@wheresPaunch either and both. But I still have to say my biggest concern with all EVs is distance availability. I have stated many times on multiple Canoo sites that since Canoo has touted its truck ad the local handyman or business truck as well as a neat little truck to take camping, I have been calling for Canoo to also develope a sled that is free wheeling with the same battery underneath as the vehicle. Turn that sled into a landscape trailer, an enclosed trailer, a pop-up camper, etc. This way, you double the mileage and/or allow for more electrical usage. I don't know about you, but I don't go down the street to go camping. And when I used to own my own landscaping company, the amount of around town travel I would do along with the amount of gas I used on mowers, trimmers, edgers, etc was a lot. All of thise gas products are now available in chargeable battery form. But charging so many batteries to coincide with mileage used by the vehicle can reach that vehicles limit. I know we need trucks on the road first. But I just think it's a missed market as well as an item that can place the Canoo above all other EV trucks to the local business.

Makes perfect sense .. A true all round familly/utility vehicle in Crew cab and bus form with adaptable seating.
And Aptera for fun driving and long distance commuting. Popping to the shops running errands and as a backup for when you have the Canoo being serviced or get a double puncture.
Now if canoo had also designed in a swappable battery pack system as per Nio. You would have a truly sustainable product able to quickly replace new improving battery tech like Blade cells and Na ion, Li S, Al S
      Tech. Which are already proving
Safer more temp stable and showing faster C rates longer life spans and ultimately looks like Al S 10 times the capacity.
All the resources are far more available, easy to source produce and recycle than Li.
The other issue is E motors that use permanent magnets..and Magnet rare earths ... There are alternatives...you dont even need to use copper windings. Permanent magnet motors are vulnerable to heat and vibration demagnetisation. Company's like Advanced Electric Machines 🇬🇧 and a German Molabo, company have already developed very efficient and powerful compact motor ranges
round easily recycled none permanent magnet motors Using Al and Steel.. better still switch them off and they are 100% safe and have 0 drag or Cogging. Technology evolves alternative e technology is mushrooming....
Best follow Prof Donald Sadoway's maxims and if you want it to succeed best make it simple, cheap and globally available.

Towing is going to be a hard issue to solve without big external range extender battery packs….Canoo has shown off a towable trailer that uses a skateboard so in theory the trailer would double your range without a load

    • @TNRVG
      @TNRVG 10 месяцев назад +1

@@wheresPaunch I've always wondered if there was other ways, like using a transmission. Tesla is "kind of doing" that with their clutched second motor on the semi. Although that is overkill in comparison to a transmission. For every day driving you dont need gears however add in a load or trailer it could be the solution? The extra battery in the bed is one too. Can Canoo tow a 4000 boat safely? Its a smaller truck with smaller wheels.

    • @clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
      @clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 9 месяцев назад +3

The solution is to fit a modern ultra efficient compact generator like the
University of Durhams free contra piston twin generator... Toyota refined it to a point where it's only 50cm long about 20wide and 18deep.. producing over 24kw.. best run off something like biofuel or Methanol using CO2 from the air and bound to hydrogen from water using the new nano coated water repelling catalysts that also reduce the temp and energy required to produce it... though you burn it your essentially recycle the Carbon dioxide via the atmospheric extraction ...your burning hydrogen mostly to produce water again.
Take a look at Edison motors DIY electric logging truck using a CAT generator charging a smaller battery pack ...running at its Stoichiometric optimum it uses half the fuel less pollution. Can be switched off and its lighter and more powerful than a conventional rig.
So use it as a rage extender charging the batteries on the longer grades or whilst accelerating the towed load ...down hill regen helps cut down wear on the brakes as they found with topsy..as its called.
The other option is to take a leaf from bycicles and trains and now trucks again and fit a powered trailer with its own power system and a load sensing hitch or kingpin third wheel.. pull and it drives break slightly and it goes into regen breaking before even having to break hard.
It can carry its own compact generator and fuel or just the plug in battery..
The power it contributes is akin to what they term a bobcat haul ie. no more than is already in the tow vehicle. See the Edison guys and also Range Truck trailers.
Way back in Nimh days Toyota did a towable generator unit for range extending the little SUV 4x4 they developed.
The advances in tech mean now you can tow an big load longer... and safer ..for the bicycle version see the Danish Carla 3 wheel power trailer that can be unhitched from any bike and led by the tow bar
On foot payload is 400lb 🤔if i remember and its got about a two meter load bed. 😎🧙‍♂️🇬🇧 Hitched up to a Dutch long john electric cargo bike you can deliver a small bars worth of kegs and bottled drinks crates across a town without breaking into a sweat going up hill and down ..

      @@robinpettit7827
Its an old idea that has found its use again a lot of detachable
Caravans ..RVs are so large that owners fit them with so called walking powered tow hitch wheels to manoeuvre them without the vehicle or re hitch them .
Keeping the tow vehicle as light as practical is important as most of the time its used as a separate vehicle... it also introduced the problem of tow vehicle break limits.
The self contained pull to push and push to brake hitch is interesting as I imagine if reverse is engaged the signals to the trailer unit also have to be reversed🤔
So it works for bicycles up to to trains. Seems like thats good enough to give it a chance..
The company i linked to als state that the trailor having its own power means that refrigerated units can be left running overnight without the noise of ICE powered compressors keeping everyone awake.
Any hybrids liquid fueled generator. Needs to be small easy format, light ultra efficient and simple to make maintain and quiet... The electric motors are the device doing the moving ... the batteries in a light vehicle would supply the energy but the generator needs to be adequate to extend the range or offset towing loads. In remote area use they need to be able to
Keep up with the motors typical running demands.
Plug in Recharging from say a stand alone flow battery based Solar/renewable charge station is going to be cheaper than most liquid fuels for the forceable future.
If you have big flatish surfaces like a roof and bonnet or trailer roof ....given printed solar panels why not cover them in cells... for commercial user's it would probably reduce costs and maintain the system when the vehicle and or towed trailer is left standing or out on the road. The Australians have made some notable breakthroughs in this field...

@@nunyabidness3075 fleet operators buy in bulk, when they decide that a portion of their fleet is too aged and maintenance costs are eating into the profits, they will be replaced. It’s relatively typical for 1/4 of a fleet to be replaced at one time. There will be extra scrutiny on EVs for replacing ICE vehicles, but it seems that so far the reliability and operational costs are proving to be attractive enough to justify the conversion of at least some fleets. Once you have convinced a large fleet operator to make the switch, you could easily be talking about a few dozen to a few thousand vehicle sales, depending on the size of the company. And competition in this area is pretty fierce, companies pay close attention to what their competitors are doing. If a big company makes the switch, it is *very* likely because the business case is strong, meaning their competitors will have to consider making the switch also in order to remain competitive. Companies also do not tend to make these purchases with emotion attached, unlike retail car buyers. The vehicles are a tool to support the business, and the less costly the supply / delivery chain is, the more potential profit there is. Also, all of the associated costs are projected over time so that it’s not only the up-front costs that are considered, which is a very short-sighted aspect of many individual (retail) car buyers. If you buy a car that cost $15k more up front, but pay $5k less in fuel per year, after just over 3 years you’ve already recovered that initial additional up-front cost and are now actually saving money. Reliability is extremely important, especially to smaller fleets. Not having a vehicle on the road costs you twice - first the actual cost of the repairs but also the loss of revenue for the time the vehicle is out of service. Not having a vehicle can result in paying overtime to other drivers, working other vehicles harder, potential loss of a contract due to unreliability of your service if you’re an independent shipper etc.
To sum it up, a couple of factors
      - little emotion in purchasing, only what works and costs less
      - competitive environment means a big player switching can have a domino effect
      - large fleet purchases require less advertising & sales effort if business case is strong, and will result in many units sold
