  • Winter is coming (eventually), and in this episode, we start to prepare for its icy arrival by digging a cellar for storing our food. We discuss the benefits of storing perishables in a cellar and explore different options for food preservation.
    But another temporal storm hits, this one worse than the last. Luckily, we find exactly what we need in order to set our spawn point directly inside our home. Which is great, because this storm was a doozy!

      I think if I wasn't already playing when Tyron announced that feature, I probably wouldn't know about it either! There are tons of little features that get mentioned in the release notes and then never mentioned again. I'm sure there are features I still don't know about, too!

    I have a feeling the tiny bit of inefficiency in your cellar has to do with the door allowing some sky light from the ladder directly through to the vessels. I've had the best luck in my cellars when I placed the entrance around a corner from the ladder or stairs.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +6

      Probably. I think I could get another 0.03 or so out of it, but that's just splitting hairs at that point! I didn't want to have to wait to the end of the hall every time I went down there so I made that compromise. In also pretty sure we'll have more than enough food to see us through the winter. We have like 2x the crops I had in my old single-player world, and I didn't starve even with 12-day months.

      @@Kurazarrh Yeah, just expanding on your cellar info a bit in case anyone reading the comments is interested.

      I don't think the crude door provides as much insulation as the proper wooden door, but more generally any kind of door gives a small penalty because it's not a stone/soil/ceramic block. So in theory you can get a tiny boost to preservation by blocking the doorway with dirt or something instead of a door, but the benefit is small enough that personally I don't feel it's worth the inconvenience.

    • @NipapornP
      @NipapornP Год назад

      AFAIK, the temperature has much more impact than that tiny bit of light. Some players even bring ice cubes to their cellars to cool them down! (sometimes mods are involved to keep the ice longer)
      Anyway, sealed crocks will keep food longer edible than you mostly need. In temperate climate, I always get through the winter w/o any sealed food. Just the vessels in a cellar alone extend food spoilage so much, that I never had to starve, when combined with chicken/eggs, pig farming or hunting. Later on with bread and pies baking, it's even more easier!

    20:31 did you notice that your health goes down a lot then jumps back and heals you. any idea what that is or is it a bug? I thought it might be a part of the temporal storm fucking with you a bit to make it seem scarier

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +3

      You know, I never noticed that before! I'm guessing that's just a bug. Hopefully it's not actually dropping an extra 2pts right away, or I might be getting cheated out of my last 2 hit points!

    • @TheLewylew
      @TheLewylew 2 года назад +2

      @@Kurazarrh well that's what I was thinking, noticed it and was like that was a big hit, then looked again and thought you might have cut it slightly and healed up but nothing went down on your hot bar. so it's either a bug or intended to startle you. would be cool if it's an actual bait and switch but it's most likely just a visual bug at best and death blow at worst

    anyone able to do the math on how many crocks you'd need to just stay in your house for the winter?

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  5 месяцев назад +1

      That depends a lot on what you're putting into those crocks. If you're making porridge, you'll need twice as many crocks than if you make red meat stew when cabbage and fruit. But with the aforementioned red meat stew, I usually need about 2.5 meals per day. So once you know how long winter lasts in your area, you can get a general idea from there. For me, to last all winter, probably requires at least 2 dozen crocks.

  • @JiriKrakora
    @JiriKrakora 2 года назад +2

    I don't get it. I have "Other" with 0.26x speed in my cellar, but the very same sealed meal is going to be fresh only for 1.3 year. It's kind of weird.

    • @Kurazarrh
      @Kurazarrh  2 года назад +3

      That sounds about right. There's a bit of variability in spoil times depending on the ingredients, but it ranges from 1.2 - 1.6 years or so depending on how perfect the cellar is. Meals in a crock also get the same bonus being in a flat vessel as they do on a shelf, and you can see that the default soul time (on a shelf that's NOT in a cellar) will be around 40 days, so what you're seeing is normal! :)

  • @annak804

    Why not cover the floor of the cellar in loose stone. And yes the drifters are dumb the little dirt building is a temporal storm murder shelter. Before the stone throwing add on people made murder pits.
