I upgraded last year and it motivated me to start collecting again. Got me into Arrow, Criterion, Blue Underground and all the other boutique labels. I've collected over 100 4k films/shows and a bunch more blurays. Even with arrow and criterion blurays, they have 4k or 2k restorations, and all the new players upscale to 4k so those discs still look really good. Switching to 4k was definately worth it.

I couldn’t agree more 👍 I’ve always been a movie collector and home theatre enthusiast so I decided to upgrade my entire 1080p home theatre in April 2020 to have a 4K TV, 4K blu ray player and 4K Dolby Atmos Receiver which I hooked up x8 speakers in a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos arrangement. The best upgrade I’ve ever done in my opinion 😎. I’m also an Amazon Prime Video subscriber and have definitely noticed Amazon have made so many more great movies available on 4K since April as when I first got my 4K TV there wasn’t many 4K movies to watch via Prime. On New Years Eve I watched 1917 on 4K via Prime Video 👍
#1 on my wish list is Brotherhood of the Wolf, that one’s hard to find even on regular Blu-Ray. It’s such a great movie tho, it really deserves a top quality 4K release imho.
Well this time around for the most part it’s the best that these movies are going to look at least for the size so it’s probably going to be the last generation
@@GringoXalapeno I agree that current and past movies will never look better than now in 4K with HDR. Physical film resolution will never really push beyond 4K (even if some IMAX and 70mm film might a little bit) and the dynamic range we have now also exceeds films ability. And movies that were shot digitally and released now also don't exceed the abilitys of 4K UHDs. There are two areas where I'm not sure though: The color depth and resolution and compression. 12 bit colors are a thing and all 4K UHDs that I know use 4:2:0 chroma sampling, so basically we have 2K color resolution. And compression really messes up some scenes in 4K UHDs. But because I doubt that there will be much more new physical media formats I guess 4K UHD will actually be the final high quality physical format. In conclusion: Well worth collecting.

I was happy with 1080p until I got an XBox OneX, and an Atmos sound system - I figured it was time to go all the way with 4K. In my opinion, the most noticeable, and enjoyable benefit of 4K is the extended color gamut, looks awesome! Get ready, because the best time to score a great deal is in the spring, when the manufacturers roll out their new lineups, and they need to close out remaining inventory. Back in May ‘20, I got a leftover ‘019 Hisense H9F 55” for $450.00, it normally went for $699.00.
Being a huge Sony fan, I'd agree with some of the previous statement. However, your Samsung purchase was a good decision; despite dolby vision. Definitely way better than a Vizio.
@@PrimalGecko Dolby vision is not the be all and end all. I have an LG C9 65 and a Samsung mu8000 75 (which is a 2017 model) and I’ve done blind tests with friends and family and everyone including myself thinks DV is too over done on most content. Some things look absolutely beautiful in DV but the Samsung with HDR10 and HDR10+ (yes I have some HDR10+ content) can stand almost toe to toe in most comparisons with DV. So don’t knock someone’s choice of Samsung.
@@PrimalGecko Dolby Vision is marketing hype. People are drinking the Dolby Vision Kool-Aid pretty hard. I’ve seen the Dolby Vision xml files, and I’m telling you, it’s a mistake to choose one TV over another because it doesn’t have Dolby Vision. Don’t drink the Kool-Aid, people.
Took the plunge recently - coming from an ancient 1080p lg plasma (which is still going strong in my bedroom) to a mindblowing sony a8h oled. I watch everything from low budget horror stuff to blockbuster movies, and I’m big on amassing a physical media collection. Thanks for carrying the torch holmes! Love the content.

@@1165mac I agree! Someone else said it before...the leap from Blu Ray to 4K is nowhere near as mesmerizing as the leap from DVD to Blu Ray. Some of us have just been so spoiled that they probably weren’t even around in the 80’s when all we had were grainy VHS cassettes. That’s why I can’t thumb my nose up at good 1080p discs and never will as long as it’s done right. I especially won’t do it just because something “better” has come along in the form of 4K. What happens when they come out with 8K? Will you then thumb your nose up at 4K given how great looking those discs can look? It will never be enough.
True man! The only Blu Rays I have sold or given away are my absolutely favorite movies, Gladiator, Braveheart, Jaws, etc that I have upgraded to 4K on. Got several tv shows Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Star Trek, etc I doubt they will ever release on 4K so will be keeping those. Other movies I watch less frequently I will never upgrade to 4K on unless they are dirt cheap on sale.
@@lanceheaps581 I agree 1000%. I mean DVDs are still selling because everyone hasn’t made the jump to Blu Ray. Think of all the people that have made the jump to Blu Ray and haven’t made the jump to 4K. Physical media is physical media, whether it’s DVD, Blu Ray, or 4K. When we say long live physical media surely we don’t just mean 4K. I know I don’t. Blu Ray has its place just as much as 4K does, and DVD for those that still choose to purchase those discs. @@kotobukiya70 yeah there are still things I have on DVD I will probably only upgrade if I absolutely have to AKA they quit working. 2 movies off the top of my head falling into that category are 8 Mile and Big Daddy. I have a new 55” TCL 6 Series Roku on back order. It should be here by the end of Jan and will replace a 49” TCL 4 Series Roku. Then I’ll have to work on saving for new and better surround/atmos speakers.
I'm still sporting 1080p 80" TV and a 1080p projector. Both are still running strong and still looks great. Maybe someday when my display breaks down or I can buy a 90" plus 4K TV at a reasonable price, maybe only then I'll consider buying it.

Jeff thanks for the great video as always. In a couple a days. I'll be buying a 70 inch Visio with Dolby Vision. I'll be moving my Samsung 50 inch 4k into the bedroom. I hope everybody has a Happy New Year!
I upgraded my 50 inch Panasonic Plasma for a 55 inch Panasonic OLED back in the summer. Just bought a Panasonic 4K player as well so im looking forward to firing that up.
I have a $700 and a $2500 65 inch 4k tvs and I can say no matter your budget you'll see a HUGE upgrade with 4k discs even if you pay $100 for a cheap 4k player or just stream everything. It's a great time to invest in your home theater. And if you can afford a little extra you can get a good soundbar system for a few hundred bucks which I'd highly recommend if you don't have the money or space for a true atmos surround sound system
Great and excellent advice. I'm finally in the market for an 85". The hell with it. I'm going big! We're spending ALOT of time watching movies. Might as well enjoy the best picture. Just waiting for the best deal since everyone scarfed up the low prices during black friday!😠 I need a 4k player too I guess. Hoping you make a video comparing the best real 4k budget players vs 4k upgrade only players.
4K is definitely the way to go. That said, I'm dumbfounded that standard DVDs still outsell even blu-rays! And, of course, sales of physical media have decline again this year - about 15% lower the first two quarters of 2020 than in 2019. I seriously wonder if physical media will even be around in three years. If it is, it will be a niche market - and expensive!
@@FastEddie86 Terminator 2, Waterworld (compared to the ARROW blu ray), Gremlins, Pan's Labrinth( again, ARROW BR)... there's others I don't remember off the top of my head. ALL DUE TO LAZY TRANSFERS!!!

Early adopter here too same year! Speaking of available content. I still have a few dvds since there's no other option for those titles. I usually can find a Blu-ray import (Mel gibson Hamlet for example.) But like Richard grieco If Looks Could Kill still only vhs or dvd . I wish there was a way to get some of these in Blu-ray, 4k or even a digital version.
@@JeffRauseo my biggest issue is american films going Blu-ray in other countries but not here. But thankfully I also adopted into the region free player community as well.
Many of my friends have converted to 4K TV during the beginning of Covid. It’s also important to upgrade to Dolby Atmos soundbars and speakers, that’s also important to get the movie theater experience.
I agree. I've had a 4K player and TV for 5 years and found it extremely hard getting my hands on good 4K releases the first 3-4 years. The shift has now finally taken place and prices has dropped significantly in the last year. Thanks to you it's now a lot easier to find out if the upgrades from Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray are worth buying. When in doubt I always check if you've done a review before buying - and let you decide if I get them or not. The only sad part is the drop in recent years sales of physical formats. Streaming services are killing the discs, at least here in Norway. The result: not one store in my town focuses on 4K bluray so all purchases has to be done online. Since chances of movies being released on 8K discs are slim to non, I'm focusing on future proofing my collection of classics. Thanks for the great work!
Keep in mind that just because a model has UHD in the label it won't necessarily deliver the UHD experience. I have a cheaper TCL 4 series 4k UHD set for the bedroom. I got it last year, my first 4k UHD set and I was underwhelmed. This Black Friday I got a pricier Sony 4k UHD x900h set for my TV room and it's a night and day difference in PQ. You get what you pay for.
Bought my 4k tv when the Oppo UDP-203 came out, it was a no brainer with the new player. The savings from not going to theatre just aren't going to happen, I am a double dipper who loves to go to the theatre and then watch it in my home :) Hope they survive.
The only thing that is keeping me from upgrading my old TV is that I love to watch and own a lot of 3D movies (I know 3D isn't popular, but I'm one of the ones who likes it). I wish they would include 3D on 4K TV's, I mean is it that hard to include.
It will be hard. You may be able to find some 4K TV with 3D on eBay. otherwise you will probably instead get a projector with 4K and 3D they are easier to find. last I checked
Yes I do have one it’s the older budget 4K it still but I am a special Olympian How’s Win major fan of your old movies one of them is the seven hour version Of Das boat that one deserves 4K it’s still the best version!
Like the posters above had said. Basically it's a clearance time before new models are released. This can result in limited options as Black Friday can clear out quite a bit of inventory.
Nice video Jeff :) I hope 2021 gets an huge boost with more 4K titles. i`m so 110% into physical media. Easier to convince younger generation to upgrade then my parents:)
Way to preach! Now is the time to 4k if you haven't already. Because of the pandemic, you can get great deals. I'm a Sony guy. If you're a movie enthusiast, go 950 series; GREAT picture. If you're a gamer, go 900h. If you want best bang for buck, go TCL or Hisense; they are SURPRISINGLY good. Happy New Year all.
Im going to upgrade to a 4k tv shortly and purchase a few of my fave movies in 4k, however it won't stop me going to the cinema to see a new movie. i miss that experience of going out to the cinema to see a movie,
I got my first 4k tv in 2014. It was a Seiki 55 inch. No smart features. 8 or 9 hundred dollars brand new at Sears lol! I never got to test it's picture because I had nothing with a 4k source. Now it's just used in the spare room for video games. It's got older hdmi ports and both the 4k firestick and 4k roku require the newer hdmi for 4k. I do have a blu ray player that upscales to 4k and some movies look great on it.
Finally did it, Jeff! Switched from my 10 year-old HD Samsung 46-in - which I loved, by the way! I jumped to a 4K Samsung TU8000 series 'crystal series.' My only complaint is in the B&W content - TV and physical media classics; my old TV was faithful to desaturated grayscale, but my new 4K TV treat this questionably. I see elements of a pale yellow (instead of white) pool into areas that are surrounded with dark or black zones - even if I reduce all the color setting! I'd welcome any recommendations on how to tweak my settings.
Screen tint is an issue that comes from bad panel uniformity. This is a quality control issue from the factory and the only way to eliminate it is to exchange for a tv with a cleaner panel.
@@brucecarter6205 Oh, man. Don't see it in other areas, just the occasional Black & White content, and even then, not everywhere; only in bright spots surrounded by darker contrasting spots.
@@RenePeraza , it will always be there, but obviously more noticeable on bright white backgrounds. You just have to decide whether or not you can live with it. I had a screen tint issue on an LG C8 OLED and once I saw it that was it. My OCD took over and I couldn’t stop looking for it and seeing the after effects. It messes with color accuracy on all content.
Got a TCL 6 series in 2018, as it was considered the best TV under a grand. I love the Roku interface but it has a narrow viewing angle, so I feel compelled to sit directly in front of it in order to always get the best picture (as opposed to a few feet left or right on the sectional couch). I'll enjoy it a few more years and hopefully upgrade again to an OLED. Otherwise it's a daily joy to watch content on. However, I think having a legit sound system is even more impactful on the experience. So, get some good speakers too!
Upgrading to 4k, you MUST aim for an OLED screen... I took the plunge 2 years ago with a 55" Sony Bravia 4k OLED. Was expensive but well worth the price for the viewing experience. Watching 'Alien' in the dark, make sure you have a change of underwear on standby....
Man I bought a Sony Bravia 49XH9505 so it’s not a big screen but for my bedroom it’s perfect (and also I got it at 800€ instead of 1300) and I’m blown away by the quality picture, the HDR is a great addition. I’m re experiencing all my movies and games. Oh and the first thing I’ve done is buying Alien in 4K as a huge fan. Can’t wait to see it
Just got a 75" sony x90h and paired with with a sony 800m2 player, and for sound dont laugh but i picked up the z906 as a starter surround system. We just watched the lord of the rings in 4k. Wow.

4K is great for projectors and 4K Blu Ray but not essential for TV under 65 inch screen unless your old TV needs replacing. 4K TV is the same price you paid a few years ago for HD so you will probably have no choice but to buy a 4K TV when your HD eventually needs replacement.

Well one of my main reasons to upgrade to 4K is for me Is my plan on getting a PlayStation five within the next year to two years and also I’m a big physical media collector I get physical media for a lot of my games and just about all of my movies and I also collect physical Anime.
I keep my TV's for like 10 years. I'm waiting for the micro-LED or mini-LED, whatever it's called. As I want OLED, but they just cost way too much, and the size of the TV's are currently too large for my usage anyways. And looks like the mini-LED will give you OLED performance, without the negatives, and it should be cheaper as well.
I have a PS5 and a 4K HDTV, and I can attest to the fact that if you're thinking of buying either that or an XBoxX, you really need to have a 4k TV. The difference is astounding even when playing PS4 Discs. As for the streaming, unfortunately, there are those like myself who do not have an internet-capable of 4k Streaming, and it doesn't look like we'll be getting it any time soon. I depend on my 4K Library.
Everyone needs a roof, 1500 calories a day, air and a pair of pants ! 😂 What I WANT is 100 inches of 8K with an infinite contrast ratio ! Happy New Year everyone !
I just got my 4K SONY TV with a PS5 this year :P + just started getting a few 4K Blu-ray's to :) I wish normal TV channels were in 4K tho(in the UK) but I can't see that ever happening but hopefully I am wrong :D Excellent video as always ;)
4k is necessary on 55". It comes down to ~80ppi which is comparable to 1080p on a 27" pc monitor (actually not that great). Bigger than 55" tv's really need 5k or 8k in my opinion but it's always about the money and availability. Also movies only just moving to 4k and problematic so with a lot of upscales from 2k digital.
I'm still running a plasma 1080P 3d TV and I love it. I don't have the space for two sets so need to make the jump at some point but reluctantly as I still think the 3d is so good. I think you make a good case to do it now but I think I'm going to acquire 4k blu rays for now in anticipation of the move when I get fed up with 3d or it dies on me.
I've been telling people to buy a decent sound bar first if they already have a decent hd tv. The upgrade in sound imo makes for a better home theatre experience .
I haven't had cables in 5 years.. How much 4K content is being pushed out by Comcast these days? 4K live TV available yet besides maybe one football game a week?
Halfway through last year got a 55" LG OLED after having a Samsung 46F6400 for the last six years AND OH MAN IS IT AWESOME (and im even one of those ppl that liked the 3D at home, but 4K HDR is definitely better! Id be down for 4K HDR 3D tho 🤷🏻♂️)! Now all I need is to finish my speaker setup (I've got it up to 3.1 so far) and im set!
I’ve invested in 4K and followed your channel. I cannot find a RAN uhd 4K only a Blu Ray from studio canal. I cannot determine if this disk was remastered and put on blu ray. What is the best version of this classic film available for a US region disc.
I ordered my region free 4k blu ray player. Looking at getting a TCL 43 inch 4k tv with soundbar soon. I know TCL isn't a big name brand tv like Sony, Samsung, & LG, but the QLEDs / OLEDs are a bit too expensive for me. As for size,my space won't allow for anything larger than a 43 inch tv.
OLED if you have a dark room. LED if you watch in a room with light. OLED isn't as bright yet so you're going to have a hard time seeing it in say a living room during the day.
Be careful going to OLED... if you have a bright room or a lot of ambient light, stay with the LED panel as OLED needs a dark room to see it correctly. OLED still (and most likely will always) gets washed out in rooms with light.
I've been thinking about getting another 4K TV. The one I have doesn't have HDR. It also has horizontal lines at the bottom that move. It can probably be fixed but I want something nicer to get the most out of the 4K movies I have. I'm probably going to go with a little bit smaller screen. I probably won't notice much since I might be in awe because of the picture.
I bought my first 4k tv in 2013. I kicked myself because all the video codecs weren't supported by that tv which I had spent thousands of dollars for. I started buying 4k discs when they were released but just recently got a 4k Blu Ray player. Now I'm living the high life with my investments 😂. All I need now is to upgrade my home theater

@@bened22 yeah who knows but it would be cool if we could get 600 gb thumb drives to get less compressed copies that’s equivalent to the theatrical distribution
This is where they seperate the men from the boys, on the other hand, with 70" 4k sets at Walmart for under five hundred bucks what are you waiting for? Best purchase you will ever make, trust me.
I'm so glad I upgraded this year to 4K. I got a 85" Samsung Q80T. It was so worth it.
You should have got a Sony or Vizio... Samsung does not do Dolby Vision and should be avoided.
SuperBizalz I have a low budget 4k tv and don't see any difference a lg 65 un8100 to normal tv
I love 4K as much as the next guy but I ain’t ever getting rid of my 1080p Blu Ray discs....EVER!!! No reason why I can’t have Blu Ray and 4K both on my shelves!
I still find myself impressed with the quality of well-mastered 1080 discs from my old Mitsubishi projector on a 96" inch screen.
The more physical media that sells the better, regardless of the format.
@@kotobukiya70 yeah there are still things I have on DVD I will probably only upgrade if I absolutely have to AKA they quit working. 2 movies off the top of my head falling into that category are 8 Mile and Big Daddy. Neither IMO are movies you watch for stunning visuals or special effects. So no need to go to Blu Ray on either. I know 8 Mile is on Blu Ray not sure about Big Daddy.
I posted this to friends and family who I have tried to explain 4k to. Thank you for explaining it much better than I. Love 4k!!
I wanted to say thank you for all the content. Im new to this channel and I have received a ton of new information that I did not have before. It's made me really double down on my physical media collecting and working on a better home set up. Thank you again and keep up the great content

Happy New Year man! Great video topic.
I upgraded back in May. TCL 6 SERIES ...65" wish I'd gone up in size but next, when I have the money ...75-85 and OLED !!! OR Projector...one day!
You still get more for your money as opposed to digital purchases which you typically get with blu rays anyway
Agree 4k is the best ever content , to go back to 1080p difficult 😆 am replacing my blu-rays to 4k ones💪

For sure! Thousands of movies will never make it past DVD, and thousands more will never go past Bluray. So the formats stay relevant.

I pulled the trigger, 43 inch LG for £350. Love it! Perfect size for my small room.
I bought the same Sony Bravia as your after seeing your review!!
Great TV. Good choice
Welcome to the club had my Sony X900H since early July it is great.
Thanks for the information on 4k live action sports.
4K TVs have pretty great upscaling from 1080p as well
I bought a 4K tv about 3 years ago, it’s an LG and has some issues (with black, mostly). Trying to get the most out of it before replacing it though!
Bought my 4k tv when the Oppo UDP-203 came out, it was a no brainer with the new player. The savings from not going to theatre just aren't going to happen, I am a double dipper who loves to go to the theatre and then watch it in my home :) Hope they survive.
Great video Jeff! Very informative.

@@Andersljungberg thanks for the info. Didn't know it is easier to find 4k 3d projector. I'll look into that

I’ve heard the same. The Super Bowl deals are always good
ur basicly buying last years models at that point
2 times to upgrade black Friday and the week before the superbowl.
Like the posters above had said. Basically it's a clearance time before new models are released. This can result in limited options as Black Friday can clear out quite a bit of inventory.
Black Friday is the best time. February is when they release the new models
I'm assuming the live 4k sports will either be @ 30 frames per second and/or very low bitrate. Wouldn't get too excited about it.
On top of that my 1080p Blu Ray movies look great up sampled to my 4k TV. Plus you can't beat HDR/DolbyVision.

Happy new year to you and yours from The U.K.
I feel like 2020 was the tipping point for 4k.

Definitely think the PS5 will be a big boost to 4k as the PS3 was to Blu Ray.
Happy New Year 2021
I keep my TV's for like 10 years.
The micro LED is basically the next gen of OLED and the mini LED is the next gen of QLED, in a nutshell.

Cool channel and videos, subbed 👍😎
What is the difference 4K / OLED / QLED - how do we decide between all these formats?
OLED if you have a dark room. LED if you watch in a room with light. OLED isn't as bright yet so you're going to have a hard time seeing it in say a living room during the day.
Wait a year or two if you can. Lots of promising new tech coming very soon.😉
I have a Sony x900f led and it's great!!
Someday I'll get the Sony A8H for OLED!!
Be careful going to OLED... if you have a bright room or a lot of ambient light, stay with the LED panel as OLED needs a dark room to see it correctly. OLED still (and most likely will always) gets washed out in rooms with light.
