When I saw he put a woman as number 10 I stopped and came to see the comments to find who was out. I read your comment that Vizzuti is out and sorry, that’s enough for me to know this video doesn’t deserve my attention. Nowadays is all about “inclusion”, not merits. Thanks for your comment!
I greatly appreciate your perspective on each musician listed. I thought for sure Matthias Höfs would make the list, but this goes to show how many great Trumpet players there are making incalculable contributions to the music world.
Agree with previous comment, but why wynton and hakan so low? Also think Maurice Murphy’s orchestral contribution in popular culture shouldn’t be overlooked - everybody’s heard him play without realising
It blows me away that my first Best trumpet player back in the 60's was Raphael Mendez and he ranked so high on your list. I also believe Andre is the best ever. His impeccable articulation, tone quality and phrasing are almost too much to handle. He's so clean it almost seems like he lacks expression at times. Still the best ever.
You left out Chris Gekker for sure, Tom Hooten, Caleb Hudson, Peter Bond, Marie Speziale; and Phil Snedecor ….. you know know this is your pal SGT Stroup btw
I think there are just too many world-class musicians on this planet to call some the "best." Many who toil in the studios are never widely known, but are, of necessity, magically great players (and singers, and arrangers/composers, etc.). One studio trumpet player I greatly admire is Malcolm McNab.
Impressive discussion of the greats. I tend to gravitate to sounds/ artists however that with my skill set I can sound like. Never will I come close to these masters. I do think that I can play some Rick Braun or Chris Botti in the future.
Yeah Phil and Bud are legends. It’s hard to compare these guys sometimes since phil and bud are orchestral principals and everyone else are primarily soloists. Different applications
Herseth should get higher billing than Phil Smith. Keep in mind that Herseth paved the way for so many others, including PSmith, by establishing the trumpet in the CSO over a 53 yr period as THE dominant orchestral instrument. How many OTHER people have been PRINCIPAL of such a world-class symphony for THAT long ?????
And yeah hakan is very good technically speaking. For me I just don’t like a lot of the music he performs (not a big fan of contemporary classical). That’s personal preference though
@@MattBrockman no he doesn’t only play contemporary classical. You have to check out his album art of trumpet( there are contemporary pieces in it but not all of them are) or even other albums
ADD: Esteban Batallan -- Principal of CSO, is IMPECCABLE stylistically and deserves a spot. William Vacchiano -- former Principal of NYSO w/ TREMENDOUS lineage of students. Caleb Hudson -- Powerhouse of a performer w/precision and mastery. Matthias Hofs -- HIghly accomplished Baroque performer, dominating that space. DROP: Winton Marsalis -- is 100% Jazz now and is no longer playing any classical - give him Jazz. Rafael Mendez -- more of a popular performer rather than classical -- others fit better. Tine Thing Helseth -- Caleb Hudson and Matthais Hofs are both better. Timofei Dokshitzer -- Vacchiano was better & his teaching formed a strong base of players in USA. Another point.... WAY TOO MUCH VIBRATO !!! It grossly DIMINISHES his technical proficiency. Arturian sounds cheap due to the overbearing vibrato. It is MUCH more difficult to play a straight, even tone than to produce an unending, wavering vibrato.... embarrassing. A few more points about Vacchiano.... He was in direct contact with Vincent Bach at Bach's Mt Vernon plant, being involved with the development/refinements of the Bach Strad (37 bell) which became THE best professional grade trumpet -- not only for its time, but the "standard" thereafter and continuing to this day. In fact, Yamaha and others have directly copied the Strad. Even though Conn has struggled at times with Bach production, Bach revolutionized the trumpet itself (with Vacchiano being "plugged into" the refinements Bach made -- who utilized Vacchiano's critique and ongoing input). Another KEY reality too is how instrumental Bach/Vacchiano were with the development of Trumpet, Trombone, AND Tuba mouthpieces -- which not only revolutionized the MP industry, but has served as the "standard" for over 75 years. EVERYONE uses the Bach standard when referencing MPs, because it is so UNIVERSALLY established. Vacchiano worked closely with Bach in this arena as well. So, Vacchiano's legacy stretches MUCH farther than MOST people are willing to give him credit. One last comment about Herseth.... Not only did he put Mahler 5 on the map, but he established the trumpet as having its own rightful place, above all else, in the orchestra. In fact, he "led the orchestra from the back of the stage" without Solti even knowing it.
You had me until you said TD had too much vibrato. His vibrato on the Arutunian is what makes it much better than all the rest who tend to play it without much feeling, soul, expression, and vibrato. For the Arutunian, my #1 is Dokshizer followed by Phil Smith.

Great list Matt. The one I would have added is Allen Vizzutti
He’s a beast!
Nah he is technically very good but he isn’t as musical as håkan for example

Agreed, Matthias is an excellent player and musician!
Ralph Martiri was great. I played in his big band in Chicago during the 1950's
Nakariakov is an absolute beast!
Agree with previous comment, but why wynton and hakan so low? Also think Maurice Murphy’s orchestral contribution in popular culture shouldn’t be overlooked - everybody’s heard him play without realising
Nice list
Thanks for watching🙂
William Vacchiano and Armando Ghitalla should merit some consideration too, although anybody's top ten list is going to be highly subjective.
Yeah 2 great players. It is hard to only pick 10 people when there are so many greate

Yeah there’s definitely too many good players, not a bad problem though!

Two great players!
I do think that rolph shmedvig should be here and that Philip smith and bud hurseth should be higher, Phil smith being at least 2nd.

Chris Martin
Yeah he’s amazing!
Jeroen berwaerts belongs in this list in my opinion, a very underrated player
And håkan should be first in the list
I’ll have to check him out!

Hakan is good, but doesn't get 1st billing.
Louis Armstrong will always be my favorite.
Yea Phil smith should be 1st no question
It's a good argument!
