    Misjudges the amount of grip his car has in highspeed corners out of fear the rear end steps out... (these cars are less forgiving than previous models in terms of catching ur slide)
    Turns like turn 1, max turns in towards the apex agressively, then loosens his steering and lets the car drift towards the outside, then steers in again to shorten the distance without losing too much cornering speed.
    Checo on the otherhand is sloppy with it and he loosens his steering so much he has to turn in more than max, so he cant maintain the same speed towards the exit of the corner.
    and on the sharper corners, max apexes better, not always MORE but earlier.

      @rientsdijkstra4266 7 месяцев назад +1

      Again and again and again it must be explained to noobs like you. NO. Perez's car is NOT far behind Max's car. The problem with Perez is that he has the SAME car (as so many have explained by now... sigh). The RB is a very fast but difficult to drive car, with properties that Max likes, and Perez doesn't: it is very grippy and pointy at the front and relatively "loose" at the rear. Where that loose rear end allows the driver to rotate the car easily through the corner. Research shows that this is actually the fastest setup. The problem, however, is this setup is hard to drive and control and that only top level drivers like Verstappen (and for instance Schumacher) can be quick in this. Mediocre drivers like Perez need a more predictable "understeery" car to get to their maximum performance (which will lower because such an understeery setup is slower).
      So, to recapitulate: Perez's problem is that his style and ability is not suitable for the blisteringly quick but difficult to drive setup of the RB. Perez would NEED a different car, but he has to do with the SAME car.... Capiche?
      And about the politics: RB would like Perez to be FASTER.... His SLOWNES is a PROBLEM for them...

      No, the true caliber of a driver is seen when you can understand how to rate them by looking at how they manipulate their car!
      Max has the inner ability (like very few drivers, only 3, at their best, on the current grid can do such thing) to create for a fraction of second a flat platform in corner's entry and changes of directions (and that's not something that happened when he joined RB, it was already the case in his karting days) and shorten the corners thanks to his inputs, all of this makes him extend the straight and reduce tyre wear.
      His natural sensibility allows him to make small adjustments every lap, being pro-active ratter than reactive, unlike Sergio Pérez.
      I agree that the legacy of a driver is also judged by his longevity and how he was able to handle himself outside of a certain cocoon, but if you understand racing, you know that Max is a elite tier dude, just like Leclerc and Hamilton!

    The only thing Checo lacking is the team support... It's much more difficult to focus and maximise the achievement when being sabotaged and harassed by his own team every single weekend

      In any workplace, if you're an underperformer, the team environment sucks for you

      The team doesn't need to help Chéco if he doesn't help himself!
      Instead of focusing on what he can do with his driving style (and taking inspirations from Max and Newey), he drowns.
