I went to a Japanese high school in Sapporo for a year as an exchange student. The winter was cold, so girls often wore their gym shorts under their skirts, especially on the way home from school. One day as I was getting ready to go home, I realized I had left my shorts in my locker, located on the back wall of my home room. When I got there, the door was closed and my classmates were busy with an after school lesson. I knocked on the door and said to the teacher
      「すみません、教室入ってもいいですか?パンツを忘れました。」
I thought I was telling them that I forgot my shorts in the classroom, but the word I used was “pantsu”, which actually means underwear.
The look on the boys’ faces 😅
      The poor teacher was like
      「えっ、パンツ入ってないの??」
      “You’re not wearing underwear??”
      「うん、体育が終わったらあつかったから、ここに起きました。」
“No, I was hot after gym class, so I left it in here.”
Those boys asked me every day for a month afterwards if I was wearing my “pantsu”😂🤦‍♀️

    Lol, I'm the date-fell-asleep-on-the-toilet girl!
It was even more embarassing, let me explain: We had been going out for a few weeks at that point. He asked me if I wanted to hang out at his place as a friend from the US was in town. So she came over and we had a great conversation. He excused himself to the bathroom and we started chatting. Turns out that they met on Tinder back in the US - we met on Tinder in Japan :D Luckily both of us were pretty open and cool with it, so we just continued talking. After a few drinks we realized that AN HOUR had gone by. In the end I had to bang against the door cause it was impossible to wake him up from just calling his name...

I was in Hokkaido. It was in a small town. Many of the stores were about to open. I thought one store was already open so I tried to walk into the store but ended up smacking super hard into the door which was clear glass. It made a really big sound and rattled the whole door. Two old ladies popped their head out and they were super sweet and opened their shop a few minutes early because it seemed like I was really eager to get in. The worst part is that I hit the glass so hard that I made a smear mark on it. One of the old ladies had to go and clean it. We definitely bought something by from them that day. I felt so bad.😂🤧

It was the last bus, and my phone died, so I went to a koban and started to cry because I was lost and didn’t know how to get back to my host family. I was talking with a japanese friend back when I started learning Japanese, and he asked me what I wanted to do during summer vacation. Confidently I told him: "I want to go to the bitch" (ビッチに行きたい) instead of "I want to go to the beach" (ビーチに行きたい). He was so confused for a second, "You want to go WHERE?!" Me, again: "bitch!" *Mometary thinking pause, followed by geniune relief* "Ah, to the BEACH!"

The emergency alarm used to happen constantly at work, because our only customer bathroom was also an accessible bathroom requiring an alarm. There was no button, but a string hanging from the ceiling near the toilet and tourists would constantly pull it. I'm not sure if it's normal in other countries to make toilet flushing mechanisms with a hanging red nylon string, but ours flush with a press button on top of the toilet tank. I spent a lot of time standing in front of the door asking if everything was alright. Only once it was an "emergency". They'd ran out of toilet paper.

On my first trip to Japan i had looked up buying a day ticket for tokyo on the JR system, given how basic my Japanese was I asked at the desk for this ticket, the vendor looked at me with puzzlement but couldnt quite understand me and sold me this ticket which was it turned out very expensive (but cheap in the UK) he wrote something on the back and told me to show it at my hotel. hen i arrived at my hotel (all the staff spoke good english as i may have posted before) they said the vendor didnt know why i would want a ticket that covered all the lines for most of the tokyo system. So my ticket was not what i thought i was getting though did do the job as i had over spent. the next day i found the correct ticket was a small fraction of the cost.
I also learned about SUICA cards, and that Tokyo station is not the best stop to find places to sight see. After my first week I had found easier and cheaper ways to do things, there are just things that nobody things to tell you like road rules for pedestrians.

The bidet went off then suddenly air came out. I tried at least 10 minutes..I heard a lot of people waiting in line outside since it was the only toilet and unisex. Finally I gave up to ask a friend how it works and opened the door to see at least 5 salary men waiting outside. 😭 i later found out the flush was just a lever behind the toilet...

I went to a hotel with my Aunt and Uncle and when the clerk at the front asked for identification I thought they meant my driver's license. It was then I learned that I needed to bring my passport with me, or I could get arrested! Thankfully no police were around at the time, but I was super embarrassed for not knowing something that important.

When I was 15, I went to Japan as part of an exchange program. Before going, I had been practicing my Japanese a lot and my father tried to make up little sayings that sounded like the words. They never made sense.
So myself and the other students are in the mayor's house, being treated to lunch but I couldn't eat a lot of it because I'm allergic to fish. After he found out, he'd asked the cooks to make me something safe to eat. It was brought out, and as I went to eat it, instead of いただきます、I said "Eat the ducky mess". All because of my father's silly little phrases!

In the end I actually feel bad about it because he was a really nice guy and was super apologetic and it seemed he felt really bad about it. I worry that he still feels bad about it because I understand it was a mistake and am completely fine with it but I don’t think he realises that. I wish I had expressed more about how it was fine. I went (one floor) down and to the right. It was darker in the floor already so I looked at each door for a toilet sign. Then some students (1 male and some females I think) came behind me and asked what I was doing. I said looking for the toilet. And then he told me this is the womens section. 🫠😳😵

Well, I was on the train to Narita Airport with a friend and luggage and there were these "hooks" you can attach your luggage to so that it won't move around and disturb people. You set up a numeric code and then hook your luggage and go back to your seat. The time comes to get off the train and everybody gets their luggage, I go get mine and the code won't work. Basically, I had set up a code on a different hook than the one I had attached my luggage to if I recall correctly, so it wouldn't open because of course who knows what the code to the other hook was.
We didn't know what to do... after like 5 min some guy in uniform comes inside the train to do a check-up and finds 2 silly girls panicking and fiddling with their hands on a hook... so he looks at us probably thinking "Tsk.. foreigners" and opened it for us :P

i felt embarrassed when i rode the bus on my own for the first time, though. in germany, you buy a ticket before you get on the bus, so when i entered, i was very worried bc there was no ticket machine, and the bus driver had insisted i enter through the doors in the back. two old ladies ended up hurriedly telling me to sit, bc the bus driver wouldn't start driving until i sat, and explained it to me... also, in germany, the locks turn in a different direction. when you lock the door, you turn the lock toward the outside, but in japan it's the other way around. so, i ran into and rattled my fair share of doors before remembering...

    Thanks for your hard work

(In the U.K.), I went for lunch with some colleagues and ordered edemame. One of our colleagues had never eaten them before so put the whole thing in his mouth. We told him that he can’t eat the whole thing but he didn’t want to make a scene so just said it would be fine and kept chewing. 10 minutes later he was still chewing! Eventually he spat it out 🤣

I was exploring Tochigi-ken and I rode a bus one time. When we reached the bus stop, I am the first one to stand in queue to pay via the slot machine before hopping off the bus. As I was about to pay, I absent-mindedly dropped my 500 yen coin into the ticket slot .The driver was shocked and was explaining to me in Japanese (I did not understand) while the others were waiting in the queue. Then the driver made me get off the bus and wait outside to give way to the waiting passengers. After everyone got off, he explained to me again in simple Japanese that 500 yen coins should be broken down into smaller coins before inserting to the coin slot (max is 100 yen). I said ok and bowed deeply out of embarrassment hahahahha

I went to a Zojoji temple near Tokyo Tower and saw that there were people praying at the building, you know where you throw some money into the box (not sure what it's called), and I wanted to try it too. But I didnt know that you had to go through a bunch of steps in order to actually pray (including claps and bows), so I prayed after just putting my hands together and bowing and when I finished, everyone was looking at me as if I was stupid..........

I've pulled the emergency cord thing on a toilet too. It was my first time using a disabled toilet (it's the only toilet there at that place) and didn't notice the flush handle for some reason, and thought the pull cord must be like the old toilet pull chain. xD

a friend, my cousin, and i were exploring akihabara and we went into this one store that had a bunch of figures on the first floor. The floor guide said that there were more figures and manga on the 7th floor, so while my friend stayed to check out first and second floors, me and my cousin made the climb up to the 7th on these steep ass stairs.
My cousin walks in first and as i was walking in she says to me, "no, nope, get out" In the few moments i had been inside i noticed that the store was just a bunch of shelves with dvd cases.
Apparently my cousin had walked in and looked to the side and got a load of anime boob on shelves right next to her. We had accidentally walked into the floor with adult content lmao
We went back down to find my friend, explained what happened and laughed it off. Im 17 and my cousin 20, but we both look quite a bit younger than we are, it must have looked so weird to the shop keepers to see two def underage girls walk into an H shop XD
side note: also we didn't realize there was an elevator until we had reached the 1st floor again, my legs suffered in akihabara lmao

In the lobby of a capsule hotel, a gentleman told me to take off my shoes and put them in the cubby. I understood him, but wanted to let him pass first, because he was there first. So I said, 「分かりました。じゃあ、どうぞ。」 I couldn't think how to say, "You go first". He, thinking I misunderstood, repeated to take off my shoes and put them in the cubby. Once again, I said, 「分かったよ。しかし、どうぞ。」 He must be thinking, "If you really understand, why are you telling me どうぞ?"
So he pointed at my shoes and then at the cubby. I said, 「ワッカタ、ドウゾ」in an agitated tone. My friend, who doesn't speak japanese, said "I think he wants you to take off your shoes, man." I said "I know but... sigh, fine."
I put my shoes in the cubby. Starting to feel very embarrassed, I did a short bow and a sheepish「す、すみませんでした」before proceeding inside.
From now on, if I can't think how to say "You first" or similar, I'll just throw out お先に失礼します and charge forward x__x

When I was playing Beatmania in the now-closed SEGA arcade in Akihabara, the game crashed and shut down itself, so I went to the staff and ask for them to turn the game back on. They offered to refund me and asked how much was the credit. It was 120¥ but I instead said 百十二 instead… The staff was confused, but then realised, oh you mean 百二十! and then my face turned red… and then i keep on playing to hide my embarrassment…

Another thing on the same day, I was paying for my beer at a bar, then just I turn to leave I didn’t notice there was this big step up to the bar so I fall down right in a group of suit clad middle aged business men who started laughing like crazy, but helped me up. I must have looked super drunk lol

The first time I ever was in Japan, I went with a Japanese friend who spoke good English to an onsen.
It was my first time, and I wasn’t very good with the hot water, so I ended up getting out earlier than everyone else. I sat for a while in the locker room in just a small towel to cool off by myself.
This sweet old lady came up and tried her best to talk to me by saying “どこからですか?/Where are you from?” and I got nervous and for some STUPID reason, I thought she said something about the bath / onsen being warm??
So I answered: ”はい!暑すぎました! /yes, it was too hot!” In a very loud clear voice. She just awkwardly smiled and walked away.
Of course, me being shy about onsen at the time, it didn’t help that this entire exchange was done with this sweet old lady being fully nude.
Yeah.. I still cringe to this day about my mistake 🤣

It was so funny coz all of them pretending that we are invisible and we can't contain our laugh so we just laugh silently, endlessly.
Also, we got yelled by obasan for crossing the road when the traffic light is still red (for pedestrian). we are not at fault when the traffic light is green, all the trucks are not stopping. No matter what color is the traffic light, all the trucks, cars were not stop (we are at Uno Port) So when the obasan already left, we just cross the road

Guess I can take the cake for an embarrassing toilet story....
After a big firework display in Osaka I went to a conbini to go to toilet, with a big line before and behind me. Next in line was a mother with a toddler, who was almost at his limit, but so was I. In the toilet, which had all those fancy buttons, I couldn't find the one to flush. After searching frantically for 3 minutes I felt bad for the little boy next in line, and just run out apologizing. At least it wasn't a number 2.
