Got A question for anyone who can answer; Was about to buy Spirulina and bee pollen to feed my shrimp but notice it contains copper, will this cause problems?
why on earth would you break down this successful super colony? forget about replacing the soil. just put nano fish in there and theyll provide your plants all the nutrients they need. i think its a huge mistake to take that tank apart.
I couldn't agree more. Maybe it was for the soil no longer doing things with the water chemistry, but a successful and stable colony really shouldn't be messed with. However, I do trust his judgement😄
@Robbie None of you know much about soil substrates. After 2ish years it does turn out of nutrients and not only that, it starts leeching a lot ammonia after that amount of time. This is why it is replaced after this amount of time.
I think replacing the soil isn't necessary all that often. Especially since you don't have very demanding plants in the soil. I'd let it go on until you see deficiencies in the rooted plants. Save you a lot of work. Plus it looks very nice.
How'd you suggest doing a tank reset? 🤔 Mine is about 8mo old but how'd you go about moving your current stock/shrimp/fish ect so you can get the tank redone safely? If you only have one tank Can't wait to see what shrimp you're able to breed and the unique types!
If they are of the neocaridina species, they will lose their color after several generations. If they are caridines, the hybrids will have mixed parental colors.
Substrates, whether they come inert or not (inert = no nutrients/minerals in the substrate) are all designed to absorb and hold in nutrients/minerals. Once your eco is spent/near spent, you can always use root tabs to reintroduce things to your substrate. The root tabs are gel cap pills filled with ferts, you shove them in the substrate and the gel cap dissolves, releasing the fertilizer into the surrounding substrate and replenishing some of its nutrient potential. I would never say you could get the eco back to original capacity, BUT Im sure you could get close. It helps to know what your individual plants need aswell, because there wouldnt be much of a point putting in Iron or the like, if your particular plants dont use it.
This is more or less what I’ve always wanted personally I’d much rather have a very big aquarium with a crap ton of tiny little animals rather than a very big aquarium with three or four big fish swimming around
Same small fish and creatures roaming like a city for them instead of a tank or cage , bigger fish I don’t think are that happy when it’s just 2-5 big fish in a big tank
one big fish, i mean, like having Godzilla as a neighbor for thousands of absolutely tiny critters, so small they aren't worth the time of the giant. best of both.
Omg that’s exactly what I thought the second I started the video. I told my husband holy cow this guy looks so high and I don’t do that so for me to notice is must be pretty obvious.
No joke, I absolutely love the algae in the tanks! I encourage algae growth in my tanks and just try to keep it off the front so I can see in, but I think it makes it a more natural environment for the inhabitants of the tanks when there’s algae
It's a big mess in 2 of my tanks(both with filters) the no filter tank has none at all. Prefer the clean look, but algae can flow nicely if it's not on or covering the plants
I'd be super pissed if I bought specific color shrimp only to find out that the seller has been keeping them in the same tank as other color varities. That's a sure fire way to end up shrimp that produce offspring with dull, bad, or different coloration.
@@fudgenuggett I thought he described those as 'assorted shrimp', implying that people know that they are buying assorted colours because they are labeled as such. I wouldn't touch it rob, that tank looks amazing....dirt doesn't get replaced every 2 years in nature man...add 100 rummy nose or something like Iike that instead of rescape
But nature is an open ecosystem whereas the aquarium is a closed ecosystem. Sure you put food in there and waste goes into the soil but does that exactly mimic the outside world? Then again maybe soil companies just want you to replace the soil every 2 years so they sell more, the same way lightbulb coimpanies dont make bulbs that last forever

Sounds like a vague assumption... Those soils have the ability to release as well as uptake nutrients from the water column and animal waste. Unless they mechanicly degrade over time one should not need to replace it. But I'm sure the marketing department from the manufacturer feel very differently on the subject.
Porkchop Sandwiches They’ll provide good nutrition for the the plants for far longer, but at about 2 years they will stop dropping the PH under 7. Caridina shrimp won’t breed if the the PH is too high. The buffering life span will vary based on how often you have to do water changes and the carbonates in the water you are using. You should test your waters PH to know for yourself when the soil needs to be replaced.
