Yep, I always carry EDC stuff the size of a small melon around.

thought the assisted opening (flip) made it very grey around UK legaity

Obviously trust a solicitor or police officer with the law more than a YTer.
However, my understanding is that it's okay because you're still using the blade. Legally, the flipper tab is no different than a thumbstud would be.
It's when you have a separate mechanism things get hairy.
