Recreating Hong Kong Style French Toast From Taste | Reverse Engineering | Bon Appétit

- We challenged resident Bon Appétit supertaster Chris Morocco to recreate Hong Kong style french toast in the BA Test Kitchen. The catch? He'll have to identify what he's making with a blindfold over his eyes, letting each of his other senses guide the way.

Chris slowly deducting his way to remembering sliced bread exists was hilarious.
the journey to madness cut of that experience was amazing, love the cinematography for it.
Particularly after he used the word "sandwich" while talking through the pancakes.
Pre-baked batter 😂
The existential crisis of bread. 😅😅😅
"Or do I need some kind of pan...?"
-- Oui
Chris overthinking bread is hilarious
Him gently groping the piece of French toast as he analyzes the wheat used to make the bread like an AI bot
it's matcha all over again
The simplest things can be the hardest things to replicate when you don't know what they are
He overthinked pancakes, should of thought about bread types more actually
Chris thinking about how to get pancakes to be square was great
I can't believe he couldn't feel the 'bread' tho
But what happened in the “15 minutes”?
You could see the lightbulb turn on when he realizes it.
One of my favorite recreating moments 🤣
“Is it something you have to bake then cut pieces out” why yes Chris it’s called bread
Chris hating peanut butter explains so much about his personality
That he is some kind of evil, un-American Communist . . . 😛
I remember when they used to make fun of him for like stirring almond butter constantly or something
I used to like the guy...
😂
Explain!
Chris describing bread like an alien reminded me of when the main character in The Giver discovered the color red for the first time. I really enjoyed this.
Chris: "the peanut butter is ....sandwiched...........between two parts of batter"
also Chris "how did they make it like a square?"
This is literally the only BA show I watch
Yeah after they went woke and caved to the racebait outrage, I got turned off to them.
@@GoatDustyou are the problem
Same, until Chris said he doesn't like peanut butter
@@GoatDustok calm down Mary
@@robotsongsno, you
Every time I watch these, I'm constantly amazed at what Chris is able to pull off. I'm convinced anyone else in this situation wouldn't do half as well. Brad Leone would have made a ham.
this comment is iconic
A fermented ham, no less.
Brad would have also known it was bread :)
LMAO!!
LMAO111 @@vokin
Chris insisting on square pancakes "sandwiched" together is the laugh I needed today (in the nicest way!)
You know what. Chris's pancake excursion was lightly frustrating to see at first. But it was all worth it when Hanna just burst out laughing at the suggestion LOL
Baffled by bread! How can anyone eat something square with syrup on it and not immediately get that it's French toast? Chris has successfully reverse engineered some pretty complex recipes in the past. I can only guess that his excessive hatred of peanut butter muddied his thinking... 😁
It was a strange day for sure.
I think it was so soft and custardy and he's used to "fancy" bread (plus no crusts on the dish) that soft bread didn't occur to him 😂
one will know a gossip monger by the comments they make because deep down inside them is a narcissist coated with soft jelly made of camel urine.
FINALLY!!!! Please make these more often I am obsessed with this series! I think I’ve watched every video 5x each😊
I think Chris should be able to taste his and the original side-by-side (still blindfolded) for the second taste test.
They used to do that I'm pretty sure, idk when they stopped
I'd think he'd WANT to do that.
@@brittriccnope. Never happened. I watched all of them.
@@brittriccdefinitely did not. I've watched all of them.
Despite Chris's hatred of peanut butter, he is my favorite part of Bon Appetit. ❤
He lost a point on that 😂
Same
That violin background on Chris' peanut butter tirade was some of the best editing to date 😂😂😂
Chris flailing around with no idea what he's eating other than it having peanut butter in it makes the most compelling viewing. Give him more peanut butter mysteries to solve.
There is something deeply amusing about asking/being surprised by Chris being able to taste something so strongly. It's like "Yes! He's a supertaster! That's a major plot point of this show!" :) Also, I have to say that while I get the loss of points for the butterfly vs two slice technique, that still feels a little bit of an unfair cut (no pun intended) since I don't know how he might have even guessed that. Feeling the partial seam post-cooking and all seems like it'd be impossible.
I think BA should do an episode where Chris can see the dish, but can't smell or taste it!!!
Every time one of these "judges" is super particular about some element, I just think "there's no way on earth you could do even half this well"
Still miss the golden age of BA so much 😔
Fading out to Chris lamenting that peanut butter even exists…hilarious
I love this series so much!! Please make more! This was hilarious and satisfying in a way that most RUclips shows just aren't. Occasionally gmm.
This show is both so much fun and so infuriating. Chris is almost always incapable of questioning his assumptions and always ends up making the same thing the second time with one or two super minor changes in ingredients.
Should have gone the proper HK diner style - deep fried.
And with golden syrup!
Exactly! If I order HK french toast and I get this, I'm sending it back. That's not HK french toast at all. Def needs to be deep fried.
Deep fried is a MUST for HK French toast. I'm flabbergasted as to why the original chef missed such an obvious component of the dish. Probably inexperienced with HK cooking and failed to do adequate research before making their recipe.
The original HK-style French toast is deep-fried and sooo delicious!
At that point it's hard to call it breakfast lol
No harder than with all the desserts people eat for breakfast.
Chris is his own worst enemy! He said he was going to take the sugar out of the custard, then added it again in round two!
This is my favorite show you all put out thank you!
Same
I knew Chris was a unique guy but I didn’t know he was a complete monster 😢 who hates peanut butter
Me
Peanut butter is overrated so it's fine
🥴
People with tongues and active taste buds
I hated peanut butter until I realised you have to balance it with something sweet
Chris' version of HK French toast is closer to the real thing than Kristina's!! HK french toast is accompanied with golden syrup, NOT condensed milk!
I'd say both are fine, but golden syrup is definitely better if you have it.
Also a big chunk of salted butter rather than unsalted, really gives a contrast to the sweetness.
Meanwhile I'm still waiting for it to be deepfried
@@Nameless_JPN-ENG oh yeah, deep frying HK French toast is the only way to do it! Doesn’t taste the same pan fried
If it isn’t deep fried it is not Hong Kong style French toast. It is the essence of this style of French toast.
My family likes peanut butter & maple syrup on pancakes & waffles, so I bet they'd like the pb sandwiched inside. I love the idea of using jam as a topping on this.
"I don't know what words I need to use for you to give me the thing I need"
Yeah no one else knows either Chris.
The overcomplicating of everything is what brings me back to these over and over. It's hilarious and frustrating all at the same time.
Watching him analyze the dish for the first time sparked this idea in my brain:
PB&J french toast.
BAM!
I'll let y'all know how it turns out this weekend!
So, how did it turn out?
lol the violin over Chris complaining about peanut butter was great
I was literally making my peanut butter toast as he voiced his borderline unforgivable opinion
HIs thinking process is so much more complicated than it has to be :D Still amazed by his abilities tho
I swear, it was like he was discovering sweet breakfast food for the first time. Lol It's like a pancake only square. If only there was a substance that was already square. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
when I make french toast I do not put the spices in the egg mix, I sprinkle the spices on the moist bread, then dip the bread in the egg wash, this way you get a perfect amount of spice coverring the bread. And when I say spices, I just use cinnamon. And my egg wash is just egg, Half & Half, & real vanilla. And I use Nate's honey & butter as toppings.
The editing this episode is so on point.
It was so great!
I don't like peanut butter on any bread as well (it makes my mouth too dry), but when my mom put it in a Hong Kong French toast, I totally love it, and I honestly don't really know why :)
Poor Chris getting absolutely bamboozled by the milk bread. Threw him completely off in conjunction with the peanut butter
Love this series Chris is the best🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤
They gave him too many hints this episode. I want a peanut butter pancake with grape jelly syrup!!
Honestly. It really did seem like they were dropping some major hints. On the flip side, he was WAY off base on several things.
please please please make more of these!!!!!!!!!
Love this as always
More of these please!
Chris Morocco, you are my favorite part of the internet! I especially enjoy watching you recreate recipes. Keep being awesome! 😊
I would love a part 2 where Chris watches the video of the item being made.
i see chris, i click and watch, it’s as simple as that
i;ve never seen someone hate peanut butter with such passion loool
Oh this looks like something I would love to prepare for breakfast this weekend.... with the maple twist.
Great dramatic editing! Bravo.
Anybody else spend most of this episode screaming “IT’S BREAD”
Yea, but that's how I spend most weekends.
The fade out to violins playing over Chris is hilarious!
I appreciate Chris having strong opinions on flavors. His flavor opinions are valid!
I thought this series was gone! It’s my absolute favourite! Too long inbetween. 2 a month please =D
My mom has made this for us for decades! Little did we know we were so fancy, we call it Fried Peanut Butter sandwiches and ours is more like Chris's with the syrup being the polarizing portion. The OG you ate sans syrup, cut into triangles with your hands. ❤
"half of this is figuring out how to make a pancake" -- famous last words
This is so great!
Loved it
GREAT ENDING!!! I thought it was just in my head for a second lmao
Chris Morocco really is a Super Hero. Wow!
I grown up with having Hong Kong Style French Toast without peanut butter and deep fried.
The violins at the end were everything lol!
That looks nothing like Hong Kong French toast to start with lol
Hearing Chris mention how much he detests peanut butter on the Dinner SOS pod a while back gave me all the validation I needed. Was seen, heard, and felt in that moment.
I had no idea there were people who weren't allergic to peanuts who didn't like peanut butter. Mind blown.
Rare but excellent use of the word "gossamer" love you Chris 🙏🙏
One day I hope to be as passionate about something as Chris is about hating peanut butter
I love this guy’s brain… but he didn’t initially consider French toast? Lol
I liked this!
Hong Kong Style French Toast should be deep fried
Cleary the rents did not make french toast growing up, cinnamon is a no brainer. Always impressed on how close he does get though!
Is that Molly Baz behind Chris at about 6:00 or so?
That's what I was wondering... Shot years ago or is she back?
Finally someone who hates peanut butter as much as I do!!
I totally agree about peanut butter. Not my favorite thing to eat. It takes over.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but this was actually painful to watch. I had to take a break in the middle. I was in vicarious agony for Chris. But he was sooooo calm! I totally would have lost it way early on!!!
Dear Chris keep in mind the Occam razor principle ! If it square and bready it's probably bread :) Keep up the great content ! Love your videos and personality !
Chris... with you on the peanut butter! blech
I can’t watch if Chris is gonna diss peanut butter like that
Molly Baz in the background?
fun fact: peanut butter was created by a dentist so patients would be able to get their protein after dental procedures more easier.
better than the origin of Corn Flakes
George Washington Carver was not a dentist.
Love the ending 😂
Chris, I was rooting for you... *insert Tyra Banks Meme* I LOVE PB, and now I feel like our bond is broken. Still one of my faves. Also, pancakegate... LOL. Sir "A" for trying making it happen, including breaking molds! Thanks for a great episode.
I can’t believe he thought of molds before bread
I need one of them to do an ex-BA staff member's recipe (like Claire's!)
They do not have the balls
A series where Chris reacts to these videos so we can see him react to his misdirections and confusion would be so funny! 😂
I so wanted to see Chris make square French toast and then cry at the end. I love him, don’t get me wrong, but it would have been so funny!
Why don't you go to Whole Foods anymore? :/ it was a fun part of the video!
He was so close in the beginning. Eggy, square, crisp edges. Wild that it wasn't a dead giveaway for french toast lol
Lol @ the sad violin music along with his criticisms on peanut butter at the end.
The overthinking of bread is hilarious.
the worlds smallest violin at the end was chefs kiss
id like to see how an episode would go where chris swaps the taste for sight!
Chris, have you had Filipino kare kare? 🤔 It's an absolutely wonderful savory beef/tripe stew dish and one of its main flavor bases is... peanut butter.
I wish there was a “pancake” counter in the upper corner. 😂
Not being able to discern a lack of maple syrup bothers me, and forces me to question the super taster (unless he thought artificial syrup? tho its not what he used in presentation)
the comment section is so funny! it's really crazy that chris can easily guess some of the most random dishes but yet has trouble with french toast??
It’s funny looking at him struggle to figure out the concept of bread
When will Chris start shopping again?
