So in Bangladesh we laugh at people who attempt to eat fish curry with a knife and fork…. It’s much safer to dig in with your hands… and pull out the bones… more fun too! But I loved this video and glad you enjoyed our food 😊
Something that saucy wouldn’t be natural for a westerner to eat with their hands. No need to “laugh” at people. They just don’t want to have messy hands, I imagine.
So there are Bengalis in India too. To make the Indian counterpart of this dish, halve the amount of chilli and add a dash of sugar, we like our food a little sweet on the other side of the border :)
Looks amazing! Really admire the authenticity of the dishes you’re making. As a Bengali this dish looks perfect! Thank you for highlighting the dish :)
I'm really glad you survived using the mustard oil, I would not recommend that doing that again with any other oil that says for external use only, specially if it's heated.
That looks so good! I'm always looking for a good fish recipe. Hubby does electronics work for a commercial fishing fleet and I get more fish than I know what to do with for free. I'm not sure if there is a difference, but mustard oil used for cooking is cold pressed mustard oil.
You can use boneless salmon or almost every kind of boneless fish fillet even deshelled shrimps/prawns in this as you were struggling with bones. And for a bit play, throw a handful of cilantro leaves while making the paste. ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Jamie , I made this tonight and it was absolutely delicious. I used tinned tomatoes and tuna steaks. Keep up the amazing videos, I tried the cooking the world challenge and failed when Covid hit. I can carry on now but positively cannot be bothered so I’ll eagerly await each of your updates. 😆 Keep up the videos ! X
Hi Jamie, once you reach Germany, you gotta try sour lentils. Or try it in general. It's a brown lentil stew, sometimes with pork belly and wiener sausage, and with a type of noodle called Spätzle, from the south-west of Germany.
After years of south Asian and Mexican cooking I find that I don't bother to deseed chilies. I just use less if I want it milder. If you don't want any heat at all use a green (or red) pepper. You didn't take the stems off of the chilies....hope it worked out (It's something I've never done myself, I usually use the stems of dry or fresh chilies in my soup stocks)
Thank you for making and trying our food. I loved the video. I hope you try some of our beef recipes someday too. I feel you will enjoy it. Love watching your videos.
Glad you didn’t try Hilsa. Delicious ❤️❤️ but it’s bones ….with some flesh. Nightmare to eat . No thank you. Rohu (rui) is very authentic too. I love mustard fish and was worried using a blender to make this mustard paste instead of a flat mortar pestle like I was taught to. Will make it. I will use salmon here in the PNW
Yeah. I actually gasped when I saw him use his hands with the turmeric. I love this spice, but, oh, boy, does it stain! Didn’t know about the sun. Thanks for that info!
@@cydkriletich6538 I had an Airbnb guest spill a huge bag of turmeric on the guest room carpet and leave it there overnight. It’s not a spice to be trifled with!! (Two weeks of direct sunlight did the trick, thankfully.)
Nice and I'm glad you didn't dig in with your fingers 😂 I'm gonna have to learn how to debone fish. I saw some serious videos on how to filet many types of fish. Where to next?
I'm a Bangladeshi 40+ single man from Atlanta & when I cook I usually leave my kitchen door open to get the air out & literally my next door female neighbour comes to talk to me & it's been happening since my undergraduate years. .. later many of my co-workers wives & children visited me after their husband took some leftover from my home ( once one of my co-worker visited me during hurricane katrina or Ivan I can't remember & I gave him almost 3 pounds of cooked beef which I thought got stale for power outage during Katrina/Ivan but he just rushed to take the whole dekchi with him though I told him that it wouldn't be good idea to eat 'em but couple of days later he came back with the empty dekchi or the pot & he was asking when it'll be next time I'll cook some because his whole family like in-laws & everyone craved those beef so much) . I've been almost 20 places (mostly in the sun belt region) in last 20 years & it happened everywhere not to mention I got numerous compliments. ... one thing I'm good at is cooking fish. .. I could tell you you did heckk of a job & it looks delicious. Congrats.
It's illegal for human consumption in many places because of the high levels of erucic acid it contains, the same toxic acid that was bred out of rapeseeds to produce the modern canola crop. Eating it once or twice is unlikely to cause harm, but animal studies have shown serious cardiovascular problems with long term consumption.
I couldn't get mustard oil as it's banned in Canada. One of my Indian dishes calls for it and it was very disappointing to not have all the right Ingredients. It is a health risk according to Canada all I remember thinking is seriously you sell us McDonald's but this oil is too much for our hearts. I say let me live and sat well.
I looked it up because of the vid, and Australia sells a version called yandilla that doesn't have the erucic acid that triggers the ban in the US. Canada might allow that version as well.
We literally have the same bike tattoo in the same location. Only difference is mine has 13 in the wheels for friday 13th. What are the odds lol I got mine in 2011
Looks good, no chaos which is disappointing to me and others out there no doubt. But thoughts, since we have a food allergy in the house to chilis no hot stuff in the dish for us, but regular curry spice that is not hot would work. Also, the fish steaks looked like sword fish; that could be substituted for the recipe's fish, maybe less bones. Otherwise, a good-looking hearty fish stew, I guess. Brave to try the mustard oil, which I guess is to be rubbed in to relieve congestion, in the chest, of a bad cold, so keep it around, in the medicine cabinet, if you, or anyone else in your house, gets Covid again! ;D
Without Hilsa fish!!! Dude, if you can get a hilsa from the Padma river, you would know the definition of flavour. It must be from Padma river, not less than 1 kg size, try it, it’s the tastiest fish in the world.

Jamie is one of my fave youtubers! But I'm a lil confused. Bengali refers to Bengal India right? Bangladeshi people please comment! I'm so confused! American here and appreciate that India and Bangladesh are distinct countries
Bengali refers to the language and the people who speak the language (and folks who live in the region where it is spoken) What is now the West Bengal (State in India) and Bangladesh (the country) used to be a single province pre-Independence. The British split it (twice, once in the 1920s and once in 1947), and so Bangladesh began it's existence as East Pakistan. The people of Bangladesh won their independence in the War of Liberation in the 70s. It's a complex bit of history, and the links between West Bengal and Bangladesh run deep. The dialects of Bangla spoken sound different, and the food is a little different too!
@@antsywoman Hoo boy, that sounds like it needs a whole semester! Any recommended books? The "for external use only" may just mean that it is not "food grade" oil. Which means chemicals from any extraction process could be left in the oil.

If I remember correctly, there are some very minor health risks associated with regular consumption of mustard seed oil.
It's illegal for human consumption in many places because of the high levels of erucic acid it contains, the same toxic acid that was bred out of rapeseeds to produce the modern canola crop.
