- From the TV series Superboy. John Haymes Newton played Superboy/Clark Kent in the first season. Here he makes his debut as Superboy to save Lana Lang who has been taken hostage by a gang who stole a top secret laser weapon.
I know it's a tv show, but the flying effects are an improvement over what we see in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace.

Newton didn't know how he should have had his hans in front of him. It looks like he's trying to fend something away from himself at times. Christopher Reeve was a pilot and he understood how to keep his hands out in front of himself, when to keep his lead hand flat or when to use it like an aileron on a airplane wing or ball it up into a fist when Superman flies faster.
Loved this show when I was a kid. I watched this all the time.

I was either in middle-school or just starting high school when this came out and I remember thinking to myself why is he calling himself Superboy? He's in College and is clearly an adult. As cheesy as it looks, there is a charm to it.

Its shocking this show made it to a second season. Got much better after the first season but how this made it is a miracle

Adventures of superboy season 1 episode 5 counting down nowhere isn't pilot episode when the superboy saves Lana Lang.
They should show this in theaters. Top notch.

I'm being entirely serious when I say that I don't envy anyone who has to write film or TV scripts that involve superbeings. The very immensity of the hero's or heroine's powers virtually forces the writer into using all kinds of logically indefensible devices that can threaten the entertainment value of the piece, by throwing the viewer out of the world of the story by their inconsistency with the basic laws of physics. For example, in the 1978 "Superman" film, in the first rescue scene, Superman's arms would have caused Lois to break every bone in her body when she hit them after falling from the helicopter. He then grabs the falling helicopter by its runner and lifts it back up to the helipad, even though it's painfully obvious that no amount of strength would keep anything level if it were held in that way. Here, Superboy can see Lana being pulled into the helicopter, and yet it takes him forever to get to her. These corner-cuttings are inevitable; an accurate portrayal of how superpowers would actually work would leave us with five-minute TV shows, and twenty-minute movies.

yea but that was a throw-away scene. there was no apparent reason he should stop by to there before continuing on to save Lana. This clip doesn't show it but there wasn't any kind of conflict of saving someone/something else , as well as Lana. Eg, saving the space shuttle, vs saving Lana.

I figured Superboy from a safe distanced would have fired his heat ray vision at the helicopter's engine causing it to explode! That would have prevented the two criminals from escaping!!!

This was a 1988 1/2 hr. Syndicated TV show - which meant a lower budget overall. The show got better through the years, bigger budget, and even won some awards. I loved it then as a child, and I still love it now.

I only just noticed it, but whats with his hands when he is flying. At one point it seems like he is shielding his face, and one arm crooks in under another..
It kinda looked like he was checking for updates on Lana's exact location on Find My on his iPhone, but then I remembered... three was no iPhone at the time.

If you're watching your DVD set for the first time in a long time, the episode is called Countdown to Nowhere. It was the 5th episode.
Even though technically it was the pilot episode. It was aired out of order in contrast with the rest of the season

They showed this episode on tubi and it was changed with more footage. They left out the beginning when they were giving a photo shoot with superboy. Lana was remembering the first time she met superboy. It was when it was aired on tv. In the 90s. Ha ha

Looks like the filmed the school scene a Valencia Community College, rescued the girl at KFC but landed with her at the Polynesian at Disney. Super-boy flys away with the Disney's Grand Floridian in the back ground.
I think that's the chemistry building at UCF at the start. I was in a student film there about 20 years ago and the cop who was providing security for our filming said he also worked security for this show back in the day. He talked about watching them hoist the actor up through the center of the building with a crane.
