This is really interesting. I've used your tools dozens of times and it is a wonderful service you provide to the community. Now I know when I look at it on the screen the total width should be roughly that of a letter-size sheet. Good to know!
I love the nib nook, I have compared many times when deciding which nib size to order. It’s so helpful to be able to look up a nib I have at home and compare it to one I am buying too. Fantastic tool. I very much appreciate the work you put in.
Stay strong, you people. As a long-time subscriber and two-time(and here's hoping, many more)satisfied customer, I really hope my business with you has helped you somehow as a company. Stay safe, I will do what I can in the following weeks to place an order.
I would love to see more of these! The nib nook is a fantastic resource and it is definitely helpful seeing you write the sample. Also, the hair is amazing.
I appreciate the time you put in to ensuring we have as much information we need to make good decisions about buying the best pens for our uses. Thank you, Brian.
I have referred back to the nib nook many times, it's an awesome resource and it is reassuring to see that you make efforts to keep new samples consistent with samples from years ago. It's frequently hard to discern the differences between and EF, F, and FM. My one request is that you have somebody go back and re-scan all of the samples at a higher resolution. As it is, it seems like the difference in line thickness is often less than a single pixel from your scanner.
Definitely think this would be useful for new products - nib nook helps a lot but sometimes you want to know more about the qualitative differences between nib sizes so having a quick walkthrough would be great
You should consider making an ASMR with different pens writing! I find that sound so satisfying. I thought I would prefer fine/extra fine since that's what I prefer in ballpoint pens, but one of my favorite pens is the Jinhao X750 with the medium nib.
Awesome informative video. In particular I now better understand the purpose of the pen strokes to indicate properties of the nib. Always learning something from your website and videos. Many thanks.
even if some nibs aren't meant to flex, there seems to be a threshold between bouncing and slightly opening up the flow, and flex that starts to look like really flexing out. the century 3776 fine that I have has that very soft control between making it close to Japanese UEF and F without terrifyingly flexes out, and using Iroshizuku may alter the sensitivity for being thinner ink than the one black ink that came with the pen. Those differences caused massive discrepancies between nib size reviews, but especially around Japanese users/reviewers that tries it new vs using it daily(which is yet to be found because there hasn't been much who really like the 3776 for so long and dailies it)
Thank you for this video. When a company is confident enough to demystify their processes, I take it as a sign that they really know their stuff. As a scientist, nothing irks me more than irreproducibility. I can no longer say that the Goulet Pen Company is trying to hide their methods!
Japanese extra fines propably need to be that fine to accomodate the convoluted kanji The "Taito" kokuji has an insane 84 strokes in a single character
Can you please request better packing between shipping box and box containing the pen? My Homo Sapiens box was slightly crushed in one corner; the pen was not damaged. Also, I noticed that the Goulet book markers are not included in the shipping box anymore? I enjoyed the cardboard markers to keep my place in my current box.
I would watch future nib nook videos. When you talked about the ink being looser and the characteristic of Japanese nibs from fine to medium, it was very helpful. Also, can you do some videos on nibs/pens/inks used for art please?
i would love to see a nib nook for any strange or unique nibs that come out, for example if something like the omniflex or falcon nibs were to come out in the future, it would be nice to see how they perform in a nib nook.
I think it would be useful to add some common pens like a Pilot G2 as a point of reference for first time fountain pen users. I know I would have found it helpful in choosing nib size for my first pen.
@Brian: Would you see any difference in overall line thickness if you wrote placing the sheet on a hard surface rather than the more spongy surface of multiple sheets in a pad?
Frank Strahan You can't be. As long as the pad isn't messed up or Brian doesn't change his writing pressure a ton it'll be close enough. The perfect test would be a single sheet of a certain paper on the most common writing surface written by a machine using the exact same ink. The thing is these are fountain pens and each one is different enough that it makes that level of control pointless.
@@LimitlessFrank It's not going to be- youre going to get differences between pen to pen of the same brand and nib size. Your pen is also going to adapt itself to your writing style in terms of how the pen will wear which further changes the quality with time.
These would be great for new and upcoming pens. At least we know what the lines will look on these pens. It would help with the decision-making process, especially if you're ambivalent about getting it or not.
I appreciate that and agree 100%. Newer pens I could try to do, that’s what I was attempting to do here...but “new” has to be really broadly interpreted right now as I’m just not able to crank out videos at the pace I used to right now. Upcoming...wow I’d love to show that, but it’s super duper rare I get to see one of each nib size of a pen that’s yet-to-be-released. -Brian
Thanks Brian! Do you then sell the pens you’ve used for the nib nook after cleaning? Can they be sold ‘as new’? This wouldn’t bother me as I would know the pen had been tested but some people can be a bit funny!
Hi Brian! Great video as always! I have more of a technical question regarding retractable fountain pens. Do you know why most of them have the clip near the nib instead of in the back like regular clip pens? It seems so smart to make a fountain pen retractable but it seems like holding the pen could be uncomfortable which then kind of defeats the purpose of it being retractable?
Hi Brian, you're a really sweet guy. I like a nib I've got on my grandad's Parker 51, and I don't know that I've ever tried a 'broad', but it seems very pleasantly the broader side of 'medium'. Deffo my favourite of my four fountain pens. Kind of interested in the Curidas, though. Will look it up.
Good evening sir I have taken the Curidas fountain pen and I have completed the fixation of clip successfully. But after fixation of ink cartridge and the barrel of the pen is not getting into the mode of retraction. Please let me know how to get the same. Thanks again and regards
Hopefully theyll respond but you just have to watch a lot of videos read up and maybe get a cheap varsity pen or preppy and go from there but if you do a variety on their nib nook online youll see a bigger difference
Not a fan of shaking the ink bottle. I was looking to purchase some glass or stainless steel beads that could do the job of mixing with some swirling. Anyone else had any success with this?
Bill Koslosky, MD I would be afraid of a glass bottle breaking with the beads. I don’t like shaking bottles as it gets ink on the cap and I hate that. What I do is use a pipette to pulse the ink a couple of times. I have also used syringes (3-5cc) with a blunt needle but the plunger action is more difficult than the simple squeeze action of the pipette and you don’t want to be too aggressive. This method also agitates the particulates in shimmering inks well with little fuss or mess. An eye dropper works as well.
Thanks for taking us to work with you. lol I chose the urban green with a medium nib and love it. It gets used every single day. Now that I know the clip doesn't bother me I want a VP too.🤓🌻
Actually I went with the amazon basic. It's about on par with the VP, the lammy Safari and similar but is literally half the price. The down side is finding a converter that works.
The nib nook samples are really helpful for most i am sure.

I love how you kept a paper record of all of the nib nooks! So much work!
Yay for Brian's hair! I love the longer hair!
It makes him look even cuter.
@@steventrosiek2623 I'm wondering if this won't be a trend after the pandemic.

The nib nook is one of my favorite resources from you guys. It helped me choose the omniflex nib for my duragraph, which has been my favorite so far

Its actually really helpful for those who dont know if they want a medium, broad, stub nib etc
Thanks for the writing samples. It's great to be able to compare the different pens & nibs!
I enjoyed this. Please, do more of the sort.
Very helpful Brian. Thank you! BLESSINGS
This was fun to watch. Loved seeing the variation between medium and fine in real-time

That was cool to see. The nib nook has been incredibly helpful for me to make purchases. Thanks for doing them!

Don't worry about the quality of your handwriting, Brian. You can write the cursive F, that puts you far above me in terms of penmanship.
I really want to buy that shirt
