  • Another tiny detail which definitely has to be considered. The tension within the bridge which can be avoided by fitting the bridge feels in proper way by considering some important aspects.

A while back I made a steel, an aluminum, and a brass bridge, just because I was a metalworker, and wanted to make excrutiating sounds. And make excrutiating sounds they did! They were incredibly loud. Ear-splitting would be a fit description. They should be a thing. Or not.

What else, apart from loudness? Did they sound metallic? Did it manage to sound like a violin?

used to make the same mistake.. fortunately nowadays all my bridges are fitted this way... check & double check the bridge feet contact with Top... also avoid the rocking motion due to uneven contact... I am still learning but Maestro is always correct !

I just started carving violin bridges about 18 months ago. I quickly identified this issue. It was so annoying, lol

My father did something similar to this on his violins and you are completely correct about fitting the bridge perfect. I wanted to ask you a couple things. First do you tune your plates before gluing together and what is your opinion on bending plates to minimize the removal of grain material by carving? Thanks

I use pink cerium oxide micrometer grade polishing powder for marking the feet.

Hello, Hello! Was this a Speedmaster video or a Bridge video🤣??? I love this Bridge wisdom. You might really like Cheryl Macomber, she is one of the fine makers in the USA now. Thank you for another master class Edgar!

That lipstick trick is similar to the method my dentist uses to fit a new tooth crown to the mating tooth surface.
Is it safe to put the lipstick on the varnish like that?
Can it be completely cleaned off without harming the varnish?

Really appreciate your explantion of bridge fitting for violin. Would lipstick leave oil residue? Would pastel be better? Ergo would not leave oil deposit? What about carbon paper? Still learning im just a novice. Your the master im the apprentice. Sincere thanks. Now to new topic. Did Stradivari use the words Fecite ? Are all violins with the word Faciebat merely copys? Would really like to know! Thank you Sir. Most greatful! Caio!😅

Good idea. Somebody adds a conical cavity, beside this.

What's the benefit of using the lipstick over carbon paper, if there are any?

When I do my own violin, I simply use sandpaper, rough side up, starting with coarse, ending with fine. I'm no luthier, but a luthier is often far away. Ole Bull did a lot of his own repairs on piano & violin. Now I want to duplicate my original nut, which was made of white animal horn (?). It had fallen off, and was lost, and Hans Weisshaar had made a new nut for me of ebony, in 1963. It's fine, of course, but I have wanted to restore the original look that it had when I received it from my Grandmother in 1956.

Dear Mrs.White animal horn. Try to get Ivory as the nut. I believe it is sonically superior. If you can't get that try Turkey bone. A guitarist recommended it to me once and I tryed it on my guitar. Seemed to work great! Find an old old billiard ball and have it band sawed in half. If it's real ivory it will saw through ok. It must be antique because the modern q balls are made of another material I believe. Learned that from my grandpa. Youl really have to hunt for an old one but youl get some ivory out of it. Hope this helps. I wouldn't mind an ivory nut and tailpiece liner myself! Happy searching!😅
