I am a mother of 8 month old, and the teaser of 'Mrs Chatterjee v/s Norway' had me in tears! It was years ago when I read about this in newspaper - and it had struck a cord - a cinematic portrayal was much needed!

What I felt could have been better is that they could have shown both the perspectives I. E. Both the norway government's perspective and the mother's perspective and not show the in laws as villainous.... That would have made it more compelling.... A Mother of a 5 year old married to a bengali man. Just came back from the movie. Its wonderful how beautifully u describe the nitty gritties of a movie. this movie had a huge impact. I m from kolkata. In the theater there were claps and tears. These days when reviews of movies are so easily available, we look at a movie from a very critical perspective. We have forgotten to watch a movie as an art piece created for entertainment, persuasion or information... and boy..! This movie was one such piece.
Complaining about Rani's jarring accent and too loud a portrayal of character feels extremely petty in front of the plot being set. Also about the extreme kind of characterisation given to the bengali inlaws... Trust me i have had it all. I have seen mother in law sleeping on the same bed as her son and the wife sleeping somewhere else. Certain nuances are well portrayed. So it's quite subjective..!
Trust me i know this dirty custody game and how heart wrenching it is!! I am still in tears.

I mean she’s not only fighting for her kids but domestic violence to violence by in-laws, financial struggles, partner issues and so many things put to one, and one fine day someone comes and takes her kids away from her and people expect her to be calm and follow norms and penciples? Then ofcourse she’d have met her children after 18 long years! Pitty on the thinking of few segments of the society though!

Many things can be true at once.
    - In the case this movie is based on, The son had special needs and authorities had video records indicating that Sagarika was unstable and prone to violence towards her children and her husband.
    - Sagarika's husband has accused her of physically abusing him and she accused him of the same. Clearly the home environment had a lot of discord and emotional upset. Especially for a special needs child, this would have likely been very traumatizing. Even Sagarika's husband brother, said the kids seemed happier w/ the foster family, who came from an Indian background themselves.
    - When the kids were sent back to India to live w/ their uncle, they were being cared for by a 16-year-old househelp who was not trained to care for a special needs child. Now that the kids are back w/ Sagarika, there has been no verification that the son's special needs are being cared for and managed appropriately.
    - I'm a therapist myself and have a few friends who work in DCFS (American child welfare system). It actually is a huge issue that parents of color are more likely to get their kids taken away. Different cultural standards do play a large part in this.
    - Often, being taken away from your birth family is incredibly traumatic (even if they are abusive). Ideally, authorities would invest more into helping people parent effectively, safely, and responsibly, instead of just rehoming kids.
Obviously, I don't know all the nitty gritty details of this story, only the case worker knows, but there are contexts in which placing a child in foster care is necessary. I hate to say this, but, unfortunately, a lot of Indian families I've observed are especially cruel to their special needs children, because they don't meet their expectations as to how they think a child should be. I think there's a decent chance that the Norwegian authorities had just cause in this situation.

I am a bengali parent with young kids raising them outside India. My parenting is a mix of what I grew up with ( loud expression of emotions , intense love and anger, sharing everything and occasional spanking, very rare I have to add) and what I have learnt as I grow as a parent ( calm but firm actions , individuality with respect , talking things out etc.) I am not particularly proud that I have behaved differently outside to " keep up with the appearances" and to avoid being judged. And being accused of bad parenting ( when you are not abusive, bad parenting is a very very complex term), is worse than any other label you can receive. This is the one hill to die on for any parent. MCVN shows that and more. The trailer disturbed me so much, I cannot get myself to watch an entire movie. It's every parents worst nightmare.

Indian mothers freak out if their children don’t pick up their call once, this is the exact reaction a mother will have if their small kids are snatched away from her. Also the woman portrayed here is not a working independent women, she’s a housewife a victim of domestic violence in an alien country. I love how they have portrayed the character of Rani- not too smart, not too naive, but she always has her mother’s instinct on point

I am an Indian and yes it's true most Indian parents have abusive and unhealthy relationship with their kids. They are short tempered and if their child does anything against their will, they curse him and even brutally beat him up. Sometimes they just unnecessarily beat their kids up to an extent where their kids lost their dignity. They started cussing on you, giving you death threats, threat you about breaking your bones, burn your skin on arms and legs, beat you with sticks, plastic pipes, wooden bats, slippers, slaps and pull your ears and hairs until your face turns red. Kids are leaving in terror. When it comes to a girl child it's even worse. In India women is the enemy of other women. They teach girls how to hate their mother in law and first child she bears needs to be a boy. The most terrible day in a girl's life is when she hits her first period. During periods parents don't allowed her to even touch themselves. That's why in India government banned sex determination of babies.

As someone with immigrant parents raised in a Western country, I think the biggest issue is portraying child protection agencies as adversaries to parents, because it is a social service that is very necessary to get children out of abusive situations. Obviously the system is flawed and definitely overworked to the point that a lot of agents end up apathetic to the situations they witness, but it isn't inherently evil. But I guess that is just the politics of the film, that will inherently be framed from the Indian immigrant's perspective and therefore reflect their cultural ideas of parenting and the state's role in it... Still, a little more nuance would have been appreciated.

Finally someone with a RATIONAL argument. Also; most countries have a child care service.. and sometimes they HAVE to interfere-I imagine it is sometimes a VERY difficult job. I watched a film from India-try "marathon boy india" here on youtube, about an orphan boy who grew up with his adoptive father (or uncle)- he got into trouble with child care because they thought that he tried to project his own olympic ambitions onto the boy. However, I think they managed to reach an agreement. PS: my niece, a lovely woman of 50 yrs old, she herself a mother, got adopted when she was very little, her biological mother lived in Denmark, and she was an alcoholic. She grew up with my uncle + aunt, and she said that she couldn`t have been more lucky with her adoptive parents. Still, I can`t help but ask my self whether her biological mother also screamed, like Ms. Chatterjee in this movie, when they took her baby away from her. Even alcoholics/drug abusers have feelings.. Namaste from Oslo.

    • @simranwilasra2196
      @simranwilasra2196 Год назад +1

@@bjrnjensen7074 No doubt, that even parents who are struggling themselves, especially with something like addiction would be hurting to have their child taken away from them. It is a very delicate balance to strike, between protective services actually protecting a child from endangerment and essentially separating parents and children. And I can imagine that there are many instances where the agencies get it wrong as well, due to how tough of a job it probably is. Again, I think the film would have benefitted from having this nuanced discussion rather than vilifying foreign government agents and somehow adding malice to their actions?
Also, great to hear about your niece.

Childcare walon ko vamp dikha diya. They said that the CSS get money behind every kid they put in foster home. I mean, tell us how their laws are flawed. The laws weren't mentioned at all. It was just a "Maa ka pyaar" movie! The husband IRL had several domestic abuse cases against him. How is that not given ample attention? The older child was autistic and the case created on those grounds was solid as she was caught being negligent. And they were staying in Norway for several years, the lady didn't bother learning their language which isn't that big a deal but if you plan on living in a different language speaking country, with family for a long term basic toh aana chahiye na? Also, how she be so unaware of the basic rules related to children in a foreign country?? I agree most of their rules make 0 sense as Indians' love language is physical touch. But what about important rules like car seat for kids and school safety which is NILL in this country. So saying Indian values for raising kids is WRONG. Her stating that Norway thinks India is poor and people are idiots is so inappropriate as they were ABIDING THEIR LAWS
