- Swiss built, 1971 Opel Commodore A series GS/E Coupe comes out after a full engine rebuild having been off the road during most of 2013. All journals reground, full set of shells, bores honed, new piston ring fitted, brand new cam(thank you Piper Cams(www.pipercams.co.uk/pipercams/...) for cutting from scratch using CIH 12v cam blank which they still hold!) and new hydraulic tappets, a complete set of new gaskets and engine repaint in original factory grey. A big shout goes out to Terry Potter for the excellent paint(www.precision-mc-paintwork.co.uk/) and T&L engineering of Elstow in Bedford(www.vintage-engine.net/) for all their help, in particular to Barry, who's advice and help was invaluable. From cold the engine now runs with 5 bar pressure and 3 bar when fully warmed up. This is the only Commodore A series GS/E in the UK and estimated as one of between 6 and 8 GS/E A series Coupes left worldwide. Winner of the 2011 Griffin Trophy at the VBOA national show in the UK and also Best in Show in 2012 at the Big Opels 20th anniversary meeting in Holland. Sincere thanks also goes to Ian Newnham and Ian Virco for their tireless support and help with work during 2013. The engine ran for the first time on 31st December 2013 - New Years Eve.
Loved the Opel's when I was in Germany in the 70's.
I loved these Opel cars when i was a child, Opel Rekord Sprint, Opel Commodore GS/(E), Commodore 6....I always flattened my nose on the window of these cars 😊
we had the same car here in Brazil, the Chevrolet Opala, but with 2.5L 4cylinder and 3.8/4.1L 6cylinder engines..
Realy neat, só beautiful in this scarlet red, many thanks for sharing! Salute from Brazil!
Such a beautiful example you have there Simon ! For someone on average salary this was/is one of the most beautiful European designs ever . A high end Opel Rekord !
Absolutely stunning! One of my dream cars! I’m just getting ready to rebuild the engine in my 1974 Opel Manta Rallye
What a machine, fantastic job there. These look like a scaled down 68-70 Dodge Charger. I have been intrigued with these ever since I took a photograph of a GS model in Blackness in Scotland in 1990, LGX 828K, well before they were sought after. I wish I could post it up here for you to see!
Weird that these came out before the charger
Thanks for the great feedback - good to know that currently(6/2/15) 48 people like the video and one, just 1 person(!) dislikes the car. I have to say I am not at all sure why this person does not like the car - I am confused...
I plan to bring the car through Germany this year on a road trip to take the car back to Switzerland, so this should be a great opportunity for more video I hope.
Hi Simon,
Lovely car :-).
I had one of these back in 1980, right hand drive exactly the same colour.
I failed my test and had it on L plates, same colour as car.....
The big ends were gone so I did a swap for an old Audi with twin headlights.
Best regards,
Bob.
Congratulations !!! ... incredible!!!!
Lovely car! I have an Opel GT that I'm fixing up, a Commodore A is like a bucket list car for me.
Beautiful car !
what a shining beauty, great stuff under the hood! it's only that in mediterranean leather wouldn't do, so I would opt for velours
Man! what a gorgeous car!
I have to admit I'm an American and I've never seen one before. I'm in love💕 Absolutely sweet ride 👍
You should look at the movie Cold Sweat with Charles Bronson. A massive car shase with a red Commodore just like this one!
This is the first time I've ever seen one of those. They remind me of a 71 Chevrolet Nova at first
Das ist sooo ein schönes Auto 😊❤❤❤
Beautiful! 😍😍
Was called Ranger SS in South Africa with a 2.5l engine
Stunning car

Very nice car. 5 bar oil pressure is good.
beautiful car. you can almost smell the gasoline. and the color is awesome.
Great job Simon, looks like new....i'm jealous :)
Thanks very much - this has been a long journey - I bought the car off UK EBay in 2006 for around £300 and have spent a lot more since then ;-) .....
Simon Downs now I'm jealous even more...I bought mine from german ebay for 2700 - cheapest I found in 2009...I have seen some pictures you put on NL forum....really nice work...i'm on the forum as well, but my jouney just started :)
Rado scarr That's great - let me know the thread and I'll keep an eye out :-)
très bien monsieur
Beautiful (Y)
Der schönste Opel überhaupt, 👍 👍👍
Bravo extra.❤️
Very nice car, I have a version produced by GM/Chevrolet in Brazil, from 1969 to 1992, basically with the same lines, just a few changes throughout the years. They used a GM 250 cid inline 6 cylinder engine, and a GM 4 cylinder 151 cid, This car was called OPALA = Opel (body) + Impala (engine). Today It's a collectible item.
Check my 1987 Diplomata model in my videos! 👍🏻
I owned a metallic blue Rekord Sprint from 1977 to 1982 reg no XYT 39H.It was given to me by my father as a present and first car on passing my test.He bought it from Elmsleigh Motors in Enfield London in 1971,It was lightly used and garaged and had covered 14,000 miles when passed to me and was mint.I changed the wheels to 15x7 Appliance steel spokes and General Grabber white letter tyres.I loved it,especially in the summer with windows wound down.It was a rare car then,i only ever saw one other in Essex,a yellowy mustard colour.Ipart exchanged it at 44,000 miles at Lewis Motors Tottenham for a Mk1 Granada coupe in Aztec Gold,a rare 4 sp manual KMJ 266N.I wish i'd kept them both. Are they still around ?
The roof line on this design is on par with the best from Mercedes. A very beatiful car.
Aus meiner Geburtsstadt 😢
there is one of these fantastic cars in the film cold sweat with charles bronson and james mason (car chase scene) think its nick name is the german charger that red paint looks mint
Sehr schönes Auto. Charles Bronson lässt grüßen, "Ein Mann sieht rot". 👍👍👍👍👍😀😀😀😀😀 Viele Grüsse aus Germany
Very nice car
great car its alot beter then it was new.
Hi nice Opel Gs/e!
allways add 1% two stroke oil to the fuel to protect carbs and engine and injection from corrosion when using modern dry eco fuels in old engines.
Bosch suggests this.
Thanks - I've been doing this and it runs just fine - great tip :-) !
I'll try that also...just need to add this in fuel tank? Thanks!
its a beauty……!!!!
Respect
Nice car !! 😁😁😁
Used to own a Commodore A GS/E back in the day... Absolutely love the Opel straight 6. I'm not sure if you are right on the number of Commodore A GS/E's remaining though (or were you referring to the Swiss built ones?) . Here in Norway I know of 3 or 4 that are road worthy and running. My old one still exists, but it isn't currently on the road. If it was, it would take the number of cars in Norway up to 4 or 5. Mine was in the same Cardinal red (508?) as yours. Beauty!
Lovely! Too bad it's not a manual though. I have a 4 doors Rekord C sedan, love it but still needs a lot of work :)
It's a Ooooh pel !
Piękny:)
Dziękuję bardzo
NICE
Super car
Beautiful restoration! Bravo! Was the EFI system added or was it standard when new? In many ways this looks like a 1968/9 HK series Holden Monaro, except the Monaro had a double headlight setup and came with either a 186 cu.in straight 6 with twin barrel carb. or the small block 327 cu.in small block Chevrolet V8.
As the version designation GS/E points to, the engine had been fitted with the fuel injection system originally
The "E" in the version designation means "Einspritzung" which means "Fuel Injection" in German.
sweet

chevrolet opala
this is nearly as nice as my 1977 toyota celica 20.gt . and i have a 1600 st
realy nice baby dodge charger ,
Need about Sprint 1900 version from 1968
Hi
Really wonderful !
As soon that we will be out of this pandemia , i am interested to come and see live this car ! My father had one of this in 1969 and
I did drive school on this !! Are you in UK ? I will grab a ryan air and come . Unless you want to come to Italy or we could meet mid way.
Nice car, really , a shame it does not have all the chrome and the black vinyl roof,
it's not correct that there are only between 6-8
my zelf have 2 original commodore a GS/E coupé,
It would be good to know just how many there really are. I heard these figures second hand from someone in Germany.... with your's that makes 3 - does anyone out there have any others I wonder which still have the original engine configuration running D-Jetronic?
In terms of the trims, I have the side trims, but not the wheel arch trims, so decided not to replace as I could not source them in good condition and the car looks cleaner without. I also have the trims for the vinyl roof, but these roof coverings damage cars in the long run so opted not to re-fit. If you're going to be really picky, then it's not completely original, but it is in very good condition and still on the road and I bet there aren't too many Swiss built GS/E coupes left? Anyone out there have another GS/E A series coupe?
Good to know there is someone else with the same passion ;-) !

Real European charger ....
Looks like a mini Dodge Charger. (Genral Lee)
A very slight dodge charger look in there somewhere?
+BROADTRAIN1979 More like Chevelle,it's was GMC owned back then.
look at the brazilian version of this car, the name is Chevrolet Opala, GM fitted the nose of a Nova and a Chevelle in these things
This car deserves V6 engine!GMC V6,maybe.
A V8 even better!
nice car but the Brazilian coupe Opala is more read this
this Chevrolet Opala looks like a chinese copy of american muscle cars....
where did you get the radio from?
EUROPEAN GENERAL LEE
With that red it much beloung to you wife
too much white smoke from the exhaust. Something needs to be fixed in the engine. Perhaps gasket issues, cracked head or warped cylinder may be the cause
12 or 24v?
Y. Love it the cars Please sir is for sale for mie sir is one ccars my dade 😇
très belle!!!
est-elle à vendre?
Guy
The best sports cars in Europe at the late 60s and 70s were Opel cars! What american would call muscle cars
Does it smoke sigars?
My dade is one cars idem the jours ho is 😇the cars the coops is confisqué fourriere my heritage finto
seems soft compared to Opala
Yeah I guess you could say that - but this is advanced Electronic injection in 1971 fully working ;-) It goes quite well, admittedly not as quick as a V8, but without serious mods the suspension and brakes wouldn't handle the V8 power. Anyhow, it's far to rare to do that to it ;-) ! Not too many of these left........
Simon Downs Opala is straight six too, but is 4.1 liter.
Chevrolet 250-S with 171hp and 231lb-ft.
Cant beat cubic inches gse produces almost the same power with almost half the capacity.....
they wanted a little bit economic at this era, this engine is capable to more than 1000hp :p
Not as standard though - depends how deep your pockets are ;-p
Please sir is for sale the cars mie is 3000 euro the cars yes is ok ☎️📞jean charles rabaux france
Rebuilt engine? Sounds like a diesel when he opens the hood
NICE
